Steam is the stronger fit if you value its community features, Workshop support, reviews, recommendations, and family controls. Epic is appealing if you claim its free games, use Epic Rewards, or find a better deal on a particular title. For a game available on both, compare the exact edition, price, refund eligibility, and game-specific features before buying.

What Steam does better
Steam foregrounds community features including discussions, user reviews, recommendations, achievements, controller support, and Steam Workshop. Workshop can make finding and managing supported community content more convenient, but it does not mean every Steam game supports mods or Workshop. Check the title’s store page and publisher notes. Steam Families for shared households
Steam Families can include up to six members and provides game-access management, restrictions, playtime limits and reports, and child account recovery, according to Valve’s Steam Families guide. Whether a particular game can be shared depends on current rules and the game’s eligibility, so check the guide and the household library before relying on access.
What the Epic Games Store does better
Free games that stay in your library
Epic’s FAQ says a claimed free game stays in your library after it is no longer offered free to new customers. That makes it worth checking the store’s current giveaway schedule if you are willing to maintain a second library. The offer itself changes, and a game must be claimed during its promotion. Epic Rewards and title-specific offers
Epic also describes Epic Rewards in its FAQ. Eligibility and terms apply, so check the current program terms rather than assuming a purchase earns rewards. A particular game may also be cheaper on Epic during a sale, but no store is consistently cheaper across all titles, regions, or editions.
Check the game, not just the launcher
Store-level features do not guarantee that an individual game uses them. For the exact title and edition, check the listing and publisher information for:

- Multiplayer support, cross-play, and any account or launcher requirements.
- Controller support and mod compatibility.
- Included DLC, edition differences, and whether add-ons transfer between versions.
Epic’s store catalog exposes game-level attributes such as cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, and controller support. Steam highlights platform features such as Workshop and community tools, but game support varies there too.
Refund policies: similar baseline, different eligibility details
For qualifying Steam purchases, Valve’s standard policy is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of play. Valve says players can still submit requests outside those conditions for review; approval is not automatic. Read Steam’s refund instructions and check the purchase in your account.

For PC and Mac purchases, Epic’s baseline is also 14 days and less than two hours of runtime, but the product must be labeled “refundable” or “self-refundable.” Self-refundable products can be refunded through account transactions; a product marked refundable may require contacting Player Support. Pre-purchases use a 14-day period after release. Subscriptions, in-app purchases, in-game items, consumables, virtual currency, and gifts generally have different or non-refundable treatment under the policy, subject to applicable law. Epic notes EU statutory withdrawal rights and says it cannot refund purchases made outside Epic checkout. Check the exact product label and Epic’s refund policy before buying.
These are policy baselines, not unconditional guarantees. Purchase type, playtime, timing, displayed eligibility, region, and applicable legal rights can affect the outcome.

Do developer revenue shares affect your price?
Not directly. A developer’s store revenue split is not a reliable way to predict the price you will pay. Epic says that starting in 2026, its first $1 million in net revenue per title resets annually, after which its standard 88/12 revenue split applies. Those are developer terms, not a consumer price promise; compare the live checkout prices and editions instead. See Epic’s developer revenue-share terms.
How to choose where to buy a specific game
- Find the exact edition. Make sure both listings include the same base game, DLC, and bonuses.
- Compare the final checkout price. Account for discounts, regional pricing, taxes, and any applicable rewards.
- Check features you will use. Verify cloud saves, multiplayer, achievements, controller support, and mods on the game’s listing and publisher information.
- Read the refund eligibility shown for that purchase. Steam and Epic have different details, and Epic requires an eligible refund label for PC and Mac products.
- Factor in your household and library. Steam Families may matter for shared access; Epic’s giveaways may make keeping both libraries worthwhile.
Which store should you choose?
Choose Steam if its community, Workshop, reviews, recommendations, or Steam Families features matter most to you. Choose Epic when its free games, Rewards, or current offer better suit your needs. If a specific game is sold on both, decide on that purchase using its edition, checkout price, refund eligibility, and supported features—not a blanket claim that one store is always better.
