To keep an Epic Games Store giveaway, claim it before the deadline shown on the offer; you do not have to download or install it before the offer ends. Epic says a claimed promotion game remains in your library permanently. On Steam, “free” can mean an ongoing free-to-play game, a temporary Free Weekend, or a limited-time Free to Keep promotion—so check the offer type rather than assuming every free game is permanent.
Free to play, free to keep, and free for a weekend are different
“Free game” can describe different access arrangements. A game that costs nothing to acquire permanently is not the same as a temporary trial, and neither is necessarily the same as a free-to-play game with optional purchases.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation distinguishes Free to Play, Free Weekends, and Free to Keep promotions. Steam’s free-to-play guidance says these games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, while noting that players may need Steam Wallet funds to buy in-game items or content and that individual games can impose account restrictions. Do you have to download an Epic giveaway before it ends?
No. Epic’s stated requirement is to claim the game within the promotion period so it is added to your library. Claiming and downloading are separate actions: once the claim is complete on the correct account, you can install the game later. Check the countdown or dates on the live offer and finish the claim while it is active; seeing the game advertised or opening its store page does not by itself claim it.

Epic says a free promotion that was not claimed in time cannot still be obtained for free after the offer expires. Its live Free Games page lists current offers, which can change; consult that page for the actual game, deadline, and any applicable terms rather than relying on an old date or lineup. Does a claimed Epic game stay in your library permanently?
Epic Support says previously claimed free-promotion games remain in the library permanently. That refers to the library entitlement—not outright ownership of the game or an assurance that it will remain playable in every circumstance. Epic’s End User License Agreement describes adding software to a library at no charge as a transaction and grants use under its terms. Account status, a game’s own requirements, online services, and applicable license terms can affect continued access or play.

Are Steam Free Weekend games permanent?
No. Steamworks describes a Free Weekend as providing a temporary license. It is a time-limited chance to play, not the same as a Free to Keep giveaway. Steam distinguishes Free to Keep promotions as limited-time giveaways or 100% discounts that let customers acquire the game for their libraries.

Read the specific Steam store offer carefully: “free” alone does not tell you whether access continues after a promotion. A Free to Play listing, a Free Weekend, and a Free to Keep offer have different terms.
How to claim and verify a free game
- Identify the offer type. On Steam, check whether the listing is Free to Play, Free Weekend, or a Free to Keep promotion. On Epic, confirm that the listing is a giveaway rather than a free-to-play title or temporary build.
- Check the deadline and conditions. For a limited-time giveaway, use the offer’s displayed dates or countdown. Epic’s Free Games page shows its current promotions; do not assume a past offer is still available.
- Sign in to the account you want to keep the game on. Complete the storefront’s claim or add-to-library action before the promotion expires. Downloading is not the claim.
- Verify the library entry. Confirm the game appears in the library for the same account. If an Epic game seems missing, first check that you are signed into the Epic account used to claim it; Epic lists the wrong account as a common reason games appear to be missing.
A Steam library shortcut is not a Steam game license
Steam lets you add a non-Steam game as a shortcut in the client library. That can make it convenient to launch, but Steam Support says the shortcut does not let Steam download updates for the game and is not proof that your Steam account owns a license.
