Emulator stutter, crackling audio, and input lag can share a timing problem, but they do not always have the same cause. First determine whether the emulator is falling behind, the display is out of sync, the audio buffer is underrunning, the game has built-in input delay, or the controller path is adding latency. Then change one setting at a time. That approach is more reliable than lowering audio latency or enabling run-ahead before you know what is wrong.
Why is my emulator stuttering, crackling, or feeling slow?
Start by checking whether the emulator is maintaining full speed and presenting frames evenly. Crackling can be a symptom of an audio-buffer underrun or synchronization problem, while a buffer that is full can block emulation and contribute to a missed display refresh. The same timing trouble can make play look uneven or feel delayed, but a controller, display, or game-internal delay can also produce a similar complaint.
Use the symptom pattern to choose what to investigate first:

- Audio pops or drops out while the game otherwise appears to run normally: check audio underrun and blocking indicators, if available, before assuming the audio device is defective.
- Movement is smooth but controls feel delayed: isolate game logic, rendering, controller transport, and display processing rather than treating the issue as a performance problem.
- A brief hitch occurs when a new visual effect appears in Dolphin: investigate shader compilation separately from general slowdown.
For a 60 Hz display, one refresh interval is about 16.66 ms, according to Libretro’s 2026 documentation. A frame that takes longer than its available interval may miss a refresh; repeated or irregular misses can appear as judder even if an average FPS counter looks close to the target.

What should I record before changing settings?
Choose one game, one repeatable scene, and one controller. Record the configuration so you can compare a change with the original state and undo it if the symptom gets worse.
- Emulator version and, where applicable, core version
- Renderer or video backend and internal resolution
- Display refresh mode, VSync or VRR state, and whether the emulator is windowed or fullscreen
- Audio backend and configured audio latency
- Any speed, frame-time, audio-underrun, or audio-blocking indicator the frontend provides
- Whether overlays, recording or streaming software, heavy shaders, run-ahead, or frame delay are enabled
In RetroArch, enable the statistics overlay when available. Libretro’s documentation describes using it to observe FPS, refresh rate, audio underruns, and audio blocking. Change one variable at a time: adjusting several settings together can hide which one helped or caused a new problem. Keep a rollback point, especially before changing global settings.
A practical test log can be as simple as a few rows: baseline, one setting changed, and the result in the same scene. Note whether the game stayed at full speed, whether crackle stopped, and whether controls felt different. Restore the baseline before trying a separate setting. If a change improves one symptom but worsens another, record that trade-off instead of calling it a complete fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow can I tell whether the emulator is falling behind?
Look for a relationship between gameplay speed, audio behavior, and frame pacing. If movement and sound slow together, investigate emulation speed and synchronization before changing the audio device or controller.
Libretro’s explanation of audio rate control describes two timing failures. When there is not enough room in the audio buffer, the emulator may have to wait for space to become available; if the buffer runs out instead, the result can be an audible dropout. In other words, crackling does not by itself prove that a driver or speaker is faulty. It can be the sound of the emulator and audio output falling out of step.
In Dolphin, check renderer, internal resolution, shader behavior, and GPU load. Dolphin notes that game requirements differ, renderer performance varies by GPU, and visual enhancements can increase rendering work. A setting that works well for one title or graphics card is not a universal performance fix.

How do I fix refresh-rate and synchronization problems in RetroArch?
Measure or estimate the display’s actual refresh behavior, then make RetroArch’s configured vertical refresh value sufficiently close for Dynamic Rate Control. The operating system’s reported refresh value may not be accurate enough for synchronization, according to Libretro’s documentation.

- Check the display mode. Note whether the display is fixed-refresh or variable-refresh, and whether the emulator is running fullscreen. Windowed mode and automatic refresh switching can affect frame pacing.
- Estimate the running refresh rate. Use RetroArch’s statistics overlay and the running estimate rather than blindly copying the operating system’s nominal figure.
- Set the configured value. In RetroArch’s settings, locate Vertical Refresh Rate and enter a value close to the measured or estimated rate. Dynamic Rate Control depends on an accurate value; Libretro gives an approximate 0.1% accuracy target.
- Observe a sustained run. Libretro describes an uninterrupted 4,096-frame refresh-rate logging run, with 2,048 samples shown in its example. Use the overlay or logging behavior available in your build to see whether timing is stable rather than judging from a brief glance.
- Test the relevant synchronization mode. For a fixed-refresh display, choose a VSync and swap-interval combination compatible with the content rate. Retest the same scene and note whether audio underruns, blocking, or missed refreshes change.
Libretro describes Dynamic Rate Control as synchronizing video and audio at the same time. For fixed-refresh displays, its documented examples use refresh rates that are multiples of the content rate: 60, 120, 180, or 240 Hz for 60 Hz content, and 50, 100, 150, or 200 Hz for 50 Hz content. These examples describe cadence compatibility, not a promise that every display or configuration will behave identically.
On a VRR display, exact-content-rate synchronization can address a mismatch between content cadence and display refresh. Avoid combining VRR with incompatible black-frame-insertion or manual synchronization approaches. VRR can smooth cadence when the emulator is already keeping up; it cannot supply performance the host does not have.
Fixed refresh and VRR solve cadence in different ways. With fixed refresh, compatible VSync and swap intervals determine how content frames line up with display refreshes; the examples above show why multiples of a content rate can matter. VRR lets a compatible display vary its refresh to follow content timing, but requires support from the display and configuration. Neither choice should be expected to cure a game that is running below full speed.
How should I adjust audio latency without making things worse?
Keep audio synchronization enabled while diagnosing crackle, and look for underrun or blocking indicators where the frontend exposes them. Do not assume that the smallest audio-latency value is best: a buffer that is too small can run out while it refills, causing stutter or crackle.
Libretro’s 2026 documentation identifies 64 ms as the default audio-latency value and gives 35 ms and 52 ms as example test points, slightly longer than two and three 60 Hz frames respectively. Those are documented examples, not universal targets. A particular game, core, host, and audio backend may need a different stable setting.

Use a controlled comparison:
- Start from the current known configuration and note the audio latency and whether synchronization is enabled.
- Replay the same scene while watching for crackle, underruns, blocking, and frame pacing.
- If crackling suggests too little buffer headroom, increase latency modestly and repeat the scene. Check whether the audio steadies and whether perceived input delay becomes unacceptable.
- If the audio is clean but feels delayed, test a lower value in small increments. Stop when crackle or stutter returns, then restore the smallest value that remains stable.
A larger buffer generally allows more timing headroom but can add perceived delay. A smaller buffer reduces buffering delay but tolerates fewer frame-time spikes. If the emulator is missing full speed, solve that underlying performance or synchronization problem rather than trying to mask it with audio settings.
Should I turn on run-ahead to reduce input lag?
Run-ahead is intended to reduce input delay built into a game’s logic, not delay added by a television or monitor. Libretro describes the technique as rolling back state and calculating future frames; Batocera’s documentation explicitly cautions that the feature cannot reduce input lag caused by the display.
Use it only after the base configuration has stable frame pacing and audio. Begin with the minimum run-ahead value that addresses the game’s internal delay. More run-ahead increases CPU demand, and an excessive value can cause judder, dropped inputs, rollback artifacts, or audio problems. If your main issue is crackling or inconsistent pacing, reduce or disable run-ahead and frame delay until normal operation is stable.
Run-ahead is not a general-purpose “make controls faster” switch. Its benefit depends on the game’s internal timing and a stable emulator configuration, while its resource cost is paid by the host. If enabling it makes the game less consistent, turn it back off rather than compensating with unrelated audio or display settings.
How do I stop shader-compilation stutter in Dolphin?
Dolphin shader stutter is a rendering issue: specialized shaders may be generated when a new effect appears, and compilation can take longer than one frame. Dolphin’s performance guide says shader compilation settings can greatly influence performance. Choose a shader strategy based on whether you prefer lower overhead, less in-game hitching, or shorter startup time.
| Dolphin option | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Specialized shaders | Uses specialized shaders with lower overhead. | New shaders may hitch when generated during play. |
| Hybrid ubershaders | Uses ubershaders temporarily while specialized shaders compile. | Reduces compilation stutter, with additional rendering work during the transition. |
| Exclusive ubershaders | Uses ubershaders rather than waiting for specialized shaders to compile. | Can eliminate shader-compilation stutter but demands substantially more GPU power. |
| Skip Drawing | Avoids waiting for shaders to be ready. | Objects may temporarily be omitted from the image. |
| Compile Shaders Before Starting | Moves shader work to startup so shaders can be cached before play. | Can reduce in-game stutter after caching, at the cost of startup work. |
To narrow down the cause, replay the scene that hitches and note whether the pause coincides with a new effect or visual object. Then compare shader behavior without changing resolution or backend at the same time. If the hitch occurs throughout play rather than around new effects, investigate GPU load, internal resolution, and renderer choice instead.

Dolphin documents Vulkan, OpenGL, D3D11, D3D12, and Metal, with performance varying by GPU and backend. There is no universally best renderer established for every system. Test another supported backend if the current one behaves poorly on your hardware, while keeping the game and other settings constant. Dolphin also warns that VSync can add lag or cause half-speed behavior on displays limited to 30 Hz or lower.

Input delay can come from several places. A useful diagnosis isolates one path at a time instead of treating every slow response as a controller problem.
| Possible source | What to isolate | What the change can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Game-internal lag | Try run-ahead if supported and if the base configuration is stable. | May reduce delay inside game logic; does not remove display delay. |
| Emulator or rendering delay | Check host performance, renderer load, shader behavior, frame delay, and swapchain or synchronization behavior. | May improve timing or reduce rendering delay; heavy settings can instead cause missed frames. |
| Controller transport | Compare with another controller or use a wired USB connection. | Removes wireless transport as a variable; does not guarantee lower total latency. |
| Display processing | Check refresh mode, VSync or VRR configuration, and the television’s game mode. | Addresses display-side processing or cadence; does not make slow emulation run at full speed. |
A wired USB controller is a diagnostic option because it removes wireless transport from the path. Batocera documents USB polling-rate controls, but a wired connection is not a cure for display processing, renderer delay, or an emulator that cannot sustain full speed. Treat it as a way to remove one variable, not as a guarantee of a particular latency improvement.
Likewise, a VRR display is relevant only after full-speed emulation is established and the remaining problem is refresh cadence. For a fixed-refresh display, compatible VSync and swap intervals are the cadence tools; VRR offers a different approach when supported by the display and configuration. Neither purchase should be the first response to audio crackle or host slowdown.
Hardware isolation: If you already have access to a wired USB controller, use it to compare the same game and scene against a wireless setup. It removes wireless transport as one possible variable without promising to fix the other layers. A VRR gaming monitor is a more targeted consideration only if the emulator sustains full speed and testing points to refresh cadence; it is not a substitute for correcting timing or performance settings. No hardware purchase is necessary to begin this diagnosis.
What performance changes are safest to try first?
Prefer reversible changes that reduce workload before using advanced hacks. Dolphin warns that advanced hacks can break games, and some settings should remain automatic unless a title-specific reason supports changing them.

- Lower internal resolution. Retest the problem scene to see whether reducing rendering demand restores consistent pacing.
- Disable heavy shaders or overlays temporarily. Overlays and demanding shaders can affect frame pacing; close recording or streaming software as another controlled comparison.
- Try a supported renderer. In Dolphin, compare supported backends one at a time because performance depends on the GPU and backend combination.
- Check power behavior. Confirm that the system is not power-throttling while the game runs.
- Return timing experiments to baseline. Disable run-ahead and frame delay while diagnosing crackling or unstable pacing, then add them back only if the baseline is reliable.
Libretro identifies overlays, recording or streaming software, power-state changes, windowed mode, automatic refresh switching, threaded video, heavy shaders, run-ahead, and frame delay as factors that can affect frame pacing. This is why a single-variable test matters: a change can improve one symptom while concealing or creating another.
Which fix should I try for each symptom?
Use this as a starting decision guide, then confirm the result with the same game scene and configuration notes.
| Symptom | First investigation | Next controlled change |
|---|---|---|
| Game and sound both slow down | Check full-speed emulation, refresh mismatch, and frame pacing. | Reduce rendering burden or correct refresh and synchronization settings. |
| Crackling or dropouts | Check audio underrun and blocking indicators; keep synchronization enabled. | Test audio latency gradually while observing pacing. |
| Regular gameplay feels delayed | Separate game logic, emulator rendering, controller transport, and display processing. | Test run-ahead only for internal game lag; compare a wired controller for transport isolation. |
| Hitch when visual effects appear in Dolphin | Check whether the pause aligns with shader generation. | Compare shader compilation options or precompile before starting. |
| Judder despite a near-target FPS reading | Check actual refresh estimate, synchronization mode, and frame pacing. | Correct the configured refresh value or test compatible fixed-refresh/VRR behavior. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my emulator feel slow even though the FPS counter looks right?
An average FPS value can conceal uneven frame delivery: frames may arrive at irregular intervals even when the average is near the target. Compare the refresh estimate and pacing indicators over a sustained run, and check whether the symptom tracks particular effects or display modes.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a wireless controller cause emulator input lag?
Controller transport is one possible contributor, but it is only one part of the path from button press to displayed response. Comparing a wired controller can isolate wireless transport; it cannot establish or remove delay in the game, emulator, or display by itself.
Does run-ahead work with every emulator core or game?
Support and stability depend on the emulator or core and the game’s behavior; the technique relies on rolling back state. If the option is unavailable or causes artifacts or timing problems, leave it disabled rather than increasing it to compensate.
Why does VSync sometimes make an emulator run at half speed?
Dolphin’s performance guide notes that VSync can add lag or produce half-speed behavior on displays limited to 30 Hz or lower. If that describes the display, compare synchronization behavior carefully and restore the prior setting if speed worsens.
Should I buy a VRR monitor to fix emulator stutter?
Not as a first step. A VRR display can address refresh-cadence mismatch when emulation is already sustaining full speed and the display and configuration support VRR. It will not fix insufficient host performance, audio-buffer underruns, or game-internal lag.
Will increasing audio latency always stop crackling?
No. More buffer headroom can help if the buffer is too small, but it may add perceived delay and cannot repair an underlying full-speed or synchronization problem. Test values gradually while watching for underruns, blocking, and frame pacing.
The Bottom Line
Find the timing bottleneck before changing settings: confirm full-speed emulation, check frame pacing and audio indicators, then isolate display, controller, or game-internal delay. Adjust one variable at a time and keep a rollback point. Larger audio buffers, run-ahead, shader options, VSync, and hardware changes all have trade-offs; choose only the fix that matches the layer causing the symptom.
