To check whether a Steam game runs on Linux, Steam Deck, or macOS, open the exact game’s Steam Store page and read its System Requirements. That tells you which operating systems have a listed build and what hardware the listing requires. For Steam Deck, also check the game’s official compatibility badge and details. If Linux is not listed, the game may still run through Proton, so check recent ProtonDB reports—but treat them as community evidence, not a guarantee for your setup.

What does the Steam Store page tell you?

The Store page is the best starting point for confirming which operating systems the game officially lists and what hardware it calls for. Open the page for the exact game, edition, or version you intend to play; a search result or a similarly named release may not describe the same product.

Scroll to System Requirements and note the operating-system entries, minimum and recommended hardware, and storage requirement. Steam Support advises checking operating-system compatibility alongside hardware requirements. A listed operating system answers whether the Store listing provides that platform as a supported option; it does not, on its own, establish how smoothly the game will run on your particular computer.

  • Operating system: Look for Windows, macOS, or SteamOS + Linux.
  • Hardware: Compare the listed CPU, graphics hardware, and memory with the target device.
  • Storage: Check that the required space is available.
  • Other conditions: Note any listing details about controllers, launchers, online access, or anti-cheat.
  • Edition: Confirm that the requirements belong to the edition you plan to install.

Use the requirements as a first-pass compatibility check, not a promise of a particular frame rate or a flawless experience. The listing and Valve’s Deck badge answer different questions, and a game’s ability to launch does not necessarily mean every feature works.

Minimum versus recommended requirements

Read the minimum and recommended columns as separate thresholds. A computer that meets only the minimum may be able to start the game while requiring lower settings or accepting slower performance; the Store page does not promise a frame rate for either column. Recommended requirements are a stronger indication of the hardware the publisher expects for a better experience, but they still do not account for every driver, operating-system, controller, or display combination.

Check the storage figure against free space, not just the capacity printed on the drive. Leave room for the operating system, updates, shader caches, and other games. If a listing has separate requirements for different systems, use the requirements for the platform you will actually install rather than copying the Windows figures to a Mac or Linux machine.

How can you tell whether a Steam game supports macOS?

Look for macOS in the individual game’s System Requirements. The Steam Store also offers a Mac OS X operating-system filter to narrow search results, but that filter is a discovery aid; open the game page and verify its requirements before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the Mac build and its requirements

Confirm that the listing explicitly includes macOS, then read the Mac-specific requirements. Pay attention to the required macOS version, processor, and graphics hardware. A Windows or Linux entry does not imply that a Mac build exists, even when the game is available on Steam.

Also compare the requirements with the particular Mac you plan to use. “Mac” is not a single hardware configuration: processor generation and graphics capability matter, as do the operating-system requirements stated on the listing. If the game’s Mac requirements do not cover your model or macOS version clearly, the Store page alone may not settle whether your setup is suitable.

Do not treat ownership of the Steam version as proof that the Mac version is included. Some listings provide separate platform builds, and an update can change the stated version or requirements. Recheck the page when you are deciding whether to buy or install, especially after a major macOS or game update.

How do you check if a Steam game works on Steam Deck?

Read the game’s official Steam Deck compatibility badge on its Store page or in your Steam library, then open the compatibility details. Valve’s rating is about the Deck experience—not a universal verdict for every Linux computer or Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve considers input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Those criteria include controller support and input icons, on-screen keyboard behavior, readability at the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display resolutions, launcher usability, compatibility warnings, Proton, and anti-cheat support when the game runs through Proton.

Steam Deck status What Valve’s label means How to use it
Verified Valve says the game works great on Steam Deck out of the box. A strong official starting signal for a plug-and-play Deck experience. Check the details if a particular feature matters to you.
Playable The game works, but may require manual configuration. Read the compatibility notes for possible launcher interaction, manual settings, touchscreen use, or controller adjustments.
Unsupported Valve’s current review does not consider the game playable on Steam Deck. Treat it as a warning against relying on the game as a dependable Deck purchase. The label does not prove that no user can ever launch it.
Unknown Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. Do not read the lack of a rating as either a positive or negative compatibility result.

If the status is Playable or Unsupported, Steam Support says the Store page’s Steam Deck Compatibility section can show which Verified requirements are not currently met. Read that explanation rather than relying on the badge alone: it can distinguish an input or display issue from a broader system-support concern.

What a badge does and does not cover

Verified is an important convenience signal, not a performance test. It does not promise a particular frame rate, battery life, graphics preset, or result on a desktop Linux PC. Playable can still be a good choice when you are comfortable changing a setting or using the touchscreen, while Unknown simply means Valve has not completed its check. Unsupported is a reason to investigate carefully, not evidence that every user will fail to launch the title.

Valve’s assessment can also change. A game update, a new Proton release, an altered launcher, or a change in anti-cheat support can improve or worsen the practical result. Look at the current badge and details, and use dated community reports to see whether older experiences still match the present build.

What is the difference between native Linux support and Proton?

Native Linux support means the Store listing includes a SteamOS + Linux build. Proton compatibility means a Windows game may run on Linux or SteamOS through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, which runs the Windows executable and game data in that environment. Therefore, a Windows-only Store listing does not automatically mean the game cannot run on Linux or Steam Deck.

Keep three questions separate when checking a game:

  1. Is there a native Linux build? Look for SteamOS + Linux in the Store page’s System Requirements.
  2. Can the Windows version run through Proton? Check the Deck status and community reports for the title.
  3. Will it work well on this device, including the features you need? Consider hardware, controls, display, launcher, anti-cheat, multiplayer, and performance—not just whether the game starts.

Ubuntu’s official Steam documentation describes Proton as a compatibility-layer route for supported Windows titles and notes that ProtonDB can help identify whether a game has a native build or community compatibility information. Proton is not the same thing as a native Linux release, and neither a Deck badge nor a community report establishes compatibility with every Linux distribution and hardware combination.

How to select a Proton version

If Steam does not select a working tool automatically, Steam Support documents a per-game override: open Library, select the game, choose Properties, open Compatibility, and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Choose a version mentioned in current reports for that title, then retest after updates. A forced version is a troubleshooting step, not proof that the game is officially supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a note of any launch option, environment change, or Proton version that makes the game work. That record helps you reproduce the setup after reinstalling Steam or changing distributions. Remove an old workaround if a newer Proton version resolves the issue; stale launch options can create problems of their own.

What should you check on ProtonDB?

When the Store page does not list a native Linux build, use the game’s ProtonDB page as a secondary source. ProtonDB is a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck compatibility reports. Reports can offer practical clues about whether a game launches, which Proton versions people report using, and whether they needed fixes or launch options.

Read reports for the problems that would affect your use of the game, rather than treating one successful launch as a complete compatibility verdict. Look for comments about launchers, video playback, multiplayer, or anti-cheat, and note the Proton version or setup details attached to the report. A report reflects a particular user’s configuration and the game version at the time it was written; it cannot guarantee the same result on your distribution, drivers, hardware, Proton version, or after a game update.

  • Check recency: A report may describe an older game or Proton version.
  • Look for repeated patterns: Multiple reports mentioning the same issue can be more useful than an isolated success or failure.
  • Separate launch from features: A report that the game starts does not necessarily mean online play, anti-cheat, or every mode works.
  • Compare setups: Give more weight to reports that explain relevant versions or configuration details similar to yours.
  • Read the whole report: A headline or rating can hide a caveat about a launcher, cutscene, controller, or multiplayer mode.

Use ProtonDB to add context to Valve’s official information, not to replace it. The badge is Valve’s Deck assessment; ProtonDB reports are community observations that can be helpful where the official listing does not answer the practical question.

Why can a game launch but still not be fully compatible?

Launching is only one part of compatibility. A game can open and still have problems with multiplayer, anti-cheat, a separate launcher, DRM, video playback, controls, display readability, or performance. For that reason, state the outcome you care about precisely: launching, playing single-player, or playing online with the features you expect.

Anti-cheat and online play

Valve’s Deck criteria include anti-cheat support when a game runs through Proton. A title may therefore appear to start while a multiplayer mode or important online feature remains unavailable. Check the Deck compatibility details and recent ProtonDB reports for evidence about the specific modes you plan to use. If the report discusses only the campaign, do not assume competitive or cooperative servers will work.

Launchers and controls

A separate launcher can add steps or create usability issues, especially on a handheld. Valve’s review considers launcher usability, controller support, correct input icons, and on-screen keyboard behavior. A Playable rating may indicate that a manual adjustment or interaction is needed; the detail panel is the place to find which requirement is affected.

Display and performance

Deck compatibility includes whether text and interface elements are readable at the device’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display resolutions. Performance on a different computer depends on the actual hardware and configuration. Compare the Store’s CPU, graphics, memory, and storage requirements with your system, and do not treat a compatibility label as a benchmark or frame-rate promise.

How should you compare two ways to play the same game?

When both a native Linux build and a Windows build through Proton are available, compare more than whether each one launches. Native support avoids a compatibility layer, but it may be an older build or have different launcher, controller, or multiplayer behavior. Proton may provide the newer Windows release, yet depend on a particular tool version or workaround. Check current reports for both paths and choose the one that supports the modes and peripherals you actually use.

When comparing a desktop Linux installation with a Steam Deck, remember that the Deck badge describes Valve’s hardware, display, controls, and SteamOS environment. A desktop may have a faster or slower GPU, a different controller, another display resolution, and different drivers. Conversely, a game that is convenient on a desktop may require touchscreen or keyboard interaction on the Deck. Compare the actual setup rather than transferring one result to another.

For macOS, make the processor generation and macOS version explicit in the comparison. A Mac listing confirms that a Mac build exists, while a Linux listing or Deck rating says nothing about that build. Keep each platform’s requirements in its own column when making a purchase decision.

What is the safest checking workflow before you rely on a result?

Use official listing information first, then add platform-specific evidence. This workflow helps avoid common mistakes such as assuming a Windows release includes a Mac build, treating an Unknown Deck badge as a pass, or equating a successful launch with complete multiplayer support.

  1. Open the exact game’s Store page. Verify the edition or version, then find System Requirements.
  2. Record the listed operating systems and hardware. Note CPU, graphics, memory, storage, and relevant platform-specific requirements.
  3. For macOS, check the Mac-specific entry. Confirm the required macOS version and processor or graphics requirements. Use the Mac OS X filter only to find candidates, not as final confirmation.
  4. For Steam Deck, read both the badge and its detail panel. Use the label as a quick guide and the explanation to identify the unmet requirement or expected adjustment.
  5. For a Windows-only game on Linux, check Proton evidence. Review the Deck status and recent ProtonDB reports, paying attention to the Proton version, launch options, and issues relevant to your intended mode.
  6. Compare the evidence with your actual setup. Account for your hardware, Linux distribution, drivers, Proton or SteamOS version, Mac model, controller, and any launcher or anti-cheat dependency.
  7. Qualify your conclusion. Say what the official listing states, what Valve rates, or what recent community reports indicate. Avoid turning one platform’s result into a guarantee for another.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking only the search filter: The Mac OS X filter helps locate games but does not replace the individual requirements page.
  • Assuming Windows-only means impossible on Linux: Proton may run the Windows version, but verify the title-specific evidence.
  • Assuming Proton means native support: A compatibility-layer installation is different from a SteamOS + Linux build.
  • Reading Verified as a benchmark: Valve assesses usability and support criteria, not a guaranteed frame rate.
  • Ignoring the detail panel: Playable or Unsupported notes identify the specific requirement that needs attention.
  • Using an old report as current proof: Game, Proton, driver, and anti-cheat updates can change results.
  • Confusing launch with complete play: Test or verify the exact single-player, multiplayer, launcher, and controller features you need.

How should you interpret conflicting or incomplete compatibility information?

Start by identifying what each source is actually answering. The Store requirements describe listed operating systems and hardware; Valve’s compatibility badge evaluates the Steam Deck experience; ProtonDB provides community reports about Linux and Deck configurations. These signals can differ without being contradictory because they cover different platforms, setups, and aspects of play.

If the Store page lists Windows only but ProtonDB reports successful Linux play, the sensible conclusion is that a native Linux build is not listed, while community reports indicate that some users have run the Windows version through Proton. It is not accurate to recast that as an official native Linux release or a guarantee for your machine.

If the Deck badge is Unknown, the information gap is specifically that Valve has not checked the title for compatibility. If it is Unsupported, Valve’s current review does not consider it playable; that is a stronger caution than Unknown, but still not proof that every attempt will fail. If community reports appear more favorable than the badge, assess their dates, configurations, and feature coverage before relying on them.

Compatibility can change with game updates and with changes to Linux distributions, kernels, graphics drivers, desktop environments, Proton versions, SteamOS versions, and Mac hardware or software. The most responsible answer is therefore evidence-specific: identify the platform, source, and status you checked, and distinguish a reported launch from complete support.

Which result should you trust for your platform?

For listed operating systems and hardware requirements, use the exact Steam Store page. For the expected Steam Deck experience, use Valve’s badge and its compatibility details. For a Windows game that might work on Linux through Proton, use ProtonDB as additional, time-sensitive community evidence.

No single signal answers every question. Native support, Proton launchability, a Deck rating, and full feature support are different claims; check the one that matches how and where you intend to play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam Deck Verified guarantee a specific frame rate?

No. Valve’s rating covers compatibility criteria such as input, display, seamlessness, and system support; the label is not a frame-rate benchmark or performance guarantee.

Does a Steam Deck rating apply to every Linux PC?

No. The badge assesses the Deck experience. Linux desktop results can differ with the distribution, drivers, hardware, and Proton configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a ProtonDB success report mean anti-cheat works?

Not necessarily. Check whether the report addresses the online mode and anti-cheat behavior you need; a report that the game launches is not evidence that every feature works.

Can a Windows-only Steam game run on Linux?

Often it can run through Proton, but that is not the same as native Linux support. Check the game’s Deck status and recent ProtonDB reports for launch options, Proton versions, and feature limitations.

How do I force a Proton version for one game?

In Steam, open Library, select the game, choose Properties, open Compatibility, and enable “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.” Use a version supported by current reports, then retest after updates.

Is an Unsupported Steam Deck game guaranteed not to launch?

No. Unsupported means Valve’s current review does not consider it playable on Deck. Some users may launch it, but the label is a warning not to rely on it without checking detailed, recent evidence.

What does an Unknown Steam Deck badge mean?

It means Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. It is neither an approval nor a failure result, so look for other evidence before buying for a Deck.

Does a Mac OS X search result prove a Mac version will work?

No. Open the individual Store page and verify the macOS version, processor, graphics, and other Mac-specific requirements against your model.

What should I do if a game launches but multiplayer fails?

Treat launchability and full compatibility as separate results. Check anti-cheat, launcher, and online-mode notes in the Deck details and recent ProtonDB reports, then state clearly which modes work.

Can a Steam Deck Verified game work badly on a desktop Linux PC?

Yes. Verified evaluates the Deck’s hardware, controls, display, and SteamOS environment. Desktop Linux distributions, drivers, hardware, controllers, and Proton settings can produce different results.

The Bottom Line

Start with the exact Steam Store page: confirm the listed operating system and compare CPU, graphics, memory, and storage requirements. For macOS, verify the Mac-specific version and hardware details. For Steam Deck, read Valve’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown badge and its explanation. If Linux is not listed, investigate Proton and recent ProtonDB reports, then distinguish a successful launch from complete support for controllers, launchers, anti-cheat, multiplayer, display, and performance.
