If your Streamlabs Talk Studio source is black, first check which camera or screen-share source is selected, whether it is set to appear on stream, and whether your browser and operating system allow access. Close other apps that may be using the camera before considering replacement hardware.
First, find where the image turns black
Check whether the source is already black inside the Talk Studio studio or whether the studio preview looks right but the YouTube destination is black. Streamlabs’ camera and screen-sharing guidance covers capture and source visibility in Talk Studio; it does not document YouTube-side black-preview diagnosis. If only the destination is black, do not assume the Talk Studio camera steps explain the problem.
Fix a black camera source
Choose the intended camera and show it on stream
- In Talk Studio, locate the source panel on the left, where cameras, screen shares, co-hosts, and guests appear.
- Use the arrow beside Stop Video to open Video Input, then select the camera you intend to use. A different camera may be selected.
- Check the source’s visibility control. Choose Show on stream if the camera should appear in the outgoing layout; a hidden source will not appear there. Streamlabs explains camera selection and source controls in its Talk Studio Camera Troubleshooting guide (published April 7, 2023; last updated October 29, 2025).
Allow camera access in the browser
Talk Studio needs browser permission to use the camera. If the permission prompt did not appear, or access was denied earlier, use the site controls beside the browser address bar to allow camera access, then refresh the browser. In Firefox, check its camera and microphone permission indicator; Streamlabs says Firefox is supported, though features may be limited.
Check your operating-system permission
- Windows: Open Settings > Privacy > Camera. Confirm camera access is enabled, including access for desktop apps.
- Mac: Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and make sure your browser is allowed.

Close other apps using the camera
A video-call app or other program using the camera can prevent Talk Studio from accessing it. Close other apps that may be using the camera, then relaunch the browser and check the source again, as Streamlabs advises in its camera troubleshooting guide.
Fix a black screen share
Allow screen recording on macOS
For screen sharing on a Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording and allow the browser you use for Talk Studio. Relaunch the browser if macOS prompts you to do so.

Select and display the right shared source
Talk Studio can share an entire screen, a browser window or tab, and slide, image, or PowerPoint files; it also supports video and background audio. The share appears as a source in the studio, so check that you selected the intended screen or window and that its source is set to Show on stream. Check general setup if source checks do not help
Streamlabs recommends using Google Chrome or Safari and a stable internet connection. Its Talk Studio Getting Started guidance lists upload requirements of 5 Mbps for 720p (10 Mbps recommended) and 10 Mbps for 1080p (20 Mbps recommended). These are Streamlabs’ setup figures, not proof that a slow connection causes a black camera image.

Troubleshoot by symptom

When to consider hardware
Do not start by buying a webcam, cable, hub, or capture card. The documented first checks are source selection and visibility, browser and operating-system permissions, and camera contention. Consider replacing or adding hardware only if separate checks show the existing device is faulty or does not meet your needs.
