Do not sell your 401(k) or IRA solely because stock prices fell. First check whether your retirement date, spending needs, emergency-cash position, contributions and tolerance for losses have changed. If your plan is still appropriate, keep investing if you can afford to, stay diversified and rebalance only to restore your chosen allocation. A market decline alone is not a reliable signal to move everything to cash.
The right response depends on your time horizon, need for withdrawals, account rules, tax consequences and concentration risk. The steps below separate decisions you can make now from situations that warrant a registered professional.
Start with a written snapshot of your situation
Volatility makes an account balance feel urgent, but the first useful action is to write down the facts that determine whether a change is justified. The SEC advises reviewing your financial roadmap, goals and comfort with risk before acting during a turbulent market. Use one page for both accounts so you are evaluating the plan rather than the latest headline.

A long horizon gives a portfolio more time to recover from short-term volatility; a near-term goal leaves less time to wait.
- Spending and cash needs: list expected withdrawals over the next several years and keep emergency cash separate from money intended for long-term growth.
- Income security: note salary, pension or other reliable income. A household with dependable income may be able to tolerate more market fluctuation than one relying heavily on the portfolio immediately.
- Contributions: record your current 401(k) deferral, IRA contributions and any employer match. Identify whether you could continue those payments without compromising essential bills.
- Current allocation: write the percentage in stocks, bonds and cash, plus the largest individual holdings, sectors and employer-stock positions.
- Risk tolerance and capacity: distinguish how you feel about losses from how much loss your timeline and finances can withstand. Investor.gov describes allocation as dependent on both time horizon and risk tolerance.
Do not make a rapid change simply to relieve anxiety. FINRA Senior Vice President of Investor Education Gerri Walsh summarized the behavioral risk this way: “One enduring truth about stock markets is that they go up, and they go down—and the steeper the rise or the fall, the more tempting it can be to derail a long-term strategy with a snap decision.”

Separate a falling price from a changed retirement plan
A lower account value is an event; it is not, by itself, evidence that your target allocation is wrong. Ask whether the facts behind your plan have changed.
When the plan may still fit
If your retirement date, income, emergency reserve and ability to keep saving are substantially unchanged, the decline may be within the range your allocation was designed to endure. Continuing the existing strategy can be reasonable if you understood that stocks are volatile in the short term and your mix reflects that risk.
When a reassessment is warranted
Reconsider the mix when your horizon shortens, you need withdrawals sooner than expected, income becomes uncertain, debt or cash demands rise, or you discover that a normal decline causes you to abandon the plan. A portfolio that looked acceptable on paper but prompts an immediate exit may contain more risk than you can realistically tolerate.

Reassessment does not automatically mean selling stocks. It means choosing an allocation that matches the new facts, then implementing that choice deliberately and tax-consciously.

Check diversification before changing risk
Investor.gov explains that diversification can reduce the impact of a decline in one sector or holding. Look through both accounts for exposures that could make a broad market decline especially damaging.
- Employer stock: your paycheck and retirement account can be tied to the same company. That concentration creates a different risk from owning a diversified fund.
- Single-sector funds: a technology, energy or other narrow fund can fall much more than a broad-market portfolio.
- Single securities: one stock, bond issuer or private investment can dominate results even when the account appears to contain several positions.
- Overlapping funds: several funds may own many of the same companies, so count the underlying exposure rather than the number of fund names.
- Asset-class gaps: review whether the portfolio has a deliberate mix of stocks, bonds and cash appropriate to your horizon.
Broad index funds and target-date funds are examples of diversified products, but neither is automatically suitable. Compare each option’s holdings, fees, risk, glide path and restrictions with your plan.
Rebalance to a target, not to the latest headline
Rebalancing means returning a portfolio to an allocation you selected in advance. It is different from chasing whichever asset recently rose or selling everything that recently fell.
A deliberate rebalancing process
- Write the target percentages for each major asset class and the allowable range around each target.
- Compare current percentages after the market move. A stock decline may leave you below your stock target; a bond or cash holding may be above it.
- Check whether new contributions can correct the difference before placing trades. Directing future contributions to an underweight option can reduce transaction activity, subject to your plan rules.
- Review fees, tax effects and any restrictions. A 401(k) trade generally occurs inside the plan, while an IRA transaction can have different tax and custody implications depending on what you buy or sell.
- Make only the trades needed to restore the chosen mix, then document the date and reason. Set a periodic review rule instead of reacting to each market move.
FINRA recommends maintaining diversification and rebalancing to remain aligned with your goals. It does not prescribe one stock-to-bond percentage for everyone; Investor.gov likewise ties allocation to personal horizon and risk tolerance.

Should you stop contributing to a 401(k) or IRA?
Stopping contributions is a major plan decision, not a default response to a decline. If contributions remain affordable, continuing the schedule preserves your saving habit and keeps the plan moving toward its goal. FINRA identifies goals and contribution planning as actions investors can control during turbulent markets.
Keep contributions going when
- Essential expenses and emergency reserves are covered.
- You are not replacing high-cost debt payments with retirement contributions you cannot afford.
- Your 401(k) contribution earns an available employer match under the plan’s rules.
- Your contribution rate is consistent with the retirement income you are trying to build.
Pause or reduce contributions when circumstances require it
A job loss, urgent cash need or unaffordable payment can justify a temporary change. Recheck the employer-match formula, waiting periods and any automatic-escalation settings before changing a 401(k) election. For an IRA, confirm the current tax-year contribution rules and deadline before deciding how much to deposit. Resume or revise the plan once the cash-flow problem is resolved rather than letting a temporary market reaction become a permanent change.
401(k) decisions are governed by the plan menu
A participant-directed 401(k) does not offer every investment available in the market. IRS guidance describes these plans as providing diversified options with different risk and return characteristics, with participants choosing among the menu. Read the plan’s investment descriptions, fee disclosures and restrictions before assuming a particular fund or trading feature is available.
Items to verify in your 401(k)
- Which stock, bond, stable-value and target-date options are currently offered.
- Whether an employer match, profit-sharing contribution or vesting rule affects the value of staying in the plan.
- How often exchanges are allowed and whether a fund imposes a short-term trading restriction.
- Administrative, investment and individual-service fees shown in the plan disclosure.
- Whether employer stock, brokerage-window or self-directed features create additional concentration or oversight issues.
Changing an investment election within the plan is not the same as taking money out. A withdrawal, loan or rollover can trigger separate tax, penalty, creditor-protection or plan-rule consequences, so review the specific transaction before submitting it.

IRA choices include custody, taxes and investment type
An IRA may provide a different range of custodians and investments from your workplace plan, but flexibility creates more decisions. Before selling, transferring or buying, identify whether the transaction changes the account’s tax treatment, generates a reportable event or incurs a fee.
Questions to answer before an IRA trade or transfer
- Is the account traditional, Roth or another tax category, and what tax rule applies to the proposed transaction?
- Will the move be a direct transfer, a rollover or a distribution that could create withholding or a deadline?
- What are the investment, account-maintenance and transaction fees?
- Does the custodian permit the asset, and how is its value determined?
- Are you moving out of a diversified holding into a concentrated or illiquid position?
Current contribution limits, rollover procedures and tax rules can change. Confirm them with the IRS or a qualified tax professional for the applicable year instead of relying on an old article or a social-media post.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When moving retirement money to cash can make sense
Cash can be appropriate for a known near-term withdrawal or as part of a risk level you selected before the decline. Moving an entire retirement account to cash solely because prices fell creates a different risk: you must later decide when to re-enter, and missing a recovery can permanently reduce the savings available for your goal. No authoritative source can provide a dependable date for the next recovery.

Avoid speculative reactions to a crash
Short selling, options, leverage and rapid trading can magnify losses. The SEC warns that short-term trading in volatile markets can produce significant losses, and FINRA cautions against letting social-media tips replace a documented plan. Do not borrow to buy a falling retirement asset or trade an instrument you cannot explain.
Warning signs of an unsafe tip
- It promises a guaranteed rebound, a precise recovery date or a risk-free return.
- It urges immediate action, secrecy or payment to an unfamiliar person.
- It recommends leverage, options or a single stock without discussing maximum loss.
- It omits fees, taxes, liquidity, custody and the effect on your overall allocation.
- It relies on a screenshot, influencer claim or anonymous message rather than verifiable disclosures.
Use official account statements and plan documents to verify what you own. A falling market is not a reason to suspend ordinary fraud checks.
Extra caution for self-directed IRAs
Self-directed IRAs can hold assets beyond a standard brokerage menu, but the custodian generally does not evaluate the investment’s quality. Investor-protection concerns include fraud, uncertain valuation, high or opaque fees and violations of tax rules.

Due-diligence checklist
- Confirm the custodian and promoter’s registration or authorization through official government resources.
- Obtain independent evidence for the asset’s value and understand how often it can be sold.
- List every fee, including custody, administration, appraisal, transaction and performance charges.
- Ask which transactions could create prohibited-transaction or reporting problems.
- Get advice from a professional who understands both the investment and IRA rules before transferring money.
When professional advice is worth the cost
Consider a registered investment or tax professional when the decision involves retirement timing, a rollover, concentrated employer stock, a major tax issue, a self-directed IRA or uncertainty about how much loss you can withstand. Ask how the person is compensated, what services are covered and whether the advice is delivered under a fiduciary obligation.
Verify registration and disciplinary history through official regulatory resources. A professional cannot predict the next market move, but can help coordinate allocation, withdrawals, taxes and account restrictions around your actual circumstances.
Questions to answer before placing any order
- What specific fact changed besides the market price?
- What allocation am I targeting, and how far is the account from it?
- Could contributions correct the difference without a sale?
- How much cash will I need, and when?
- What fees, taxes, restrictions or employer benefits apply to this transaction?
- Am I acting on a verified plan or on a prediction, tip or fear?
Document the answers, wait long enough to review them calmly and then make the smallest change that solves the identified problem.
