Street Fighter 6 is the better starting point for most complete beginners. Its Modern controls reduce execution demands without removing regular-play options, Dynamic controls support quick offline matches, and World Tour, Fighting Ground training, and character guides create a clear learning path. Choose Mortal Kombat 1 instead if your priority is a cinematic story, graphic presentation, or the Kameo partner system, even though that adds another combat layer to learn.

The short answer

Pick Street Fighter 6 when you want the game to teach you how to play fighting games. Capcom offers Classic, Modern, and Dynamic control options. Modern and Dynamic were introduced to improve accessibility for first-time players and people returning after a long break. Modern works in regular play, while Dynamic is limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes. Beyond controls, Street Fighter 6 gives you several ways to practice: the avatar-based World Tour campaign, Fighting Ground training, arcade and ranked modes, and character guides.

Pick Mortal Kombat 1 when the main attraction is a dramatic, story-led experience with a distinctive assist mechanic. Its Story mode is built as a cinematic campaign, and Invasions adds progression and role-playing-style elements. During matches, a separately selected Kameo Fighter can provide special moves, throws, and defensive breakers. That system creates options that are exciting to explore, but it also means a new player is learning both a main fighter and an assist partner.

There is no published statistic proving that one game produces faster beginner wins or longer retention. The recommendation therefore depends on the documented onboarding systems, control choices, and modes each game provides.

Why Street Fighter 6 is easier to start

Modern controls lower the first execution barrier

Traditional fighting games ask you to combine directional inputs, attacks, timing, blocking, and spacing before a move comes out reliably. Street Fighter 6 addresses that initial barrier with Modern controls. Capcom describes Modern and Dynamic as new options designed for first-time players and people who have not played a Street Fighter game in a long time.

Modern is not a separate beginner-only game or a tutorial sandbox. It is a control option you can use in regular play. That matters because you can learn match flow, movement, defense, and decision-making without first mastering every traditional input. You can then experiment with Classic controls when you want more manual control and a deeper execution challenge.

Dynamic is useful for quick offline sessions

Dynamic is intended for immediate, low-commitment play, but it has a specific limitation: it is available only in certain offline Fighting Ground modes. Treat it as a way to pick up a controller and start an offline match, not as the control scheme to build an online ranked routine around.

For a household sharing a console, Dynamic can make a short local session less intimidating. A player who wants to continue learning across the game’s broader modes should use Modern instead.

World Tour supplies a low-pressure route into the genre

World Tour is an avatar-driven campaign rather than a sequence of isolated versus matches. It gives a beginner a single-player context in which to become familiar with movement, attacks, and the game’s broader systems. Because it is separate from immediately facing experienced online opponents, it can serve as a first stop for someone who is uncomfortable losing in competitive matches.

World Tour should not replace focused practice. Use it to become comfortable holding the controller and recognizing attacks, then move to Fighting Ground training to repeat specific actions deliberately.

Fighting Ground and character guides make practice specific

Fighting Ground includes training, and Street Fighter 6 also provides character guides. Those tools let you narrow the problem: choose a character, learn what its attacks do, practice defending, and repeat an action until it becomes familiar. This is more useful than playing random matches while changing characters after every loss.

Arcade mode offers a bridge between training and competitive play. Ranked mode is available when you are ready to test those skills against other players. You do not need to start in ranked mode to get value from the game.

Why Mortal Kombat 1 may be the better choice

The Story mode is the central attraction

Mortal Kombat 1 presents a cinematic Story mode built around the series’ dramatic narrative and presentation. If your first question is “Does it have a good story mode?” the answer is yes in terms of its intended structure: Story is a major single-player mode, not a small collection of arcade scenes.

This makes Mortal Kombat 1 appealing to players who want a guided spectacle before they care about competitive fundamentals. You can experience the campaign’s set pieces and combat encounters without committing to online matchmaking.

Invasions adds progression and RPG-style mechanics

Invasions is another single-player route, using progression and RPG-style mechanics. It changes the rhythm from a straightforward ladder of fights to a mode built around advancement and repeated encounters. Players who enjoy unlocking progress and moving through a changing map may prefer this structure to World Tour’s avatar adventure.

Kameo Fighters create a second-character decision

The Kameo system is Mortal Kombat 1’s defining mechanical difference. You select a Kameo Fighter separately from your main character. During a match, the partner can provide special moves, throws, and defensive breakers. The result is a larger set of possible interactions than a single-character moveset provides.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

For a beginner, the benefit is variety: a Kameo can give your chosen fighter additional ways to attack, escape pressure, or break through an opponent’s plan. The cost is cognitive load. You must learn when to call the partner, how the assist changes your options, and how an opponent’s Kameo affects the match. If you prefer to focus on one character at a time, Street Fighter 6’s control progression is more straightforward.

How the learning curves differ

Street Fighter 6: execution can grow with you

  1. Start with Modern controls. Use them in regular play while you learn movement, blocking, jumping, and the purpose of your character’s attacks.
  2. Play World Tour. Use the avatar campaign to become comfortable with the game’s pace without beginning in ranked competition.
  3. Open Fighting Ground training. Practice one character’s basic attacks and defensive responses instead of switching constantly.
  4. Read the character guide. Use the guide to understand the character’s intended tools, then repeat those actions in training.
  5. Try arcade mode. This provides a match-focused step before you decide whether ranked play is enjoyable.
  6. Move toward Classic only when useful. Classic is available when you want traditional execution and more manual control; changing controls is an option, not a requirement for finishing the early learning stages.

Mortal Kombat 1: learn the fighter-and-Kameo pair

  1. Begin with the tutorials and practice features. Learn the basic controls and observe how your selected fighter’s actions work before adding a Kameo plan.
  2. Choose one main fighter. Staying with one character gives you time to recognize attacks and understand the character’s normal options.
  3. Add one Kameo partner. Practice its special moves, throws, and defensive breaker functions so the assist is part of your decisions rather than a button you press randomly.
  4. Use Story mode for guided play. The cinematic campaign lets you encounter combat while following the narrative.
  5. Use Invasions for progression. The RPG-style structure gives you a second single-player environment in which to keep practicing.
  6. Test multiplayer gradually. Try private matches or Kasual Versus before deciding whether Ranked Kombat League suits you.

Single-player content: avatar adventure versus cinematic drama

Street Fighter 6’s World Tour is designed around your avatar and provides a broad, exploratory entry point. It is the better fit if you want to spend time learning the world and systems through a personalized character while using other modes for focused practice.

Mortal Kombat 1 divides its single-player appeal between a cinematic Story campaign and Invasions. Story is the stronger choice for narrative momentum and dramatic presentation. Invasions is the stronger choice for players who like progression systems and RPG-style mechanics layered onto fighting encounters.

Neither mode should be treated as proof that one game is objectively easier. They support different motivations: Street Fighter 6 emphasizes a staged path into the genre, while Mortal Kombat 1 emphasizes spectacle and progression.

Online, local, and cross-platform play

Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6 includes arcade and ranked play in addition to its offline and training-oriented Fighting Ground options. It also supports local play, so a beginner can learn with a friend or family member on the same setup before entering matchmaking. The available control scheme depends on the mode: Dynamic is limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes, whereas Modern is the practical accessible option for broader regular play.

Mortal Kombat 1

The official Mortal Kombat FAQ lists Story, Invasions, Ranked Kombat League, Kasual Versus, King of the Hill, and private matches. It also confirms rollback netcode, a network technology intended to make online matches more responsive when connections fluctuate.

Krossplay and Kross-progression are supported on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions identified by the FAQ. “Supported” matters: confirm that your exact edition and platform are included before buying, especially if you want to play with someone on another console. Console online multiplayer can also be subject to the platform holder’s current subscription rules.

Content and household suitability

Mortal Kombat 1 is built around graphic violence and Fatality presentations. That tone is part of its identity, but it may be unsuitable for some players or households. Check the age rating and content descriptors for the exact platform edition before purchase.

Street Fighter 6 has a different presentation emphasis and does not use Mortal Kombat’s Fatality format. If you are choosing a game for a younger player or a shared family room, review the platform’s rating information rather than relying only on the title.

What the optional DLC price does—and does not—tell you

The official Mortal Kombat FAQ lists the optional Kombat Pack at a suggested retail price of $29.99 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and $19.99 on Nintendo Switch. These are DLC prices, not the base-game price, and they do not determine whether Mortal Kombat 1 or Street Fighter 6 is the better beginner purchase. Store pricing, editions, and promotions can change by region and date, so check the listing for your platform before checkout.

Choose based on the kind of beginner you are

  • You have never played a fighting game: Street Fighter 6 gives you the gentlest route through Modern controls, World Tour, training, and character guides.
  • You want to learn traditional inputs eventually: Street Fighter 6 lets you begin with Modern and move to Classic when you are ready.
  • You want a story first and competition second: Mortal Kombat 1’s cinematic Story mode is the stronger match.
  • You enjoy experimenting with partner abilities: Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo Fighters add special moves, throws, and defensive breakers to every match.
  • You mainly play offline with friends: Street Fighter 6’s Dynamic option can help with quick sessions, while Mortal Kombat 1 offers private matches and local play features.
  • You need cross-platform online play: Mortal Kombat 1 documents Krossplay and Kross-progression for supported PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions; verify the exact edition and platform combination first.
  • You are sensitive to graphic violence: Review Mortal Kombat 1’s rating and content descriptors before choosing it.

Bottom line

Street Fighter 6 is the safer recommendation for a first fighting game because its controls and learning modes are intentionally layered: Modern lowers the execution barrier, Dynamic handles limited offline quick play, and World Tour, training, arcade, ranked, and character guides let you advance at your own pace. Mortal Kombat 1 is the better alternative when cinematic storytelling, Invasions progression, and the Kameo assist system matter more than having the clearest staged introduction.
