There are two correct ways to order the numbered Street Fighter games. For the history of the series, use release order: Street Fighter (1987) → Street Fighter II (1991) → Street Fighter III (1997) → Street Fighter IV (2008) → Street Fighter V (2016) → Street Fighter 6 (2023). For the fictional chronology, use Street Fighter → Street Fighter Alpha era → Street Fighter II generation → Street Fighter IV → Street Fighter V → Street Fighter III → Street Fighter 6.

The apparent contradiction is caused by Street Fighter V: it was released after Street Fighter III, but Capcom places its story between Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III. The Alpha games fit between the original and II, while Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting and Super Turbo are revisions within the same Street Fighter II era rather than additional numbered chapters.

The complete numbered timeline at a glance

Entry First release milestone Story position Classification
Street Fighter 1987 arcade Earliest tournament era Numbered mainline starting point
Street Fighter II 1991 arcade After the original and Alpha era Numbered mainline; its major revisions form one generation
Street Fighter III 1997 arcade After Street Fighter V Numbered mainline; later future of the saga
Street Fighter IV 2008 arcade; home versions followed in 2009 After Street Fighter II and before Street Fighter V Numbered mainline
Street Fighter V 2016 Between Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III Numbered mainline; chronological bridge
Street Fighter 6 June 2, 2023 Latest chapter, after the established III-era placement Current numbered mainline sequel to V

Capcom describes the original as an arcade release from 1987, identifies Street Fighter II as the 1991 follow-up, and calls Street Fighter 6 the newest title and sequel to Street Fighter V. Those statements establish the numbered release sequence. The story sequence requires a separate view because release dates and fictional chronology are not the same thing.

Release order: the series as players received it

Release order is the best route if you want to understand how the franchise developed from one numbered generation to the next. It also prevents a common mistake: treating every arcade revision as a new mainline chapter.

  1. Street Fighter (1987): the original arcade game and the starting point for the early Ryu-and-Ken era.
  2. Street Fighter II (1991): the breakthrough World Warrior generation and the direct numbered successor to the original.
  3. Street Fighter III (1997): the third numbered chapter, released before IV and V even though its story occurs later than both.
  4. Street Fighter IV (2008 arcade; 2009 home versions): the fourth numbered game, released after the III generation but written as a continuation of the II-era point in the story.
  5. Street Fighter V (2016): the fifth numbered game and the entry that explains the largest release-order/story-order reversal.
  6. Street Fighter 6 (June 2, 2023): the latest numbered chapter and Capcom’s sequel to V.

Why the Street Fighter II revisions stay together

Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting and Super Turbo were sold as separate upgrades, but they belong to the same broad Street Fighter II generation for chronology. They refine and rebalance the II formula rather than creating separate numbered eras. Counting each one as another mainline game produces an inflated timeline and makes the later numbered entries appear farther apart than they are.

Story order: the events inside the Street Fighter universe

Use this order when your priority is narrative continuity rather than publication history. The Alpha titles are a subseries inside the early timeline, and the II revisions remain one story era.

  1. Street Fighter
  2. Street Fighter Alpha / Zero era
  3. Street Fighter II generation
  4. Street Fighter IV
  5. Street Fighter V
  6. Street Fighter III
  7. Street Fighter 6

1. Street Fighter: the earliest tournament era

The original game occupies the first point in the fictional chronology. It establishes the early tournament period and the foundational Ryu-and-Ken setting. It is also the first release historically, so there is no separation between its publication position and its story position.

2. Street Fighter Alpha / Zero: the prequel branch

The Alpha games, known as Zero in some regions, sit between the original Street Fighter and Street Fighter II. They are a major canonical prequel branch, not additional numbered chapters. Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 should be treated as refinements within this same era. If you want every important story period, place Alpha after the original and before II; if you only want numbered games, omit Alpha from the mainline list while keeping its chronological position in mind.

3. Street Fighter II: the World Warrior generation

The II generation follows Alpha in the story. It includes the original Street Fighter II concept and its Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting and Super Turbo revisions. Playing every revision is optional for chronology because they represent one broad era. Choose one version for a first pass, or sample the revisions if you are interested in how the arcade generation evolved.

4. Street Fighter IV: after II, before V

Street Fighter IV is the next story step after the II era. Its arcade debut was in 2008, with home versions following in 2009, but its narrative placement is determined by the events rather than those release dates. Capcom’s chronology places IV before V.

5. Street Fighter V: the bridge between IV and III

Capcom’s official Street Fighter V story description explicitly says that it takes place between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III. That is why a player following story order goes from IV to V to III, despite III having launched in 1997 and V in 2016.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Street Fighter III: the later future

Street Fighter III is the third numbered release, but it represents a later point in the established saga than both IV and V. Moving from V to III in story order follows Capcom’s stated “between IV and III” chronology for V.

7. Street Fighter 6: the current chapter

Street Fighter 6 launched on June 2, 2023. Capcom calls it the sequel to Street Fighter V and the newest title in the series. Its placement after III follows the established chronology in which V comes between IV and III, making 6 the latest chapter in the numbered sequence used here. The exact date of an in-universe setting is not needed to place it: it is the post-III continuation for a story-focused playthrough.

Which order should you play?

Choose release order for historical context

Play the six numbered games in their launch sequence if you want to see the franchise’s design and presentation change over time: original Street Fighter, II, III, IV, V, then 6. This route mirrors what audiences experienced and keeps each numbered release in its historical context. You can add the II revisions after the first II session without changing the overall route.

Choose story order for narrative continuity

Use Street Fighter, the Alpha era, one representative II version, IV, V, III and 6. This route resolves the V/III reversal before you encounter it and gives Alpha its proper prequel position. It is the clearest option if your main question is “what happens next?” rather than “what released next?”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a compact numbered-only route

If you want the shortest path through the mainline, play Street Fighter, II, III, IV, V and 6 in release order, or Street Fighter, II, IV, V, III and 6 in story order. The second route deliberately moves IV and V ahead of III because of the canonical chronology. Alpha is important context but is not required to understand the six-numbered-title framework.

How to handle the classic versions without buying everything

You do not need to play every separately sold version of Street Fighter II to follow the timeline. Treat the revisions as alternate milestones inside one generation and select the edition that best suits your interest. A preservation-focused route can use Capcom’s Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, which bundles historically important versions including Hyper Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. The collection’s purpose is to bring notable versions together; it does not change the story sequence.

For Alpha, playing Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 is optional if your goal is simply to understand where the subseries belongs. They are refinements within the same prequel era, not two additional numbered chapters. For II, one version is enough for a first chronological run, with the other revisions available as historical comparisons.

Common timeline mistakes

  • Putting III immediately before IV in story order: that is release order, not the established narrative order. V is explicitly between IV and III.
  • Putting V after III because it released later: release date does not determine V’s fictional placement.
  • Counting Alpha as numbered mainline: Alpha is a canonical prequel branch between the original and II, but the clean numbered list has six titles.
  • Counting every II upgrade as a new story chapter: Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting and Super Turbo belong to one II generation.
  • Assuming 6 is before III because it is the sixth numbered title: the established chronology places 6 after the III-era position, while Capcom identifies it as V’s sequel and the newest numbered entry.
