You can run it as a GitHub Action or in an OCI-compatible container environment such as Docker. It can centralize checks across supported languages, but it is not one universal analyzer: the right fit depends on its tool coverage, configuration, and how your team wants to handle fixes.
What Super-Linter does
Super-Linter runs established linting and formatting tools against repository files, then reports findings in console output and, when used in GitHub Actions, through workflow status checks. Its purpose is to help teams apply consistent checks across languages and file types. The project describes itself as “a ready-to-run collection of linters and code analyzers, to help validate and fix your source code.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent performance or quality assessment. Because its coverage is a matrix of individual tools, support for one language or file type does not imply that every relevant check is included. Check the project’s current supported-tools list against the exact formats and rules your repository needs.
How to run Super-Linter
Use it in GitHub Actions
The project’s workflow example checks out the repository and then invokes Super-Linter as an action. It runs on pushes and pull requests and checks out full Git history. The example uses a version tag; choose and pin a tag that exists in the project’s release history rather than assuming an example tag is the newest one.

Workflow permissions depend on the features you enable. Checkout needs repository read access; optional comments and status reporting can require additional issues, pull-request, or status permissions. Grant only the permissions needed for the outputs your workflow uses, and review the current workflow example and action guidance before adopting it. Super-Linter README and workflow example
Run it in a container
Super-Linter can also run outside GitHub Actions through an OCI-compatible container runtime such as Docker. This can suit local checks or CI systems that do not use GitHub Actions, though you will need to provide the repository files and configure the container invocation for your environment. The project documents environment variables and container usage in its README. Container usage documentation
Check language coverage and image contents
The standard variant includes all supported linters. The slim variant leaves out Rustfmt, Rust Clippy, Azure Resource Manager Template Toolkit, PSScriptAnalyzer, and .NET commands and subcommands, according to the project README. Choose based on required checks, not just the variant name: confirm that the selected image includes every tool the repository needs and that none of the slim exclusions are required.
Coverage and included tools can change over time. Review the current support matrix and variant details when selecting an image or updating its tag. A bundled tool can check only the files and rules that it supports and is configured to inspect.

Configure rules without losing checks
Super-Linter accepts environment-variable settings and supported linter configuration files. Its templates provide defaults for some tools, but placing a custom file in LINTER_RULES_PATH can replace a default configuration rather than merely add to it. Compare the effective rules with the project’s defaults and verify that required rules remain enabled.
Some tools also discover configuration independently. The README calls out Biome, Prettier, and Commitlint, so check each tool’s own configuration behavior as well as Super-Linter settings. Configuration guidance in the README
What fix mode can and cannot do
Fix mode is available for supported tools, but its behavior depends on the tool and settings. It does not mean every reported issue can be repaired automatically; some findings require a developer to change code or configuration. The README also warns that some fixers may not preserve original ownership of files or directories. Review the specific fixer behavior and run fixes in a controlled workflow before relying on them to modify repository files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether Super-Linter fits your repository
- Coverage: Does the current tool matrix include every language, file type, and security or configuration check you require?
- Variant: Does standard or slim include the tools you need? Are slim’s exclusions acceptable?
- Configuration: Can you use your existing rule files without unintentionally replacing important defaults?
- Execution: Does GitHub Actions or a container-based run suit your CI and local workflows?
- Permissions: Can the workflow grant only the access needed for checkout, comments, and status reporting?
- Fix policy: Do you want check-only runs, or have you reviewed the supported fixers and their effects on files?
Super-Linter offers a convenient way to coordinate multiple established checks, but it does not eliminate the need to choose tools, rules, and workflow behavior deliberately. The project says it is MIT-licensed and maintained by independent developers rather than commercially backed by an entity. It also says parallel execution has been used since v6; the project material cited here provides no independently measured runtime benchmark or specific speedup. Project README
