Choose Steam Remote Play for the simplest route from a PC running Steam to another screen; consider Moonlight with Sunshine if you want a separately configured streaming setup and broader host-GPU support. Neither option is established as universally faster or sharper: the result depends on your hardware and network, so test both if latency or image quality is decisive.
How Steam Remote Play and Moonlight differ
Steam Remote Play streams video and audio from a computer running Steam to a client, which returns your controller or other input to the PC. Valve’s Steam Link app and hardware provide the client side of that workflow. It is designed around Steam, although Valve says Steam Link hardware can stream virtually any game the host computer runs. Valve’s Steam Link hardware guide and Steam Remote Play describe the supported setup and streaming flow.
Moonlight is a streaming client, not the host software. The Moonlight project’s current setup guide recommends installing Sunshine on the gaming PC, then pairing Moonlight on the device you will play on. Sunshine is the documented host option for modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs; its operating-system and hardware requirements can change, so check the Moonlight project’s setup guide for your specific host. The project also publishes a Moonlight FAQ covering client platforms and compatibility.
Moonlight previously supported NVIDIA GameStream hosts, but Sunshine is the setup path recommended in the current guide. Do not confuse Moonlight, the client, with Sunshine, the host.

| Decision | Steam Remote Play | Moonlight with Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install Steam Link on a supported client and connect to a computer running Steam. | Install and configure Sunshine on the host, install Moonlight on the client, and pair them. The guide recommends pairing on the home network first. |
| Game selection | Most straightforward for a Steam library. Valve also says Steam Link hardware can stream virtually any game the host PC runs. | Sunshine can expose games and apps; the Moonlight guide explains how to add an app manually if it is not detected automatically. |
| Host hardware | A computer running Steam; results depend on the PC and its encoding support. | The current Sunshine guide lists modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs. Check that guide for OS and version requirements. |
| Client devices | Valve lists phones, tablets, TVs, desktop systems, Raspberry Pi, and compatible VR headsets. Availability depends on the device. | The Moonlight project lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Android, Amazon Fire devices, iOS, Apple TV, and ChromeOS clients. Choose based on your situation
Pick Steam Remote Play for a Steam-centered setup
Start with Steam Remote Play if your games are already in Steam, you want the integrated Steam Link workflow, and your intended client is supported. It is the simpler first option because the documented path is connecting a Steam Link client to a PC running Steam.
Consider Moonlight with Sunshine for a configurable host
Consider Moonlight if you are comfortable setting up a separate host and client and want to use Sunshine’s documented support for modern GPUs from AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel. Before installing, verify that the host’s operating system, GPU, and your client device meet the project’s current requirements.

Test both when performance is the deciding factor
The cited Valve and Moonlight documentation does not provide a controlled, current head-to-head test showing that one option always has lower latency or better image quality. Try each on your own host, client, and network instead of choosing based on a universal performance claim.
Set up the network and connection
For Steam Link
Valve recommends wired networking in relevant Steam Link setups. Its suggested network settings explain connection requirements and troubleshooting. Disable access point or client isolation if it prevents devices from seeing each other. Public, workplace, school, guest, captive-portal, or login-gated networks may block Remote Play; Valve also lists ports to check when troubleshooting.

For Steam Link hardware, Valve lists a 720p or 1080p display requirement. That detail applies to the hardware guide and should not be read as a universal resolution limit for every Steam Link app.
For Moonlight with Sunshine
Pair Moonlight and Sunshine over your home network before attempting to stream over the internet. The setup guide’s Sunshine requirements are version-sensitive: it lists Windows 10 or 11, macOS 12 or newer as experimental, and specified Linux distributions and versions. Use the live setup guide to check exact requirements rather than treating these as permanent compatibility rules.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
For either option
If Wi-Fi instability is a problem, connecting the host PC to the router by Ethernet is a reasonable improvement to try. It cannot guarantee low latency: client Wi-Fi, router congestion, video encoding and decoding, and the route across the internet can all affect the stream. A compatible controller is useful for couch or mobile play, but it is not mandatory for every client or game.

First confirm that streaming works on your home network. For a connection from elsewhere, check the host, client, router, firewall, and network path. Steam’s network guidance notes that managed networks, client isolation, captive portals, and login-gated access can prevent connections. Moonlight’s setup instructions likewise recommend establishing local pairing before trying internet streaming; a successful home setup alone does not guarantee remote access.
