Super Mario Sunshine does not have a documented native-4K remaster. Nintendo’s official modern release is the 2020 Switch conversion in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which adds 16:9 HD rendering, updated controller bindings and HD-upgraded video over the 2002 GameCube original. A GamesRadar report says a Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online version arrived on August 13, 2026, but describes that presentation as 4:3 rather than the widescreen format used by 3D All-Stars.
That leaves a real gap for a definitive edition: sharper assets, modern display support, better camera and controls, accessibility options and carefully chosen fixes—not merely a larger resolution number.

Will Super Mario Sunshine get a 4K remaster?
There is no Nintendo-announced standalone 4K remaster in the documented releases. Nintendo’s published material identifies Super Mario 3D All-Stars as an enhanced Switch presentation of Sunshine, not a native-4K remake. Nintendo European Research & Development (NERD) says the collection uses GameCube emulation with 16:9 HD rendering, revised controller bindings and HD-upgraded in-game videos.

“4K” therefore remains a requested target, not a confirmed product specification. A future release could render at 4K output while still using upgraded textures, geometry, effects and interface assets; Nintendo has not stated that such a project exists.

Why a new edition would need more than resolution
Sunshine’s identity comes from FLUDD’s movement, Isle Delfino’s open hubs and water-focused platforming. A useful remaster would preserve those systems while addressing the friction that modern players notice: camera behavior, inconsistent control options, long travel between objectives, visibility in bright scenes and accessibility needs such as camera sensitivity and subtitle presentation.
Shigeru Miyamoto said in a 2013 interview that HD remakes were possible, but that Nintendo wanted “some way to bring a refreshing experience” rather than simply updating visuals. That principle fits Sunshine: a 4K output mode would be welcome, but quality-of-life work would determine whether the result feels definitive.
What is the difference between the GameCube original, 3D All-Stars and the Switch 2 release?
The three versions differ in display format, availability and input options. The table separates documented features from claims that have not been specified.

Is Super Mario Sunshine on Switch?
Yes, in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and reportedly through the Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online catalog. The 2020 collection bundled Sunshine with Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo ended eShop sales on March 31, 2021; physical shipments also continued only through that date while supplies lasted, so current boxed copies can be resale inventory rather than newly manufactured stock.
The reported Switch 2 subscription release changes access, not the historical status of 3D All-Stars. It should not be described as a 4K remaster unless Nintendo publishes that specification. The 4:3 description also means buyers seeking the 16:9 conversion should distinguish the two releases before choosing one.
What is the best way to play Super Mario Sunshine today?
For the clearest officially documented picture, use the Switch version in Super Mario 3D All-Stars. It combines emulated GameCube software with 16:9 HD rendering and upgraded videos, while retaining an option for original-style inputs. If you already have Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online, the reported subscription version is another legal route, but its reported 4:3 format makes it less suitable for players specifically seeking widescreen presentation.

Choose your setup
- Want widescreen HD and a packaged collection? Find a legitimate physical copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars; official digital sales ended in 2021.
- Want original GameCube behavior? Play the GameCube edition with compatible hardware and controller, accepting the original 4:3 output.

Using a GameCube controller with the Switch version
Nintendo support documents GameCube-controller compatibility for Sunshine in 3D All-Stars. You need a separately sold GameCube Controller Adapter, and Nintendo specifies TV mode for this setup. Connect the adapter to the dock, pair or connect the controller as directed by the console, then select the GameCube-style input option where the game presents its controller settings. The adapter and controller are separate purchases.

Is Super Mario 3D All-Stars worth buying?
It is the strongest official choice if you value 16:9 HD presentation and want Sunshine alongside two other 3D Mario games. Its limitations are equally important: Nintendo no longer sells it digitally, physical availability depends on remaining stock and resale pricing, and Nintendo does not call the presentation native 4K.
Reasons to choose it
- Documented 16:9 HD rendering instead of the GameCube original’s 4:3 frame.
- Higher-resolution presentation and videos upgraded to HD with NERD’s deep-learning video process.
- Updated controller bindings for Joy-Con play plus documented GameCube-controller support.
- One package containing Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy.
Reasons to hesitate
- Digital sales ended March 31, 2021, so a physical listing may be used stock.
- The collection is an emulation-based enhancement, not a ground-up remake with rebuilt assets.
- There is no Nintendo-published native-4K specification.
- A Switch 2 subscription version may use 4:3 presentation, according to the reported release coverage.
What should a genuine 4K remaster add?
A worthwhile project would treat image quality as one part of a broader maintenance pass.

- Modern rendering: 4K output options, clean HUD scaling, improved texture filtering and rebuilt effects that preserve the original art direction.
- Camera and controls: adjustable camera sensitivity, reliable stick-and-button mappings, gyro as an option rather than a requirement, and full support for modern and GameCube-style controllers.
- Quality of life: faster retries, clearer objective tracking, sensible checkpointing and reduced menu friction without removing the challenge of collecting Shine Sprites.
- Accessibility: subtitle controls, high-contrast interface options, remappable inputs, adjustable motion features and assist settings that do not overwrite the standard campaign.
- Preservation: the original soundtrack, movement physics and Isle Delfino layouts should remain available as the baseline, with any changes documented and optionally toggled.
Nintendo’s own stated preference for a “refreshing experience” supports this broader definition of a remake. Until the company announces a project and publishes technical details, every claim about 4K output, rebuilt assets or new features remains hypothetical.
