That is a sharply negative personal assessment, not a settled verdict on fit: PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware reviewers describe comfortable experiences. The practical answer is to weigh fit and intended use against the high prices reported in the review, and—if possible—to try the headset before committing.
What the review says about comfort
Harvey’s PSX Extreme review evaluates the 1TB Steam Frame. He writes that the headset “physically punished me for wearing it” and says it hurt to wear. He also criticizes its fit, materials and passthrough, and characterizes the experience as unfinished. Those are his observations and judgments from his review, not evidence that the headset is uncomfortable for every user.
Other reviewers report a different experience. PC Gamer describes the headset as light, balanced and comfortable, including after hours of play. Tom’s Hardware also reports a comfortable fit and pressure relief in its testing. The available reviews do not establish a controlled, population-wide comfort ranking, so neither experience should be treated as universal.
Fit can vary with head shape, headset setup, facial interface, session length and personal tolerance. Weight alone cannot settle whether a particular headset will feel comfortable on a particular face. Valve software developer Jeff Leinbaugh described the design goal as a headset that would be “much easier to use” and “a lighter, more comfortable, easier to get into and out of VR headset.” That is a manufacturer’s stated goal, not proof of a uniform user experience. Tom’s Hardware’s interview with Valve developers provides that context.

What the Steam Frame costs—and which model the review tested
PSX Extreme lists the Steam Frame at $1,059 USD for 256GB and $1,299 USD for 1TB. These are the prices printed in that review, not a guarantee of current price, availability or local checkout cost. Check Valve’s product page and your region’s checkout before buying.
| Configuration | Price printed by PSX Extreme | How it relates to the review |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,059 USD, as listed by PSX Extreme in its 2026 review | Reported starting configuration; not the unit Harvey reviewed |
| 1TB | $1,299 USD, as listed by PSX Extreme in its 2026 review | The configuration Harvey reviewed |
At those reported four-figure prices, comfort is central to the value question: a headset that does not fit you well is a poor purchase regardless of its specifications. PC Gamer also calls price a major obstacle, particularly for first-time VR buyers and Quest 3 owners weighing an upgrade. Valve software developer Jeremy Selan acknowledged the price challenge to PC Gamer: “Price. I wish we could have shipped it at the price that we were at last year.” PC Gamer’s review discusses both its positive experience and the cost concern.

What you get, and what the specifications do not tell you
PSX Extreme lists these specifications for the 1TB model it tested. Treat them as the review’s reported configuration; specifications do not predict fit or guarantee a particular streaming experience.
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor (ARM64) and 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory
- 1TB storage and a microSD card slot
- 21.6Wh battery
- 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye
- 72–144Hz refresh range, with 144Hz described as experimental by the review
- Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and SteamOS 3
Ars Technica reports a total headset weight of 440g and describes the battery and rear-pack arrangement as balancing the headset. It also reports a 110-degree field of view. That balance may help explain why one reviewer found the headset comfortable, but neither the weight nor the rear-mounted battery guarantees an individual fit. Ars Technica’s review gives its hands-on observations.

Is the Steam Frame a better fit for PC VR or standalone play?
The value case depends on how you plan to use it. Reviews describe wireless PC VR streaming as a strength. Ars Technica observed five to ten milliseconds of ping on its SteamOS display during streaming in its setup; this is one reviewer’s observation, not a performance guarantee. Tom’s Hardware reports excellent streaming performance in its own test setup.
Standalone play is a different trade-off. Tom’s Hardware describes standalone gaming as weaker because of emulation. A buyer mainly seeking a wireless way to play PC VR therefore has a different reason to consider the Steam Frame than someone expecting a strong library of native standalone games. The reviews do not establish a universal performance result across networks, games or setups.

Can an accessory solve a comfort problem?
PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware discuss a separately sold Ergonomic Accessories Kit that includes a top strap and extended light blocker; PC Gamer also lists controller straps. These accessories may be relevant if you want more adjustment or light blocking, but the reviews do not establish that the kit fixes an individual fit problem. Check the current kit contents, fit, availability and price before treating it as part of the purchase.
PC Gamer reports that its review unit included a spacer for glasses. That is useful context for glasses wearers, but included contents can depend on the exact SKU or package, so confirm what comes with the configuration you are buying.

How to decide whether the Steam Frame is worth it for you
- Prioritize fit: If possible, try the headset on with the facial interface and adjustments you would actually use. A reviewer’s comfort report cannot predict your fit.
- Match the price to your use: Compare the current regional price of the storage configuration you want with how much you expect to use wireless PC VR versus standalone games.
- Account for accessories separately: Check current kit pricing and contents rather than assuming comfort accessories are included or will solve pressure points.
- Be cautious about promises based on specifications: Weight, resolution and wireless standards do not establish comfort or guarantee the network performance you will get at home.
For the most current configuration and availability, consult Valve’s official Steam Frame page. Harvey’s harsh verdict is a valid account of his experience with the 1TB unit, but the disagreement among reviewers means “uncomfortable” is not a reliable blanket description. Whether the reported price is worthwhile turns on the fit you experience and whether PC VR streaming is the use that matters most to you.
