SteamOS has an official installation and repair workflow, and SteamOS 3.8.10 expanded compatibility for some AMD and Intel platforms. But the available evidence does not show a Valve installer that installs Windows or currently sets up a Windows/SteamOS dual boot: a June 23, 2026 report says the SteamOS installer can wipe and replace an existing operating system but cannot yet partition a drive for dual boot.

What the SteamOS installer does—and what it does not do

Valve provides an official SteamOS installation and repair workflow. That is an installer for SteamOS, not a Windows installer. If you want Windows on Steam hardware, you use Windows installation media and then install the appropriate device drivers.

Valve’s March 10, 2022 Steam News announcement said that Steam Deck could dual boot, but its SteamOS installer did not yet include the dual-boot wizard; at that point, installing Windows meant performing a full Windows installation. A later report, dated June 23, 2026, said the SteamOS installer still could not partition a drive for dual boot and that an install could wipe and replace the existing operating system. Treat that newer status as the practical limitation: do not assume the official installer will preserve Windows or create a dual-boot setup.

What you want to do What the cited sources establish Practical implication
Install or repair SteamOS Valve maintains an official SteamOS installation and repair workflow. Follow Valve’s SteamOS instructions and be prepared for an install that replaces the existing OS.
Install Windows on Steam hardware Valve’s Windows resources provide drivers for listed Steam hardware; Valve’s 2022 announcement described a full Windows install path. Use Windows installation media, then obtain drivers for the exact device from Valve’s Windows resources.
Keep Windows and add SteamOS through Valve’s installer A June 23, 2026 report says the installer cannot yet partition a drive for dual boot. Do not count on an official installer-created dual-boot layout; back up first and wait for a confirmed updated capability if you need that workflow.

Can you dual boot SteamOS and Windows?

Not through a Valve dual-boot wizard established by the cited 2026 reporting. The distinction matters: Valve said in 2022 that Steam Deck was capable of dual boot, but also said its SteamOS installer’s dual-boot wizard was not ready. The June 23, 2026 report still described drive partitioning for dual boot as unavailable in the installer and framed it as future work.

Hardware capability is not the same as a supported, ready-to-use installation process. If preserving your Windows installation is essential, do not start a SteamOS installation on that drive unless you have a backup and are prepared for the possibility that the existing OS will be erased. A separate drive can keep the operating systems physically separate, but it does not turn the SteamOS installer into an official dual-boot tool.

What AMD and Intel GPU support means for SteamOS

SteamOS 3.8.10 was reported on June 23, 2026 to include compatibility updates for AMD and Intel platforms, including upcoming Intel-powered handhelds. That is evidence of expanding support, not a guarantee that every AMD or Intel graphics model works, or works equally well.

Valve’s OEM guidance says graphics-driver releases are integrated from hardware vendors and that vendors are responsible for providing Linux support for the hardware and features they want included. As a result, compatibility depends on the exact GPU or APU, its Linux driver support, and the relevant SteamOS release. Check the model-specific release information and vendor Linux support before installing on a non-Steam Deck device; a broad label such as “Intel GPU” or “AMD GPU” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Windows drivers for Steam hardware

Valve’s Steam Hardware Windows Resources page was reported in July 2026 to list APU/graphics, SD-card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and audio drivers for Steam Deck LCD, Steam Deck OLED, and Steam Machine. The driver list is hardware-specific; confirm that a download is intended for your model rather than assuming one package applies to every Steam device.

Valve’s Windows announcement in 2022 listed GPU, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth drivers and said audio drivers were still being developed at the time. The later July 2026 report lists audio among the resources available for the named hardware. Valve also states: “We are providing these resources as is and are unfortunately unable to offer ‘Windows on Steam Hardware’ support.” Windows users should therefore keep recovery media available and be prepared to troubleshoot Windows, drivers, and device behavior without Valve support.

Before changing operating systems

  • Back up Windows, personal files, and any data on the target drive before installing or changing partitions.
  • Prepare a bootable USB flash drive with the required Windows installer or SteamOS recovery image, as appropriate.
  • Confirm the exact AMD or Intel GPU/APU model against current SteamOS release information and vendor Linux-driver support.
  • If installing Windows, download the driver packages for your particular Steam hardware from Valve’s official Windows resources.
  • Keep recovery media accessible, especially if you plan to alter the drive that currently holds Windows.

If you need Windows-only anti-cheat games or other Windows software, installing Windows may be the relevant route, but it means using Windows installation media and device-specific drivers—not a Windows installer bundled into SteamOS. If you mainly want SteamOS, use Valve’s installation and repair workflow only after accounting for its reported wipe-and-replace behavior.
