Steam Families is the current system; it is not a second option alongside Steam Family Sharing. Valve released it to all users on September 11, 2024, replacing the older Steam Family Sharing feature and Family View. A household family lets separate Steam accounts use eligible games from one another’s libraries, while adult accounts manage child controls and purchase approvals in the same area.
The important limitation is that access is shared by game copy, not by device. Two people can play different shared games at the same time, but simultaneous play of one title requires two owned copies in the family. The purchaser keeps ownership, some games cannot be shared, and Valve’s household and cooldown rules make this unsuitable for casual sharing with friends in other homes.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Families | One household sharing eligible games and managing children | Separate accounts; up to six close household members; sharing limited by owned copies | Steam client, including Steam Deck | Oct 2026 |
| Steam Family Sharing (old) | Historical terminology only | Superseded by Steam Families on September 11, 2024 | Legacy Steam feature | Oct 2026 |
Is Steam Families a separate alternative to Steam library sharing?
No. “Steam library sharing” usually refers to the former Steam Family Sharing feature, but Valve retired that product when Steam Families launched. Valve described Steam Families as “a collection of new and existing family-related features” in its September 11, 2024 announcement (Valve’s launch announcement).
That means there is no current choice between two authorization modes. If an account still shows old sharing terminology, the practical answer is to create or join a Steam Family. Valve says existing users may see suggested accounts based on people they previously shared with, but the new household rules apply once the family is created.

The replacement combines three jobs that used to be discussed separately:
- Sharing eligible games among the members’ own accounts.
- Setting restrictions, playtime limits and communication permissions for child accounts.
- Handling requests for purchases made by children.
It does not merge libraries into one account. Every member keeps a separate identity, achievements and purchase history.
How do you create a Steam Family?
Use Steam’s Family Management page, then invite each person with the role that matches their age and responsibility. The current path is Store Account Details > Family Management > Create a Family > Invite a Member, as documented in Valve’s Steam Families FAQ.
- Open the account menu. In the Steam client or website, go to Store Account Details and select Family Management.
- Create the family. Choose Create a Family and review the household terms.
- Invite a member. Search for the person’s Steam account and send an invitation.
- Choose a role. Select Adult for a responsible household member or Child for an account that should be supervised.
- Have the invitee accept. The account must satisfy Valve’s household and account-eligibility checks before joining completes.
- Repeat only for the intended household. The family area then shows shared games and the controls available to adult members.
Valve intends a Steam Family for immediate family members in one household, not an unrestricted group of remote friends. An invitation can fail when account activity does not indicate the same household, or when the account or the destination slot is under a waiting period. Treat the household check as a policy requirement rather than something to work around.
What does a member actually own when a game is shared?
The purchasing account remains the owner. Other members receive permission to launch an eligible title through the family library, but the game does not move to their accounts and they do not gain a transferable license.
The playing account keeps its own achievements. Save files are game-dependent: a title may synchronize progress for each account, use a shared profile, or impose another limitation. Check the game’s own behavior before assuming that a family member can continue another person’s campaign.
Visibility can also differ from ownership. A purchaser can mark a game private, which can prevent it from appearing as a shareable item. A developer can opt out of Family Sharing, and some titles require a separate third-party key, account or subscription. Regional licensing, operating-system support and other technical requirements can also exclude a game.

Free-to-play games and their purchased downloadable content have special restrictions in Valve’s guidance. The safest rule is to open the specific game’s library entry and confirm that it is marked shareable; do not infer eligibility from the fact that another title from the same publisher works.
How does simultaneous play work?
Steam Families counts available copies of a game, not the number of computers, handhelds or family members. One person can play Portal 2 while another plays Half-Life because those are different titles. Two people trying to play Portal 2 at the same time need two owned Portal 2 copies somewhere in the family.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Two members launch different eligible games | They can play concurrently, subject to each game’s normal requirements. |
| Two members launch the same game and the family owns one copy | Only one session can use that copy; the other member must wait. |
| Two members launch the same game and the family owns two copies | Each session can use an available copy. |
| A second computer or Steam Deck is added | It provides another device, not another license or copy. |
If no copy is free, close the other session or obtain another owned copy. A hardware purchase cannot solve a license shortage. When copies include different downloadable-content entitlements, Steam may assign a different copy as availability changes; switching copies can affect save compatibility for games that handle DLC-dependent saves differently.
Can you play a shared game offline?
Sometimes. Valve permits offline play for a shared title when that particular game supports Family Sharing, but offline access is not a universal promise for every game in the family library.

A family member should not assume that another person’s successful offline session proves every title will work the same way.
What controls can adults apply to child accounts?
Adult members can supervise child accounts from the Steam Families area. Controls cover games, the Store, Community features and chat, with playtime limits and activity reports available for household oversight.
- Game access: restrict which games a child can launch.
- Store and Community access: limit purchasing, browsing, social features or chat.
- Playtime: set allowed hours and review reports.
- Purchase requests: approve or reject a child’s request instead of allowing unrestricted checkout.
- Account recovery: use the family relationship to help recover eligible child accounts.
An approved purchase belongs to the child’s Steam account, not to the adult who paid. That distinction matters if the child later leaves the family or needs to manage the account independently.

Why might an invitation or a game fail to work?
Most failures come from eligibility rules rather than a broken installation. Check the family relationship, the account’s waiting period and the title’s sharing status before reinstalling Steam.

Valve may decline an invitation when account activity does not show the same household. A member can also be unable to join because they recently left another family, or because the slot being filled is still in its cooldown period.
A game is missing from the family library
Look for a developer opt-out, a required third-party account or subscription, regional restrictions, operating-system incompatibility, a private setting on the owning account, or a free-to-play/DLC exception. These are title-specific conditions; a different game working does not establish that the missing one is shareable.
The game says another member is using it
That message normally means the family has no free copy of that title. Wait for the existing session to end or buy another copy; moving to another computer or a Steam Deck does not increase the copy count.
Progress or downloadable content looks different
Confirm which family copy Steam assigned and whether it includes the same DLC. Achievements remain tied to the account that played, while save and DLC behavior is determined by the game.

What are the family membership and cooldown rules?
Valve’s current support guide says a member who leaves generally must wait one year before joining or creating another family, and a vacated slot generally cannot be refilled for one year. The guide was verified on October 30, 2026; Valve does not present these as a short-term toggle for rotating friends.
An adult may leave a family, and Valve lists an exception that can allow rejoining the last family when it still has room. Because a mistaken invitation can have long consequences, decide who belongs in the household group before sending invitations.

Membership also carries risk for the purchaser. If a member cheats or commits fraud while using the owner’s shared game, Valve can apply penalties to the owner’s copy or account. Invite people you trust and do not treat sharing as a way to lend a library anonymously.
What happened to the old Steam Family Sharing feature?
It was superseded, not retained as a parallel mode. Existing users should migrate to Steam Families through Family Management, where Valve may suggest accounts connected to prior sharing relationships.
Valve’s current material clearly documents the new per-copy behavior and the household model. It does not establish every historical lock condition of the old system, so claims that the legacy feature always locked an entire library under a particular circumstance should not be used as a guide to current behavior. For decisions today, follow the Steam Families rules shown in the client and support documentation.

Acquire a second owned digital copy when the family needs two simultaneous sessions. The extra device is optional; the additional license is what removes the per-copy conflict.
Steam supports gifting a newly purchased game, including delivery by email in its expanded guest-checkout and gifting update. A gift does not transfer a game that is already owned, and regional or title-specific purchase conditions still apply. Confirm the recipient’s region and platform support before buying.
A Steam Deck can be a convenient place for another household member to play, and Valve supports Steam Families in the Steam Deck client. It does not enable sharing by itself, create another game copy or bypass a title’s regional and technical restrictions.

Do not plan around physical Steam gift cards as a long-term workaround. Valve says it is ending the retail card program, will not replenish cards and expects stores to exhaust remaining stock by the end of 2026. Digital gifting is the relevant option when another copy is needed.

How should a household choose the right setup?
There is no feature choice between “Families” and “library sharing” anymore. Choose Steam Families when the accounts belong to the same household and you want shared access plus supervision; keep accounts separate when the people are outside that household or when the cooldown rules would be unacceptable.
- Use Steam Families for: parents and children with separate accounts, siblings sharing eligible games, and households that need playtime or purchase controls.
- Buy another copy for: two people who must play the same title simultaneously, especially when one copy is frequently occupied.
- Keep ownership separate for: games with third-party accounts, regional limitations, publisher opt-outs or progress that must remain independent.
- Check before inviting: household eligibility, the member’s current family status, the desired game’s sharing label and any DLC requirements.
How this comparison was framed
The comparison uses five practical criteria: whether the feature is current, who can join, how simultaneous play is allocated, what child-management tools exist and which restrictions can block a title. Those criteria explain why Steam Families is the only current system to set up, while “Steam library sharing” remains useful mainly as a name people use for the retired feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam Family include friends who live elsewhere?
Valve says Steam Families are intended for immediate family members in one household. An invitation can be refused when account activity does not support that household relationship, so the feature is not designed as a general remote-friend lending pool.
If I leave a Steam Family, can I join another one immediately?
Usually not. Valve’s support guidance describes a one-year wait before joining or creating another family, with a limited exception for rejoining the last family when space remains; a vacated slot can also remain unavailable during its own waiting period.
Do shared-game achievements appear on the owner’s profile?
No. Achievements earned while playing are credited to the account that launches the game. Save-file handling is controlled by the individual title, so achievements and progress should be treated as separate questions.
Who owns a game a parent approves for a child?
The child’s Steam account owns an approved purchase. The adult authorizes payment, but the transaction is not added to the adult’s library or ownership history.
