If StreamYard says your YouTube broadcast has an invalid stream key, first confirm how that YouTube destination is connected. If it uses a stream key, copy the current key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio and update the key used by that StreamYard destination. Check the YouTube server URL separately. If StreamYard connects through YouTube account sign-in instead, there may be no key to refresh; YouTube advises contacting the streaming software provider.
YouTube’s official troubleshooting covers encoder errors generally, not this exact StreamYard message. The steps below distinguish a stale or mismatched key from a URL mix-up, an account-login connection, or a separate stream-health problem.
1. Check whether the destination uses a stream key
YouTube supports both encoder connections that use a stream key and third-party software connections that sign in to YouTube without one. Don’t assume StreamYard has an editable key field in every connection mode. If the destination uses account sign-in, follow YouTube’s direction to contact the software provider rather than searching for a key field that may not exist. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explains these different paths.
2. Refresh the key for the intended YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live / Live Control Room. Select the stream you intend to send to, then open its Stream tab.
- Copy the stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends copying the key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder when troubleshooting an encoder error. Treat the key as private: YouTube describes it as a credential that directs the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Manage live stream settings.
- Update the key used by the actual StreamYard destination. Make sure you are changing the destination used by the broadcast that shows the error. StreamYard’s precise current controls for this issue are not established here, so consult its current interface or support if you cannot identify the saved connection.
- Try the broadcast again and check Live Control Room. Confirm whether YouTube accepts the feed or reports a different message.
3. Make sure the server URL and key are in the right fields
The server URL and stream key are separate encoder settings. If StreamYard presents both fields, check that the YouTube server URL is in the URL field and the copied key is in the key field. Do not paste the key into the server URL field, or vice versa. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes entering both values separately: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

If StreamYard’s destination setup does not show those controls, don’t guess at an alternate URL or hidden setting. Check StreamYard’s current help or ask its support team how to refresh that connection.
4. Check whether the key was reused or reset
Reused stream settings
YouTube’s “Reuse settings” copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. A newly created stream may therefore still use the previous key rather than a newly generated one. Compare the key used by the StreamYard destination with the key shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room. YouTube explains stream settings and key reuse.

A reset key
If someone reset the key, update the encoder or connection with the new value; changing a key in YouTube does not automatically update a separately configured encoder. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. If you lack that permission, ask an owner or manager to check it.
5. Distinguish an invalid key from a stream-health error
If the connection starts but YouTube reports that the incoming feed is unhealthy, read the exact message and its timestamp beside the Health Indicator in Live Control Room. YouTube documents separate ingest errors involving format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe frequency, and resolution. Those messages point to feed or encoding settings; they are not, by themselves, proof that the stream key is invalid. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

6. Troubleshoot by symptom

- Contact StreamYard if the destination uses account sign-in, if you cannot locate the current key controls, or if refreshing a confirmed key and checking the URL do not resolve the StreamYard destination error. Ask for its current reconnect workflow; the exact present-day StreamYard interface for this message is not confirmed here.
- Ask a YouTube channel owner or manager to reset the key if needed and you do not have permission to do so.
- Use the specific YouTube health message when the connection is established but the feed is unhealthy; credentials and encoding diagnostics require different fixes.
