A slim carrying case is the better fit if you mainly want to keep your Nintendo Switch 2 and a few games together in an everyday bag. Choose a travel case when you want a sturdier described shell, a handle or more organized storage for accessories. Those labels are not standardized protection ratings: compare the specific case’s construction, fit and storage, and don’t assume either one has passed a particular drop test.

The practical choice comes down to what you carry, how tightly you pack, and whether you need a fitted case or room for additional gear. For example, PowerA’s Slim Case is a zippered carrying case with room for up to 10 game cards; Nintendo’s listings for the PowerA Protection Case and RDS Industries Game Traveler Deluxe Travel Case describe different travel-oriented features. Neither example should be treated as a proven winner in a drop test.

PowerA Protection Case for Nintendo Switch 2 Travel with a handle and organized small-item storage Sturdy outer shell; nine game cards and two microSD Express cards Nov 2026
RDS Industries Game Traveler Deluxe Travel Case Travel when you want a hard-shell design Hard shell and recessed insert; listed game-card capacity is inconsistent Nov 2026
Belkin Travel Bag for Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying more gear than a fitted case is intended to organize A larger travel bag, distinct from Belkin’s fitted Travel Case Nov 2026

These are documented design and storage differences, not comparative impact-test results. The PowerA Slim Case’s manufacturer describes it as a low-profile, lined, molded carrying case and says it is specifically designed and tested for compatibility with Switch 2; that compatibility statement is not a drop-survival claim. What is the difference between a slim case and a travel case?

A slim case prioritizes a compact way to carry the console; a travel case may add a sturdier described shell, a handle or more compartments. The category names alone do not establish how well any case protects a console in an impact.

Slim means carrying case, not an on-console shell

The cited PowerA Slim Case is a zippered carrying case: the console goes inside it for storage and transit. It is not a protective shell that remains attached to the console during play. Its published exterior dimensions are 12.2 × 5.91 × 1.57 inches, and PowerA lists capacity for up to 10 game cards. Those figures can help you judge bag space and game storage, but do not establish how much force the case can withstand.

PowerA describes the design as low-profile, lined and molded. Those details tell you something about the construction and intended carrying format, but they are not a measured impact rating. The 12.2 × 5.91 × 1.57-inch figures are exterior dimensions, so they are useful for checking whether the case can fit in a backpack pocket or luggage space. They are not the console’s dimensions or a guarantee that a particular compartment in your bag will accommodate it.

The Slim Case’s capacity of up to 10 game cards is a concrete advantage if you want several physical games close at hand without carrying a larger bag. It does not follow that there is room for a charger, dock or other bulky accessory. Check for an explicit compartment description before expecting those items to fit.

Travel features depend on the model

Nintendo describes its PowerA Protection Case as having a sturdy outer shell, a handle, a pocket for small accessories, nine game-card slots and space for two microSD Express cards. RDS Industries describes its Game Traveler Deluxe Travel Case as hard-shell with a recessed insert. These descriptions point to different design choices, but neither is a measured comparison of protection. Belkin distinguishes a fitted Travel Case from its larger Travel Bag, which is intended to organize more gear.

For a travel case, separate the features that affect carrying convenience from claims about protection. A handle can make it easier to lift or carry the case on its own. A pocket or card slots can keep small items together. A hard shell or sturdy outer shell describes the case’s construction. None of those features, without a published test, establishes how the case fares in a specific fall.

Also distinguish a fitted carrying case from a bag designed for a broader loadout. Belkin’s Travel Case is described as fitted, while the Travel Bag is the larger option for organizing more gear. If you want to carry more than the console and a few small items, a larger bag may be the more relevant category—but its specific compartments and dimensions still need to match what you plan to pack.

Is a slim case enough for Switch 2?

It can be a practical choice if the job is to keep the console and a few games together in an everyday bag, without adding as much bulk as a larger bag. If the case will be packed among other luggage or you need a handle or organized accessory storage, compare travel-case designs instead.

Think about what the case must do on your typical trip. A low-profile molded case may suit a bag that already has room for your other gear; a travel design with a shell and handle may be more convenient when the case itself is your grab-and-go container. The words “slim,” “protection” and “travel” are product names or descriptions, not a common rating system. No comparative drop-survival statistic is established for the examples here, so don’t treat “sturdy” or “hard-shell” as proof of performance in a particular fall.

Use the slim option as a carrying solution when you mostly need organization and a little separation between the console and the other items in your everyday bag. It is especially straightforward if you carry the console, several games and little else. The Slim Case’s listed capacity of up to 10 game cards may be more than enough for that use, though the number of slots is a storage specification rather than a measure of protection.

Consider a travel-oriented design if you want to pick up the case by its handle, keep small accessories together, or prefer the described shell construction for your travel routine. Those are practical reasons to choose a travel case, not proof that every travel case is tougher than every slim case. Construction and layout differ by model, so look at the exact case rather than relying on the category.

If you pack a console in a crowded backpack or luggage, think about the contents and arrangement of that bag as well as the case. A slim case may be easier to fit around other items; a larger travel case may offer a more self-contained way to carry the console and selected accessories. Neither description guarantees that the case will prevent damage under a particular load or impact. Choose for the kind of packing and storage you actually expect.

How do I check whether a case fits Switch 2?

Start with the case maker’s stated compatibility, then check that the space around the console accounts for its attached controls and protrusions. Do not judge fit from the console’s body thickness alone.

  1. Confirm explicit Switch 2 compatibility. Look for a product listing that names Nintendo Switch 2, rather than assuming a case for the original Switch will fit.
  2. Compare the internal fit area with the console’s full shape. Nintendo specifies Switch 2 at approximately 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide and 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached; maximum thickness at the protruding controls is 1.2 inches. Nintendo Switch 2 technical specifications.
  3. Check clearance around controls. Make sure the listing’s compatibility and fit description covers the sticks and triggers, not merely the central console body.
  4. Resolve generation claims case by case. Nintendo says Switch 2 is larger than the original Switch, but its listings for the PowerA Protection Case and RDS Deluxe Travel Case explicitly claim compatibility with multiple Switch generations. An old case is not automatically compatible; a multi-generation claim on a particular new case is not proof that every older case fits.

As Nintendo puts it in its console-comparison guidance, “If you own both, you’ll notice the Nintendo Switch 2 console is larger in size.” That size difference makes an explicit model-specific fit claim more useful than a case’s general label.

The distinction between 0.55 inches and 1.2 inches matters: Nintendo’s first figure is the console’s stated thickness with Joy-Con 2 attached, while the second accounts for the maximum thickness at protruding controls. A case that seems deep enough based only on the central body measurement may still have inadequate room around the sticks or triggers. Prefer a model-specific compatibility claim and a fit description that accounts for the whole console shape.

“Will my old Switch case fit Switch 2?” is not a question that can be answered by the old case’s name alone. Nintendo says Switch 2 is larger than the original Switch, which is reason not to assume a previous-generation case will fit. At the same time, certain current listings—specifically the Nintendo-listed PowerA Protection Case and RDS Deluxe Travel Case—claim compatibility with multiple Switch generations. Treat those as model-specific claims, not a general rule that all old or multi-generation cases fit.

If you are checking a case in person, do not force the console into a tight compartment or assume a snug fit is acceptable. Compare the actual console shape with the case’s named compatibility and fit details. The available product specifications do not give a universal allowance for clearance, so rely on the manufacturer’s stated fit rather than inventing a clearance number.

How many games and accessories can a Switch 2 case hold?

Capacity varies by model, and a pocket for small items is not evidence that a charger or dock will fit. Use the maker’s listed capacity and intended contents rather than inferring space from a product name.

  • PowerA Slim Case: up to 10 game cards.
  • PowerA Protection Case: nine game cards, two microSD Express cards and a pocket for small accessories.
  • RDS Deluxe Travel Case: its listing describes 12 game cards in one place but two four-card cases in its features. Because those descriptions conflict, its exact game-card capacity is unclear.
  • Belkin Travel Bag: a larger bag for organizing more gear than a fitted Travel Case; the available description does not establish a specific charger or dock fit.

For any case, look for an explicit dimension or a statement that names the accessory you plan to carry. A pocket described for a cable, earbuds or wrist straps should not be treated as a charger compartment; likewise, do not assume a dock fits unless the product listing says so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PowerA Protection Case has the clearest listed small-item organization among the examples here: nine game cards, two microSD Express cards and a pocket for small accessories, as well as a handle. That is useful if your regular travel kit includes those small items. But the wording “small accessories” does not settle whether a wall charger fits, and it says nothing about a dock. Check the case maker’s dimensions or an explicit accessory-fit statement for anything larger.

Be cautious with the RDS Deluxe listing’s card count. It mentions 12 game cards in its description, while the feature list describes two four-card cases. Those statements do not agree, so do not plan around a definitive capacity until the seller or manufacturer clarifies it. The hard-shell and recessed-insert descriptions remain useful for understanding the design, but they do not resolve the storage discrepancy.

Can a Switch 2 case hold the charger? Sometimes a larger bag may be designed for more equipment, but the examples’ general storage descriptions do not confirm that a particular charger or dock fits. A pocket for a cable, earbuds or wrist straps is not equivalent to a dedicated charger compartment. If charger carry is essential, look for a named charger fit, dimensions for the compartment, or a bag specifically described as accommodating more gear.

For game storage, compare the number of card slots with how many physical games you actually travel with. The Slim Case’s “up to 10” figure and the Protection Case’s nine-card figure are specific capacities; the RDS listing’s conflict makes its exact count uncertain. Nintendo also lists two microSD Express card spaces for the PowerA Protection Case. These are separate storage details, not an indication that the case can accommodate larger accessories.

Is the padded screen flap a screen protector?

No. A padded flap covers the display while the console is stored in the carrying case; an applied screen protector is a separate layer attached to the display itself. PowerA says the Slim Case’s play-stand flap doubles as a padded cover when the console is inside. Its separate Protection Case Kit includes two applied screen protectors.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

These serve different purposes: the flap is part of the case, while a protector is fitted to the screen. Neither replaces a closed carrying case for protecting the whole console during transit.

Think of the padded flap as part of the inside of the carrying case: it lies over the display when the console is stored. It is not an applied film or glass layer, and it does not attach to the screen in the same way a protector does. Conversely, a screen protector covers the display surface but is not a carrying case around the rest of the console. If you want both kinds of coverage, they are separate decisions.

PowerA’s Protection Case Kit is a separate product that includes two applied screen protectors. That listing supports the distinction between a padded case flap and a protector attached to the display. Neither a flap nor a protector should be treated as a substitute for closing the console in a carrying case when you transport it.

Which case should you choose?

Choose by the contents you carry and how you pack them, not by assuming the category name guarantees a protection level.

  • Choose a slim carrying case if you want the console and a handful of games in a low-profile case for an everyday bag, and do not need space for more gear.
  • Choose a travel case if a shell, handle or dedicated small-item storage better suits how you transport the console. Check the exact fit and accessory layout for the model you are considering.
  • Choose a larger travel bag if you want to organize additional gear rather than just carry the console in a fitted case. Confirm that the bag’s published dimensions and compartments suit your intended load.

Before buying, verify Switch 2 compatibility, the case’s stated internal fit, game-card capacity and what its accessory pocket is actually intended to hold. If a listing gives no impact-test result, treat its material and construction descriptions as descriptions—not as a guarantee against damage.

A useful buying sequence is to list what you will carry first, then match it to a case:

  1. Decide whether the console travels alone or with extras. For the console and games, a fitted slim case may suit an everyday bag. If you also want to organize several small accessories, compare a travel case with a pocket or a larger travel bag.
  2. Check the console fit claim. Look for Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility, and keep the Joy-Con 2 protrusions in mind. Nintendo’s approximate measurements are 4.5 × 10.7 × 0.55 inches with controllers attached and 1.2 inches at maximum thickness where controls protrude.
  3. Check dimensions and layout. The Slim Case’s published outside dimensions are 12.2 × 5.91 × 1.57 inches. For a larger bag, verify its dimensions and compartment arrangement against the items you intend to pack; don’t infer charger or dock fit from a small-accessory pocket.
  4. Count cards and small items. Compare the specific listed capacities: up to 10 game cards for the Slim Case, and nine game cards plus two microSD Express cards for the PowerA Protection Case. Treat the RDS card-count description as unresolved because its listing conflicts.
  5. Separate storage from impact claims. A handle, molded lining, sturdy outer shell or hard-shell construction can help you compare design, but does not establish a standardized protection level. No comparative drop test was performed for these examples.

For a compact everyday carry, the PowerA Slim Case is the direct example to compare: it is zippered, low-profile and sized with published exterior measurements, with up to 10 game-card slots. For a handle and listed small-item organization, compare the PowerA Protection Case. For a described hard shell and recessed insert, the RDS Deluxe is another option, but confirm the game-card capacity rather than relying on the conflicting listing. If you plan to pack more gear, compare the Belkin Travel Bag as a bag rather than treating it as interchangeable with a fitted case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my old Nintendo Switch case fit Switch 2?

Do not assume it will: Nintendo says Switch 2 is larger than the original Switch. Fit depends on the particular case’s interior and clearance around the controls; a case listing that explicitly names Switch 2 is the safer basis for choosing. Some current cases claim compatibility with multiple generations, but that claim applies to those specific models, not all older cases.

Can a Switch 2 case hold the charger?

Not necessarily. A pocket described for small accessories does not confirm that a wall charger fits, so look for a listing that names the charger or provides compartment dimensions before relying on it. Do not assume a dock fits unless the listing says so.

Does a hard-shell Switch 2 case guarantee protection from drops?

No. “Hard-shell” describes construction, not a standardized impact rating. Without a published test for the specific case, its drop performance is not established. No comparative drop test was performed for the examples discussed here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a slim case enough for Switch 2?

It can be enough for an everyday carry when your main goal is to carry the console and a few games with little added bulk. If you pack the console among luggage, want a handle or need organized accessory storage, compare travel-case features—but do not assume the label proves a particular level of impact protection.

Do I need a travel case for my Switch 2?

Not necessarily. A fitted slim carrying case may suit a console-and-games loadout. A travel case is worth comparing if its handle, described shell or small-item storage suits how you travel. Pick based on the features and fit of the exact model.

Is the padded screen flap a screen protector?

No. The PowerA Slim Case’s flap is a padded cover over the display while the console is stored in the case. An applied screen protector is a separate layer attached to the screen; PowerA’s separate Protection Case Kit includes two.

How many games does the RDS Deluxe Travel Case hold?

Its listing is inconsistent: the description says 12 game cards, while the feature details describe two four-card cases. Treat the exact capacity as unclear unless the manufacturer or seller clarifies it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a Switch 2 case fit the dock?

Do not assume so. The cited case descriptions do not establish that a dock fits. Check the exact product’s dimensions and compartments or an explicit dock-fit statement before buying for that purpose.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose a slim carrying case such as the PowerA Slim Case when you want to carry Switch 2 and a few games in an everyday bag with minimal added bulk. Compare a travel case when a handle, described shell or organized small-item storage matters, and consider a larger travel bag for more gear. Verify Switch 2 fit, account for the protruding Joy-Con 2 controls, and check each accessory compartment—case labels and construction descriptions are not drop-test ratings.
