Valve is pricing the Steam Machine as a compact gaming PC, not as a console: its stated target is a PC built from parts with roughly comparable performance. In the US, the announced prices are $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB, with sales scheduled to begin June 29, 2026. Those prices make the PC comparison more relevant than a console-price match, even though the Steam Machine adds living-room conveniences.

What the announced prices include

Ars Technica reported Valve’s US launch configurations at $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB, with an optional Steam Controller bundle add-on for $79. Sales are scheduled to start June 29, 2026. The base prices are before any applicable taxes or shipping. Price and availability can change.

Valve had previously aimed for a lower price, but component shortages and higher memory and storage costs made that target “no longer viable,” according to Ars Technica’s report of the announcement. The two storage configurations are not interchangeable value propositions: the 2TB model costs $300 more, which may matter if you expect to keep several large games installed at once.

Why Valve says to compare it with a PC

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais described the target as the price window for building a PC from parts that reaches “basically the same level of performance,” as reported by GameDeveloper on November 25, 2025. Griffais also characterized the pricing as “more in line with what you might expect from the current PC market,” according to Tom’s Hardware on November 23, 2025.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

That is a pricing strategy, not proof that every buyer will find the Steam Machine cheaper than a self-built system. A fair comparison should match approximate gaming performance and include the form factor and setup you actually want. A compact prebuilt or mini gaming PC may be a closer reference than a conventional desktop tower; comparing only a bare component list can omit the value of assembly, compact housing, quiet cooling, and living-room integration.

What you are paying for beyond game performance

The announced hardware combines a custom six-core AMD Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units and 8GB of dedicated VRAM, 16GB of system DDR5 memory, and Linux-based SteamOS. Valve positions the system for 4K TVs using upscaling, but its engineers have described 1080p or 1440p rendering as the likely sweet spot for newer, demanding games. Older or lighter games may run at native 4K. Actual performance varies with the game, settings, render resolution, upscaling mode, and future software demands; there is no single frame rate that applies to every title.

The rest of the value is about using a PC-game library from the sofa. The small enclosure, quiet operation, HDMI-CEC, SteamOS, and wireless controller integration can reduce the work involved in setting up a living-room gaming PC. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat told Tom’s Hardware in 2026 that the Steam Machine’s value is “inherently tied” to the value of a buyer’s Steam library. If you already own games on Steam, you can weigh that library against the cost of switching ecosystems; a new buyer should consider game availability and storefront preferences as well as the hardware price.

How the comparison differs from console shopping

Console prices can make the Steam Machine look expensive if the only question is the purchase price of the box. For context, GameDeveloper reported these contemporary US prices in 2025; they are time-sensitive and may no longer reflect current offers:

Console Reported US price
PS5 $549.99
PS5 Digital Edition $499.99
PS5 Pro $749
Xbox Series S $400
Xbox Series X $650

Those are not like-for-like performance or ownership comparisons, and console prices should be checked again before purchase. A full cost comparison also depends on software: consider whether you already own the games you want, which storefronts you use, multiplayer policies, and any subscription costs. The Steam Machine’s higher upfront price may be easier to justify for someone bringing a substantial Steam library than for someone starting from zero.

Who is most likely to find the price worthwhile?

Existing Steam players seeking a TV setup

The clearest fit is a PC gamer who owns a sizable Steam library and wants a quiet, compact living-room device without assembling or tuning a mini-ITX PC. For that buyer, convenience and access to owned games are part of the value, not just the components.

People returning to PC gaming

The Steam Machine may appeal to someone who wants a simpler route back to PC games and prefers a dedicated TV device. Before buying, check that the games and services you care about work the way you expect on SteamOS.

First-time PC buyers and upgrade-focused players

If you are starting with no Steam library, compare the Steam Machine with a similarly performing prebuilt compact gaming PC and account for the cost of building a library. A conventional desktop may be a better fit if future upgrades are a priority: the compact integrated design is generally less flexible, and its final serviceability details should be verified before treating any particular component as replaceable.

A practical way to judge the price

  1. Choose a configuration. Compare the $1,049 512GB and $1,349 2TB US launch models based on how much installed-game storage you need.
  2. Set a fair PC benchmark. Compare with a compact gaming PC or prebuilt that offers roughly similar gaming performance, rather than a much larger desktop with different upgrade potential.
  3. Account for the living-room setup. Decide how much value you place on the small enclosure, quiet operation, SteamOS, HDMI-CEC, and controller integration; include the optional $79 Steam Controller bundle only if you want it.
  4. Include your software costs and ownership. Factor in your existing Steam library, the games you would need to buy, storefront preferences, multiplayer policies, and subscription costs.
  5. Check current terms before ordering. Confirm price, availability, taxes, shipping, and any reservation or serviceability details with Valve, since launch information and policies can change.
