A recognized cartridge still needs an internet connection for a software update. If the console does not recognize the card at all, use Nintendo’s game-card troubleshooting steps instead.
1. Test the Switch 2 internet connection
On the console, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Note whether the test succeeds, along with the displayed download speed, upload speed, and any error code. A stalled progress bar alone does not establish whether the problem is the network, a paused download, or storage.
Nintendo recommends keeping the console within 10 feet of the wireless router for a strong signal. If the test fails or speeds are slow, move closer and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Nintendo’s slow download and upload troubleshooting also suggests trying another Wi-Fi band or power cycling the modem and router.
If available, you can compare Wi-Fi with another wireless network or a wired connection through the Switch 2 dock. The console must be docked for a wired connection. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: if wired works while Wi-Fi does not, the wireless path may be involved. Look up any connection-test error code in Nintendo Support rather than guessing at its cause.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
2. Check whether the download is paused
Some games pause downloads while they are being played. Save your game and close running software before deciding that an update is stuck.
- Press HOME and open your user page.
- Select User Settings > Update Download Progress.
- Let the console connect online and check whether the download resumes.
If it remains paused or does not progress, continue with the connection and storage checks rather than repeatedly opening the game.

3. Start the game update manually
Nintendo Support says that when a software update is available and the Switch 2 is online, the console prompts you to download it when you start the game or application. If no prompt appears, initiate the update from HOME:
- Connect the console to the internet.
- Highlight the game on HOME without opening it.
- Press + or −, then select Software Update > Via the Internet.
To enable automatic updates for software, go to System Settings > System > Software Auto-Updates. Automatic updates do not remove the need for an internet connection.

4. Check free space and microSD Express compatibility
Game storage requirements vary; check the game’s physical packaging or its eShop listing, then compare the requirement with the space available on the console and supported storage. If space is insufficient, free space or consider a compatible microSD Express card.
Switch 2 supports microSD Express only. An ordinary microSD card used with the original Switch is not compatible unless it meets the Express standard. Nintendo says compatible microSD Express cards can store downloadable software, update data, and DLC, while game save data remains in system memory. The supported card capacity is up to 2 TB.

- Nintendo Switch 2 Micro SD Card; SanDisk
Do not format a card as a routine first step. Formatting deletes its data, which cannot be recovered; back up screenshots and videos before considering it.
5. Follow the steps for the displayed error code
Error 2005-0003
Nintendo advises leaving an inserted microSD or microSD Express card in the console until downloads are complete. Its troubleshooting steps include updating the system, restarting the console, checking card compatibility and reinserting the card, and trying another compatible card if available. Formatting may be part of the later troubleshooting sequence; back up screenshots and videos first because formatting erases card data. See Nintendo’s Error Code: 2005-0003 instructions for the full sequence.

Error 2002-5110
Nintendo’s steps depend on whether a microSD card is in use. With a card, the sequence includes updating the system, checking for corrupted data, redownloading software, and then considering formatting, another compatible card, or downloading to system memory. Without a card, update the system and check for corrupted data or redownload the software; if the error persists, Nintendo says the console may need service. Follow the complete Error Code: 2002-5110 instructions for your situation.

If the game will not start because the console cannot read the cartridge, that is a game-card read issue rather than an update download issue. For trouble with one card, Nintendo’s individual game-card steps include checking for a game-card software update. Do not remove a card while its game is suspended; close the title or power off the console first. If multiple Switch 2 game cards cannot be read, Nintendo directs users toward service.
