Choose the SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds if you want a supplied 2.4 GHz dongle for console gaming; choose the Sony WF-1000XM5 if Bluetooth listening features such as multipoint and LDAC matter more. GameBuds buyers should check the console variant: the PlayStation model’s dongle supports PlayStation and PC, while the Xbox model adds an Xbox mode. There is no controlled head-to-head test establishing an overall winner for sound, noise cancellation, microphone quality, or latency.

How do their wireless connections differ?
GameBuds: dongle for gaming, Bluetooth for other devices
SteelSeries positions the GameBuds around 2.4 GHz wireless for gaming alongside Bluetooth 5.3. That supplied dongle is their practical advantage when you want a dedicated wireless link to a supported console or PC, rather than relying on Bluetooth alone. The company also promotes game presets, spatial audio, active noise cancellation, and transparency mode; its PlayStation product page advertises more than 100 PS5 audio presets through its companion app. SteelSeries product details
Choose the variant by the console you need the dongle to serve. The PlayStation version is described by SteelSeries support as a single-mode PlayStation/PC dongle. The Xbox version has an Xbox mode and a second mode for PlayStation/PC. Check compatibility for your exact setup before buying, especially if you expect one pair to move between consoles. Sony: Bluetooth-focused connection
Sony documents Bluetooth 5.3 for the WF-1000XM5, with multipoint and the SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 codecs. The cited Sony specifications do not list a supplied gaming dongle or a comparable gaming-latency figure. If you need a transmitter-based console connection, confirm your console’s Bluetooth support and any required accessories rather than assuming these earbuds will connect like the GameBuds. Sony specifications
What do the battery figures actually mean?
| Model | Manufacturer battery estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds | 10 hours per charge; up to 40 hours with the case | SteelSeries’ footnote says: “Based on 2.4GHz connection with noise control off.” It also advertises 3 hours of play after a 15-minute charge. These are manufacturer figures, not a controlled comparison. SteelSeries product details |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | Up to 8 hours with noise canceling on; up to 12 hours with it off | Sony’s Help Guide says actual charging and usage hours vary with conditions. These are manufacturer estimates, not a controlled comparison. Sony specifications Sony Help Guide |
The figures use different stated conditions, so they do not prove that one model lasts longer in your particular mix of gaming, Bluetooth use, and noise control.

What listening and control features matter?
Sony’s documented strengths include multipoint and LDAC support, alongside AAC, SBC, and LC3. These are relevant if you often connect to more than one Bluetooth device or use a compatible source and want LDAC. GameBuds instead emphasize switching between their gaming dongle and Bluetooth, console-oriented presets, and spatial audio. Neither manufacturer feature list establishes which earbuds sound better to every listener.
Fit and touch controls are personal. SteelSeries includes small, medium, and large tips. TechRadar’s reviewer said they preferred third-party foam tips for fit and found the on-ear controls required more pressure than they liked; those are that reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee of your experience. Confirm replacement-tip compatibility before buying any third-party set. TechRadar gaming-earbud roundup

How do water protection and charging compare?
| Model | Protection and case charging |
|---|---|
| SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds | SteelSeries advertises IP55 protection and Qi case charging. The rating is not a claim that the earbuds can be submerged. SteelSeries product details |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | Sony specifies IPX4-equivalent protection for the earbuds, subject to exclusions for specified openings; the charging case is not water resistant. Sony lists wireless charging with the case. Do not submerge the earbuds or expose the case as though it shared the earbuds’ rating. Sony specifications |
What do they cost?
Prices and availability vary by market, color, retailer, and date. On October 4, 2026, Sony’s US product page showed the Smoky Pink WF-1000XM5 at $279.99, reduced from $329.99, and displayed an email-availability control. That is a dated listing for one color, not a reliable current price for every seller or market. Sony US product page
Is either one a better gaming choice?
For a gaming setup that needs a supplied 2.4 GHz transmitter, the GameBuds are the clearer match, provided you choose the correct console variant. Sony’s documented WF-1000XM5 features make it the more natural fit for Bluetooth listening priorities such as multipoint and LDAC. No controlled, directly comparable latency measurement for these two models is established here, so a measured latency advantage should not be inferred from the connection types alone.
