To send video to YouTube Live, create or open a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into an encoder, set compatible video and audio output, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; HLS is an alternative for HDR or codecs RTMP does not support when your encoder can output HLS.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A YouTube channel that can use live streaming and access to YouTube Studio. Account eligibility and interface availability can vary.
  • A video source and encoder: for a simple setup, that can be a webcam and software encoder; more involved productions may use professional hardware encoding equipment.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate, plus headroom for fluctuations and other network use.
  • The stream URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password: it identifies where your encoder sends its feed.
  • Permission to broadcast every video, music track, image, and other material in the stream. Technical acceptance by the encoder or YouTube does not establish that you have the rights to use the material or that the content complies with YouTube policies.

Create the YouTube stream and connect your encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create a scheduled stream or select the Stream tab.
  2. Open Stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, select its YouTube preset if available; otherwise paste the URL into the server or ingest URL field and the key into the stream-key field. Follow YouTube’s instructions to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL if you intend to use RTMPS; the default URL shown may be ordinary RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  3. Choose the protocol, output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and bitrate in the encoder. Use the settings below as a starting point and confirm your encoder supports the combination. YouTube says the standard Live Control Room workflow detects encoder settings and transcodes the stream into formats for viewers; your encoder still needs to send a compatible, stable feed. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for combinations not shown here.
  4. Start the encoder. Wait for the Live Control Room to show a preview and stream-health information. Check that the picture, motion, and audio are correct; then select Go live when you are ready to begin the event. For a scheduled production, YouTube advises setting up early and starting the encoder before the event.
  5. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Choose RTMPS or HLS

RTMPS for a typical live encoder

YouTube recommends RTMPS: RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection to encrypt the feed into and through Google’s servers. Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room, and enter the matching stream key. If an SSL error persists, verify that you selected the RTMPS endpoint rather than RTMP; YouTube also suggests trying port 443. Details are in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

HLS when the production needs it

YouTube positions HLS ingestion as an option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It requires an encoder that can output HLS. The HLS URL begins with HTTPS; select HLS when creating the appropriate stream key and configure the encoder with that URL and key. For HDR, YouTube’s instructions say to leave manual resolution unchecked. Check YouTube’s HLS setup instructions before configuring this less typical workflow.

Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. The recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. The guidance also specifies progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR; H.265 is specified for HDR, while AV1 is not supported for HDR. Verify the current table and your encoder’s actual capabilities before a production stream, because supported settings can change.

The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that a particular device or connection can sustain the stream. The table reports a minimum and a recommended bitrate for each listed resolution and frame rate.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

Codec matters: for example, YouTube’s table lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p/30, and 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended for those codecs at 2160p/60. Do not assume those values apply to H.264 or interpolate settings for an unlisted combination; use the complete YouTube encoder settings table.

Check upload capacity and rehearse the show

YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Check outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, and account for other people or devices sharing the connection. A nominal speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained capacity during a live event. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a reliable connection because an interruption can break the stream.

  • Rehearse with movement and sound representative of the actual program; a static test image will not reveal every problem with a fast-moving scene.
  • Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and verify the public or unlisted watch page and playback on a phone.
  • If a backup encoder or failover plan is part of the production, test the handoff before the event rather than assuming it will work under pressure.
  • For equipment decisions, match the source inputs and production complexity to the encoder. A laptop and webcam can suit a basic single-source broadcast; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. It does not establish a specific model as right for every production.

Protect the stream key and content rights

Do not publish or share the stream key: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If the key is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s live settings; update the encoder with the new key afterward. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Before streaming, confirm you have the necessary rights to the content and that the planned program follows YouTube’s live-streaming rules. This is especially important for music, video clips, and other third-party material. A working ingest connection does not prevent a rights or policy issue, and the settings guidance cited here does not determine whether a particular program is permitted.

Troubleshoot common ingestion problems

The encoder will not connect or the key is rejected

  • Copy the current stream key and server URL from the correct Live Control Room stream and check for spaces or an outdated saved key.
  • If the key was reset or exposed, replace it in the encoder. Check whether the encoder’s YouTube integration needs an update. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers connection issues.

RTMPS reports an SSL error or times out

  • Verify that the encoder supports RTMPS and that its server field contains the RTMPS URL, not the ordinary RTMP address.
  • Check the protocol and endpoint configuration; if the SSL error persists, YouTube suggests trying port 443.

The picture is unstable or stream health is poor

  • Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with actual available upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Reduce competing network traffic or use a more reliable connection. Recheck the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate against the encoder’s output capabilities and YouTube’s current table.

The picture or sound is wrong

  • Inspect the video and audio signals routed into the encoder, including the selected source and audio input.
  • Run a realistic rehearsal and inspect both the encoder output and the Live Control Room preview; do not rely on a test with no movement or representative audio.

You need HDR or a codec RTMP does not support

Check whether the encoder can output HLS. If it can, follow YouTube’s HLS instructions to choose the protocol, URL, and matching stream key. If it cannot, this workflow is not a fit for that encoder’s required output.
