Survival horror makes danger management a central part of play: you may need to conserve supplies, avoid enemies, explore carefully, or solve puzzles while feeling vulnerable. Action horror puts more emphasis on confronting threats through combat. A game can include plenty of fighting and still be survival horror; the key is what its gameplay rewards.

How the two styles differ

The labels describe different gameplay emphases, not a strict division between games with combat and games without it. In survival horror, the player is often encouraged to weigh whether a fight is worth the risk. In action horror, combat tends to be a more frequent or expected way to make progress.

What to compare Survival-horror tendency Action-horror tendency
Player vulnerability The player is encouraged to feel exposed or at risk. The player is more capable of directly confronting threats.
Combat Fighting may be avoidable, rationed, or costly. Combat is more central to progression and moment-to-moment play.
Resources Limited supplies can make decisions about when to fight consequential. Fighting is more often an expected response to threats.
Progression Exploration, puzzles, finding routes, and staying alive can carry substantial weight. Encounters and combat challenges may carry more weight.

These are useful tendencies, not official rules or a universal classification system. Capcom’s 2012 comparison presents survival horror and action horror as distinct approaches, while Guinness World Records describes survival horror through evading attacks, solving puzzles, and opening routes and rooms. Capcom’s genre comparison and Guinness World Records’ account of the genre offer examples of those emphases.

Why weapons and combat do not settle the question

A survival-horror game can make combat necessary while still making the player feel under pressure. What matters is how often the game expects you to fight, how capable you feel when doing so, and whether supplies or safer alternatives affect your choices.

Dead Space shows the overlap

Electronic Arts calls the Dead Space remake a sci-fi survival horror game, while describing protagonist Isaac Clarke fighting to survive against hostile creatures. Its official description therefore pairs the survival-horror label with active combat. EA’s 2021 remake announcement uses that genre label; the Xbox listing describes the game’s strategic use of engineering tools to defeat enemies.

How to tell what kind of experience a game offers

Rather than relying on a store label or a single feature, consider what the game repeatedly asks you to do and what makes those decisions tense.

  • Combat frequency: Are encounters occasional obstacles, or does fighting occupy much of the play?
  • Vulnerability: Does the game encourage caution, or does it make the player feel equipped to take on threats directly?
  • Resource pressure: Do limited supplies make you weigh whether to fight, or is combat the routine answer?
  • Alternatives to fighting: Can evasion, route-finding, exploration, or puzzle-solving help you survive?
  • Progression: Is progress driven more by exploring and solving problems, or by overcoming combat encounters?

These questions help describe a game’s play loop, but they do not produce a binding industry-wide classification. A title can lean toward one style in one part of play and toward the other elsewhere.

Why the boundary is not always clear

Capcom’s 2012 discussion describes Resident Evil 4 as a major gameplay change for the series and says Resident Evil Revelations “sort of straddles” the two styles. Those examples show why it is more useful to talk about a game’s emphasis than to insist that every title fits a single, rigid category. The term survival horror itself is associated with Resident Evil (1996), though Guinness World Records notes that Haunted House (1981) already used horror and suspense elements later associated with the subgenre. Capcom’s comparison and Guinness World Records’ history provide that context.

Which style should you choose?

If you want tension built around caution, limited resources, exploration, and deciding when to avoid danger, look for games that lean toward survival horror. If you prefer a horror setting where fighting threats is a more central part of play, an action-horror emphasis may suit you better. For games between those poles, use the combat, vulnerability, resource, and progression questions above rather than treating the genre label as a guarantee.
