Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta, released October 16, 2026, fixes a specific performance problem in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer: slowdown that occurred when a Steam Machine resumed from suspend. The update is available through SteamOS Beta and Preview channels. Valve has not published an FPS increase, frame-time result, percentage improvement, or benchmark, and its note does not confirm that the same fix applies to Steam Deck.
What does SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta fix in Galactic Racer?
The change targets performance degradation after a Steam Machine wakes from suspend. Valve’s exact changelog wording is: “Fixed performance issues in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on resume from suspend on Steam Machine.” That describes a resume-state fix, not a general optimization for every launch, graphics setting, or hardware configuration.

The distinction matters because a game that runs poorly after waking may perform normally after a cold launch. SteamOS 3.9.3 addresses the former condition on the hardware named in the note.

There is no published numerical gain. Valve provides no frame-rate, frame-time, percentage, or benchmark data, so it is not possible to claim that the patch adds a specific number of frames per second. Users should treat the change as a correction to post-suspend performance rather than a measured FPS upgrade.

Is the Galactic Racer fix available on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck support is unconfirmed. Valve’s changelog explicitly says “Steam Machine,” and does not say Steam Deck. SteamDB lists the game as a Windows PC title released October 6, 2026, with SteamOS and Steam Machine compatibility metadata; it also records a Steam Machine performance test dated October 15, 2026. Those records provide context for the timing but do not establish that Steam Deck resumes receive the same fix.
How do I install SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta?
You must opt into a pre-release update channel. The setting is available on the device running SteamOS:

What else changed in SteamOS 3.9.3?
The Galactic Racer correction is only one item in the release. The other changes are:

- The galaxy is yours with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Play all nine saga films and experience fun filled adventure in a galaxy far, far away
- Play through all nine films in a new, fun filled adventure
- The Crew Motorfest: fixed an issue that could lead to GPU errors.
- Multi-monitor audio: corrected audio problems that could occur when certain monitors are hot-plugged in a multi-monitor setup.
- Steam Frame: improved support for the Steam Frame wireless adapter.
- System: included security and stability updates.
- Developer support: reintroduced Android binder IPC support.
These fixes address separate operating-system, hardware, and developer-facing issues. They should not be interpreted as additional changes to Galactic Racer’s rendering performance.
How is this different from the game’s own updates?
SteamOS 3.9.3 is an operating-system update. The game’s official feed separately lists launch-period hotfixes and a quality-of-life update. Those game-side changes include DLSS stability work, a revised minimum graphics-driver requirement, keyboard-layout presets, an increase in online party size from three to six, party-stability fixes, a PlayStation 5 connection fix, and a fix for an AMD Frame Interpolation crash.

Because the two update streams solve different problems, installing the operating-system beta does not replace updating the game itself. Keep the game current when troubleshooting launch, driver, party, or interpolation problems.

What should players check after installing the beta?
To verify the specific fix, reproduce the condition it addresses rather than judging a cold launch:

- SURVIVE A DANGEROUS UNDERGROUND SPORT - Join The Galactic League - an unsanctioned racing circuit born in the lawless Outer Rim. Become Shade, a lone racer chasing revenge and glory.

- CLIMB THE RANKS AND EARN REWARDS - Prove yourself through intense rivalries and escalating challenges. Every choice shapes your prospects as you build your status in The Galactic League.
- Start the game on a Steam Machine running SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta or Preview.
- Play long enough to establish normal behavior, then suspend the system.
- Resume and check for the slowdown or instability you previously saw.
- If the problem remains, record whether it occurs only after suspend, after a cold launch, or under a particular display or graphics configuration.
Without a before-and-after benchmark, a subjective improvement cannot be converted into a percentage. If problems continue, switching back to the stable channel is the practical recovery option while waiting for further Valve guidance.

SteamDB identifies Fuse Games as the developer and Secret Mode as the publisher. The official game feed also describes a photo-mode competition whose prize is a Collector’s Edition package containing a metal Kor Sarun: Darc X landspeeder model, pilot patches, a family banner, and a 73-page artbook. That description establishes a competition prize, not proof that the package is a generally available retail edition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get the SteamOS 3.9.3 fix without joining a beta channel?
Not from the release described here. Valve distributed SteamOS 3.9.3 through the Beta and Preview channels and did not announce a stable-channel date in the notes.
Will a cold reboot test show whether this patch worked?
A cold reboot does not test the condition named in the changelog. Suspend the Steam Machine, resume it, and compare behavior before and after that transition.
What if Galactic Racer still slows down after resume?
Check that both SteamOS and the game are fully updated, then note whether the slowdown appears only after suspend. You can return to the stable SteamOS channel if the beta causes unacceptable instability.
Does the update fix every Galactic Racer graphics problem?
No. The documented change is limited to performance issues after resume from suspend on Steam Machine. Other issues, such as DLSS stability or an AMD Frame Interpolation crash, are covered by separate game updates.
