Your Steam save does not automatically carry over—or automatically get wiped—when an Early Access game launches version 1.0. The game’s developers decide whether the new build can load your existing save, converts it, changes parts of it, or leaves it incompatible. Steam Cloud may sync a save, but it cannot make an old save format work with a new game build.
Before a major update, check that game’s latest announcement and migration instructions, then make a separate copy of the correct save files. The difference matters: some developers promise a seamless transition, while others keep old saves playable only in an older version—or have not confirmed compatibility yet.
What happens to an Early Access save when a game reaches 1.0?
It depends on the game, not on a Steam-wide rule. A developer may preserve saves unchanged, migrate them into a new format, keep the world while modifying some saved items, or make the old save incompatible with version 1.0. Valve describes Early Access as an unfinished game and tells developers to set expectations when an update is expected to break saves. Its guidance says: “If you know your updates during Early Access will break save files, make sure you tell players up front.” Steamworks Early Access guidance
That guidance does not guarantee that every game will preserve your progress or provide a conversion tool. Look for a specific statement from the game’s developers about the build you are moving from and the release you are moving to. A general promise that a game is “leaving Early Access” is not, by itself, a compatibility promise.

What are the possible save outcomes?
Announcements from individual developers show why it is important to read the details rather than assume every 1.0 launch works the same way.

These are examples of different game-specific outcomes, not a survey of Steam games or evidence that one outcome is more common. The version numbers in the announcements identify particular releases; they do not indicate how frequently saves carry over across Early Access games.
Does “your save carries over” mean nothing will change?
No. Save compatibility and an unchanged game world are separate claims. A new build may load a world while adjusting items, character data, balance, or other content stored in that save. Read the migration notes for specific changes rather than treating “compatible” as a guarantee that every object or detail will remain exactly as it was.
Abiotic Factor illustrates the distinction: its guidance said players could continue on existing worlds, but also described changes to saved food, pets, and other data. If you care about a particular character, item, base, or unlock, check whether the developer discusses it specifically. A broad carryover statement may answer whether the save opens without answering what happens to every part of it.

How can I find out whether my game’s save will work?
Use information from the developer of that game, and check whether it applies to the release you are about to install. Valve’s Early Access guidance asks developers to keep their store-page Q&A current and communicate changes, so the store page is one useful place to start. Valve’s Early Access guidance
- Open the game’s Steam store page and recent announcements. Search the developer’s notices for terms such as “save,” “world,” “migration,” “wipe,” “compatible,” or “start over.” Check the publication date and the version being discussed.
- Read the patch notes or migration guide in full. Look for requirements to update in stages, convert a save, disable a mod, or choose a particular branch. Do not assume a process is automatic unless the developer says so.
- Check what happens to older saves. If a save will not load in 1.0, see whether the developer explains how to access an earlier version, export a world, or keep playing the old build. Availability of a legacy branch is a game-specific option, not something Steam guarantees.
- Separate confirmed decisions from plans. If the 1.0 launch has not happened, words such as “hope,” “plan,” or “still testing” do not confirm the result. Recheck the newest announcement close to the update.
- Look for separate notes about mods and other platforms. Save compatibility, mod compatibility, and transfer between platforms are different questions. Do not assume a positive answer to one settles the others.
If a notice is vague, look for a follow-up from the developer or ask in the game’s official support channel. A statement about a previous update may not apply to the next release, and a developer may clarify what “carry over” includes after publishing a fuller migration guide.
How should I protect a save before a major update?
First identify where the particular game stores its saves, then make a separate copy before installing the update. This gives you a fallback if a sync conflict or game-specific migration goes wrong; it does not make an incompatible save readable by version 1.0.

- Save normally and close the game. If the game supports Steam Cloud, allow syncing to finish before moving to another computer or starting an update. Steamworks syncs configured files around game sessions, but the developer chooses which files are included. Steamworks Cloud documentation
- Make an independent copy of the actual save files. Copy them to a clearly named folder in a separate location, such as another drive or a USB flash drive, if that suits your backup setup. Confirm the files are present before relying on the copy. Keep it untouched so you can distinguish it from the active save.
- Do not treat Steam’s userdata folder as a universal save location. Steam Support lists common local locations for Cloud files: Windows
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, macOS~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata, and Linux~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. But developers configure Cloud integration differently, and some games do not use Steam Cloud to store save games. Steam Support: Steam Cloud - Check mods against the game’s instructions. Disable or update them only as the developer recommends. Abiotic Factor warned that unsupported mods could break a world save at 1.0; Foundation said mods needed updating. Those notices are specific to those games, but they show why mod status belongs on the checklist.
For one game-specific example, the July 2026 Witchfire FAQ gave its save location as Usersyour_usernameAppDataLocalWitchfireSavedSaveGames. That path is not a general Steam location; follow the instructions for the game you are backing up. Witchfire developer FAQ

Is Steam Cloud a backup or a way to convert an old save?
No. Steam Cloud syncs files a game is configured to sync; it does not convert a save from an old format to a new one, and it is not a guaranteed backup. Steam Support notes that some games do not use Cloud to store saves and warns that sync conflicts or older uploads can result in lost progress. Steam Cloud FAQ
If Steam shows a conflict between local and Cloud files, compare both timestamps with when you last played before choosing. Steam says the most recently modified copy is often the one you want, not that it is always correct. Offline play can contribute to conflicts, and Abiotic Factor separately warned players not to overwrite a newer save with an older Cloud copy. If you are unsure, preserve both copies before making a choice.
Cloud sync and save migration solve different problems. A newer Cloud copy may help you retrieve recent progress on another computer, but it will not make a format that 1.0 rejects compatible. Likewise, a separate manual backup protects a copy from being overwritten but cannot reverse a developer’s decision that an older save cannot load in the new build.
What if my progress seems to be missing after the update?
Stop before repeatedly launching the game, overwriting files, or selecting a Cloud version. Those actions can make it harder to tell which copy contains your latest progress. Then check the game’s migration notes and the timestamps on any local-versus-Cloud conflict.

- Check the other computer, if you played on one. It may still contain a newer save that has not synced. Steam Support says syncing from that machine may make the save available elsewhere; verify the copy and its timestamp before replacing anything.
- Look for an announced migration or legacy version. Check the developer’s instructions for an import process, a previous build, or a branch intended for old saves. Foundation offered a 1.9 Steam Betas branch for its old cities, but that was a particular developer-provided option, with a warning that it might not remain available. It is not a general entitlement for other games.
- Ask the developer where this game saves progress. Steam Support says developers control Cloud integration and that Steam Support cannot recover lost saves or resolve a Cloud conflict for you. - Keep any remaining copies unchanged. If you find a local save, backup, or older-machine copy, duplicate it before trying steps that modify it. Follow the developer’s instructions rather than replacing active files with a downloaded or older copy at random.
Does a fresh start mean the developer wiped my save?
Not necessarily. A developer may recommend starting a new profile to experience a redesigned progression system or intended challenge, even if an older save remains technically compatible. That is different from a forced wipe, where the new build cannot use the old save.
Witchfire’s July 2026 FAQ made this distinction: it said the team hoped to preserve saves but had not confirmed 1.0 compatibility, while separately anticipating that it might recommend a fresh profile for the intended challenge. Because that FAQ was not a final compatibility decision, it should not be read as proof of what the eventual 1.0 release would do. Check the game’s latest notice for its actual launch policy.

Not automatically just because it carries over between Early Access and 1.0 on the same platform. Platform transfer is a separate feature that depends on the game’s support and its Cloud setup. Funguys Swarm said its saves carried into 1.0 but remained platform-specific; Steam Support likewise says cross-platform Cloud integration depends on the game. Steam Support: Steam Cloud
Before changing platforms, check for an explicit cross-save or transfer statement. “My save works in 1.0” answers whether a particular release can read it; it does not answer whether that save can move from Steam to another platform or device ecosystem.

What should I check before the 1.0 update?
- Find the latest developer announcement, patch notes, migration guide, and Early Access Q&A.
- Confirm whether your specific version’s saves will load, and whether any conversion step is required.
- Check for changes to saved items, worlds, progression, or achievements—not just a general compatibility statement.
- Save, close the game, and let supported Steam Cloud syncing finish.
- Identify the game’s actual save location and make a separate, untouched copy.
- Resolve Cloud conflicts carefully by comparing timestamps; keep both copies if uncertain.
- Check mod compatibility and any instructions for older builds or other platforms.
- For an upcoming release, recheck close to launch; an earlier plan may not be a final decision.
The practical rule is simple: only the game’s developer can confirm how that game’s saves will behave. Steam Cloud can help sync configured files, and a backup can preserve a copy, but neither replaces a game-specific compatibility statement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep playing an Early Access version after 1.0 comes out?
Sometimes, if the developer keeps an older build or branch available through Steam. Check that game’s announcement for the exact branch and any warning about future availability; the existence of a legacy version for one title does not mean other games must offer one.
Can I move a save file manually into a new game version?
A manual copy can preserve or restore files, but it will not necessarily make the new build understand their format. Only follow an import or migration procedure the developer documents, and preserve an untouched copy before changing files.

Are achievements and unlocks guaranteed to carry over with my save?
No universal Steam rule guarantees that every achievement or unlock will transfer just because a save loads. Look for the developer’s separate wording about unlocks and achievements; for example, one game may explicitly include unlocks in its carryover statement while another discusses only worlds.
Will reinstalling Steam restore a save that disappeared?
Not necessarily: reinstalling Steam does not recover a save that was deleted, never synced, or rejected by the new game version. Before reinstalling or changing files, check other computers and existing backups, and ask the game’s developer about its save location and supported recovery options.
