Choose Threads based on whether the Pi must stay responsive or is dedicated to analysis, then size Hash to the workload and available memory. There is no single best combination for every Raspberry Pi; the installed engine’s reported options and your use case should guide the final settings.
What settings matter most?
Stockfish’s UCI options let you trade off best-line quality, breadth of candidate moves, system responsiveness, and memory use. Defaults and allowed option ranges can change between releases, so check what your installed engine actually exposes rather than assuming a setting or limit.
- MultiPV: Set to 1 to focus the search on the strongest top line. Increase it when you want to compare several candidate moves.
- Threads: Choose how much CPU capacity Stockfish uses in parallel. Fewer threads can leave the Pi more responsive for a GUI or other services.
- Hash: Set the amount of memory, in MiB, used for the engine’s search table. Set Threads first, then tune Hash around the analysis workload and remaining system memory.
How should I set Threads?
For interactive use, begin with one or two CPU threads left available for the desktop, chess GUI, and other tasks. Stockfish’s general FAQ advises using the maximum available threads, “possibly leaving 1 or 2 threads free for other tasks”; treat that as broad guidance, not a Pi-specific guarantee. If the Pi is a dedicated headless analysis machine, compare higher thread counts with the same position, engine build, and analysis duration.
Pi 5 has four CPU cores. Do not interpret that as eight threads or assume it has desktop-style simultaneous multithreading. More threads may improve total search throughput, but they do not guarantee a better result for every workload or preserve responsiveness for other software.

How much Hash should I use?
Hash is set in MiB, and Stockfish’s FAQ says it need not be a power of two. Set Threads before Hash, then choose a value that fits the search and does not crowd out Raspberry Pi OS or the chess GUI. Stockfish gives these general one-thread gameplay examples:
| Use case | Stockfish FAQ Hash example |
|---|---|
| Ultra-bullet | 16 MiB |
| Bullet | 64 MiB |
| Blitz | 192 MiB |
These are Stockfish’s general examples, not settings proven optimal for a particular Pi. The FAQ says 64 or 128 MiB should be enough for shallow analysis; for deeper analysis, allocate as much as available memory permits while leaving room for the operating system and other applications. It also presents average hashfull below 30% as a strength guideline, not as a Raspberry Pi-specific measurement.

When should I change MultiPV?
Keep MultiPV at 1 when your priority is the strongest top line for the time available. Raising it asks the engine to search and report more candidate lines, which spreads effort across alternatives and reduces the quality of the top move for the same resources. Use a higher value when comparing candidate moves is more useful than maximizing the best line.
Do Skill Level or UCI_Elo make analysis faster?
No. These options deliberately make Stockfish play weaker by selecting suboptimal moves; they are playing-strength controls, not general-purpose speed controls for analysis. UCI_Elo applies only when UCI_LimitStrength is enabled, and takes precedence over Skill Level if both are set.

Which Stockfish build and Raspberry Pi setup should I use?
Match the engine to the CPU and operating system
Stockfish recommends a recent release and a binary selected for the CPU architecture. A generic or mismatched build may be slower than an appropriate one. Raspberry Pi OS is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions; its official documentation describes 64-bit as intended for newer capable models including Pi 3, Pi 4, and Pi 5, and notes that it can handle more memory. Pair the OS and engine binary deliberately, and verify the capabilities of the specific Stockfish build you install.
Pi 5 hardware context
Raspberry Pi 5 uses a Broadcom BCM2712 quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU running at 2.4 GHz, with RAM variants from 1GB to 16GB. Raspberry Pi’s product page claims 2–3× CPU performance relative to Pi 4, but that is a general hardware comparison, not a Stockfish benchmark; it does not establish a chess-engine speed ratio or nodes-per-second figure.

For sustained workloads, Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best performance under load and a quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for Pi 5. The official product page identifies the Active Cooler as an option. This is hardware guidance, not evidence that a cooler makes Stockfish stronger or yields a measured engine-speed gain.

- Choose one position and keep the Stockfish version and build fixed.
- Set a fixed search duration, then change only one setting at a time: Threads, Hash, or MultiPV.
- Compare best-line quality for that fixed duration, responsiveness while the GUI or other services run, and memory use against available RAM.
- For longer runs, observe sustained system behavior under load. If Stockfish reports nodes per second, record it as a local measurement rather than treating it as a general benchmark.
A Pi 4 versus Pi 5 comparison needs the same engine build architecture, position, search time, and relevant settings. Manufacturer CPU comparisons alone cannot establish which board analyzes Stockfish positions faster.
