Pause before making another trade. A 90% drop is serious, but it does not by itself tell you whether to hold, sell, or buy more. First verify what happened to the shares and the company, then judge the remaining position using current evidence, your financial needs, and your tolerance for further loss—not the price you originally paid. This is a decision framework, not individualized investment advice.

What does a 90% stock loss mean in dollars?

If a stock falls from $100 to $10, it has lost 90% of its value per share. From $10, it would need to rise $90—900% of the remaining price—to return to $100. That is arithmetic, not a forecast about whether the stock will recover, how long recovery might take, or whether it is likely at all.

The original $100 purchase price can feel like a natural reference point, but it does not establish what the company or its shares are worth today. The useful question is what the current investment case looks like now, including what has changed and what could happen next. A steep decline alone does not prove that a stock is cheap, doomed, or certain to rebound.

What should I check before deciding?

Start by confirming that you understand exactly what security you own and whether it is currently trading. A displayed price or percentage change can be difficult to interpret after a corporate action or when trading is disrupted.

Verify the shares and their trading status

  • Confirm the company name, ticker, number of shares, and account where they are held.
  • Look for a reverse stock split or another corporate action that may have changed the share count or quoted per-share price. The SEC explains that reverse splits may be used to raise a low per-share quote or pursue an exchange’s bid-price compliance. A changed quote by itself does not mean you recovered your loss. Investor.gov: Reverse stock splits.
  • Check whether trading is active, suspended, or taking place in a market with limited availability. If there is no market to sell, the SEC advises investors to seek current reliable information and consider asking their broker or an adviser about the shares. SEC: Trading suspensions and what investors can do.

If the broker’s displayed information conflicts with a company notice or exchange notice, do not assume you can transact at the displayed price. Ask the broker to explain the security status, any corporate action reflected in the account, and the available ways to handle the shares.

Read the company’s latest disclosures

Review recent company filings and material announcements for changes in financial condition, business prospects, and other developments that may help explain the decline. The SEC directs investors to company filings through EDGAR as part of evaluating an investment. Investor.gov: Five questions to ask before you invest.

Separate what the company has disclosed from what you infer from the price chart or commentary. A falling share price is an outcome to investigate, not a complete explanation. Consider whether available information points to a temporary setback, a lasting impairment to the business, financial distress, or uncertainty you cannot yet resolve. If the disclosure record is incomplete or difficult to interpret, treat that uncertainty as part of the decision rather than filling the gap with an optimistic assumption.

How do I compare holding, selling, and buying more?

Compare the choices as decisions you could make today. Ask whether you would choose this exposure at today’s price, based on current evidence and your goals, if you did not already own the shares. That prompt can expose attachment to the purchase price, but it does not predict returns or replace your own assessment.

Choice When it may fit What to weigh
Hold The current investment case still makes sense to you, and you can tolerate the possibility of further losses. Company prospects, quality of available evidence, time horizon, need for the money, and the position’s weight in your portfolio.
Sell or reduce The updated evidence or risk no longer fits your goals, or you need to limit exposure. Whether trading is available, the effect of a partial or full sale on your portfolio, and any applicable taxable-sale consequences.
Add A new purchase independently fits your investment reasoning and does not create unacceptable concentration. Whether you would make the purchase on its merits today, the possibility of further loss, and the effect on your overall portfolio risk.

These are conditional prompts, not predictions or instructions. You do not have to choose between keeping every share and selling every share: reducing a position is also an option if that better matches your risk limits. Whatever you choose, make the case using today’s information rather than treating a return to your entry price as the only acceptable outcome.

Measure the position against what remains

Assess the stock as a share of your current portfolio, not just as a fraction of the money you initially invested. After a large decline, its percentage of the portfolio may be smaller than before, but the relevant question is still whether that exposure is appropriate relative to your other holdings, plans, and capacity for risk. Consider how much additional loss you could withstand and whether you may need the remaining money within your time horizon.

The SEC identifies asset allocation and diversification as strategies for managing investing risk. Diversification does not guarantee against losses, and rebalancing can involve fees or taxes. Investor.gov: Introduction to investing. If you are considering a portfolio adjustment, compare its costs and tax effects as well as its effect on concentration. Investor.gov: Beginner’s guide to asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing.

What if the company is in bankruptcy or the stock is suspended?

Bankruptcy and trading suspensions require separate checks because they can affect what the existing shares represent and whether you can sell them through an ordinary route.

Bankruptcy does not guarantee old shares a recovery

Do not assume that a company reorganization preserves the value of its existing common shares. The SEC says that “Common shareholders frequently are replaced by new shareholders as part of the bankruptcy plan.” Investor.gov: Bankruptcy. If the company is in bankruptcy, look for the plan and related disclosures to understand how it treats existing shares instead of assuming that a reorganization means shareholders will participate in a recovery.

A suspension can limit your choices

If trading is suspended or there is no market for the security, you may not be able to place an ordinary sale at a price shown in an app or on a quote page. Seek current, reliable information and ask your broker what status the shares have and what options, if any, are available. Do not treat the absence of a sell button or a stale quote as proof that the security has a particular value.

A price decline alone does not establish wrongdoing

A falling stock price by itself is not evidence of a securities-law violation. If you have credible evidence of wrongdoing, the SEC describes possible recovery processes, but recovery is uncertain and may be far less than the loss. Investor.gov: Investor guidance. Keep that question distinct from the investment decision: neither a large decline nor an allegation guarantees compensation.

How do U.S. taxes affect a stock loss?

The following applies to U.S. taxable holdings and is based on the Internal Revenue Service’s 2025 Publication 550. Tax treatment depends on the tax year, account type, and circumstances; confirm the rules that apply to your return or consult a qualified tax professional.

A completed sale and an unrealized decline are not the same tax event

A completed sale in a taxable account generally enters capital-gain-and-loss reporting through Form 8949 and Schedule D. Under the IRS’s 2025 Publication 550, the annual deduction limit for a net capital loss is $3,000, or $1,500 for married filing separately; eligible unused losses can be carried forward. The $3,000 figure is a limit on the annual deduction of net capital loss, not a limit on how much loss may offset capital gains. IRS Publication 550 (2025).

Tax consequences can be one factor in comparing a sale with holding, but do not let a possible deduction substitute for deciding whether the investment still fits your needs. A particular sale’s reporting and tax effect depend on the full situation, not solely on the percentage decline.

Check the wash-sale rule before selling at a loss

The IRS’s 2025 guidance identifies purchases of substantially identical stock or securities within 30 days before or after a sale at a loss as relevant to the wash-sale rules. Certain acquisitions in an IRA or Roth IRA can also matter. Selling at a loss and immediately buying the same stock does not guarantee that the loss is immediately deductible. Review Publication 550 and get tax advice if the transaction or account circumstances are unclear.

A 90% decline is not the same as complete worthlessness

A security that falls sharply may still exist and trade; a 90% price decline alone does not make it completely worthless for tax purposes. The IRS says stock that became completely worthless during a tax year is treated as sold on the last day of that year and reported on Form 8949. That rule concerns complete worthlessness, not simply a very low quoted price. IRS Publication 550 (2025).

What is a sensible next step?

Write down the decision you are making and the facts it depends on before placing another trade. That can help distinguish a current, evidence-based choice from a reaction to the loss itself.

  1. Confirm the holding. Verify the ticker, share count, any corporate action, and whether trading is active.
  2. Identify what changed. Review recent company disclosures and note what is known, what remains uncertain, and what explains the decline.
  3. Set your personal constraints. Consider your time horizon, need for the money, tolerance for further loss, and the stock’s share of your remaining portfolio.
  4. Compare the available actions. Assess holding, reducing or selling, and adding as separate decisions using current evidence and your goals.
  5. Check special consequences. If there is bankruptcy, a trading suspension, or a taxable sale, review the relevant company documents, broker information, or tax rules before acting.

If you cannot explain why you would hold or buy the position today without referring to your original purchase price, pause and gather the missing information. If the company facts, tax treatment, or trading status are unusually complex, seek help from a qualified professional rather than treating a general framework as a personal recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an unrealized stock loss count as a tax deduction?

A decline in a taxable account is not by itself a completed sale for capital-loss reporting. A taxable sale generally enters reporting through Form 8949 and Schedule D; account type and the tax year matter.

Can averaging down make a 90% loss easier to recover?

Buying additional shares can lower the average purchase price per share, but it also puts more money at risk in the same company. The lower average cost does not change the company’s prospects or make a price recovery more likely.

Does a stock falling 90% mean the company committed fraud?

No. A price decline alone does not establish securities-law wrongdoing. Any concern about misconduct should be evaluated using credible evidence, separately from the decision about whether the investment still fits your circumstances.
