For a text-based swim lane diagram in JavaScript, use Mermaid’s swimlane-beta syntax in Mermaid v11.16.0 or later. For a diagram people must edit inside a web application, use a diagramming library such as JointJS. Choose BPMN when role boundaries need to follow a formal process notation; choose diagrams.net when visual templates and export options matter more than embedding the editor in your application.
What a swim lane diagram shows
A swim lane diagram divides a process by responsibility: each lane represents an actor, team, system, or phase, while nodes show work and arrows show order and handoffs. This makes it easier to see both what happens and who owns each step.
For example, a customer may submit a service request, Support may triage it and send an answer, and the customer may then receive an update. Placing those steps in Customer and Support lanes makes the transfer of responsibility visible alongside the sequence.
Create a swim lane diagram with Mermaid
Mermaid documents its swimlane diagram type as available in v11.16.0 and later. The feature is marked beta, and its syntax may evolve, so check compatibility if your documentation renderer pins an older Mermaid release or requires stable syntax. See the Mermaid swimlane syntax documentation.

Each top-level subgraph becomes a lane; put the steps owned by that participant inside it. Arrows between nodes show the sequence and cross-lane handoffs.
Mermaid is a good fit when a diagram belongs in documentation and should be maintained as text alongside code. Text authoring makes edits reviewable and version-controllable, but it is not a substitute for an interactive editor when users need to drag nodes or change graph state in the browser.

When to use an interactive JavaScript library
Use a library when the diagram is a feature of your application rather than an illustration rendered in documentation. JointJS describes itself as an open-source JavaScript and TypeScript library for interactive browser-based diagramming, with first-class React support. Its React quickstart uses data to describe the diagram and handles rendering, dragging, geometry, and links that follow their endpoints. See the JointJS documentation.
This data-driven approach suits applications that need editable nodes, custom shapes, or live graph state. It gives developers control over an in-product diagramming experience, but means the application team is responsible for building the UI and any export workflow it needs.

JointJS+ is a commercial extension with additional components and capabilities, including advanced layouts, import and export, printing, BPMN and VSM shapes, and other plugins. Confirm current licensing and program terms separately before selecting it; the open-source library and commercial extension should not be treated as interchangeable.

Choose BPMN for formal role boundaries
For formal process modeling, BPMN distinguishes pools and lanes: a pool contains an organisation or collaboration, and lanes within a pool represent specific roles. Both pools and lanes can be horizontal or vertical. This gives teams a more structured, stakeholder-readable way to express responsibility than informal lanes alone. The BPMN 2.0 specification defines the notation.

Use BPMN when readers need that notation and its role boundaries. A custom JavaScript diagramming library is the better direction when those diagrams must be embedded and manipulated as part of an application; verify that the specific library and edition supports the BPMN features your process requires.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which JavaScript swim lane approach should you choose?
| Option | Authoring model | Interactivity | BPMN fidelity | Integration | Export and collaboration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mermaid | Text syntax suited to version-controlled documentation. | Rendered diagrams; not an in-app drag-and-edit graph. | Informal responsibility lanes, not a substitute for BPMN semantics. | Render Mermaid where documentation or another supported renderer is used; swimlane syntax requires v11.16.0+ and is beta. | Text changes can be reviewed with documentation; export options depend on the renderer. |
| JointJS | Data-driven diagram built in JavaScript or TypeScript. | Interactive browser diagrams, including dragging and links that follow endpoints. | JointJS+ lists BPMN shapes; confirm the needed scope and licensing. | Designed for browser applications and has first-class React support. | Application-specific export work may be needed; JointJS+ documents import/export and printing capabilities. |
| diagrams.net | Visual editing with swimlane and flowchart templates; can generate from Mermaid code, SQL, or spreadsheets. | Browser or desktop visual editing. | Suitable for visual swimlanes; use a BPMN-focused workflow when formal notation is required. | Editor workflow rather than an embedded JavaScript graph library. | Documented export to PNG, SVG, PDF, HTML, or URL. |
The deciding question is where the diagram will live and who needs to change it. For documentation maintained as text, use Mermaid. For editable diagrams inside a web product, evaluate JointJS. For visual template-based creation and sharing, use diagrams.net. If the process must communicate formal BPMN roles, make BPMN support a requirement rather than assuming that any swim lane feature provides it.
