Sometimes, but not by default. A Steam demo can keep a local or cloud save, and a developer can configure that save to work with the purchased game. Steam’s Shared Cloud Storage feature explicitly supports a “Demo to full game” relationship, but it does not require every developer to enable it. Whether you continue where you stopped depends on the title’s policy, save-file compatibility, cloud or local-file availability, and rules such as whether a full-game save already exists.
Check the game’s official FAQ or support page before assuming your progress will transfer. Keep the demo save intact until the full game confirms an import, and follow any title-specific instructions for Steam Cloud, save slots, or progression limits.
Is there a universal Steam rule for demo saves?
No. Steam provides the technical capability, but each developer decides whether to use it. Valve’s Steamworks Features 2025 documentation lists “Demo to full game” under Shared Cloud Storage, which means a developer can make a demo and its full release share compatible cloud data. It is a configuration option, not a promise attached to every demo on Steam.

That distinction explains why two demos can behave differently. One may open the same save in the retail release, another may offer an in-game “import demo save” command, and a third may deliberately discard demo progress. The game’s own support article, FAQ, launch announcement, or an import prompt is more authoritative than a general assumption about Steam.

Steam Cloud also cannot answer the question by itself. Cloud synchronization preserves files between devices or installations; it does not make an incompatible demo save readable by the full game. A title must support both the transfer policy and the save format.
How can I check whether a particular demo transfers progress?
Use the game’s own documentation before buying or uninstalling anything. The wording often tells you whether transfer is automatic, manual, limited, or unsupported.
- Search the official support material. Look for “demo save,” “transfer progress,” “carry over,” “continue from demo,” or “import save.” Check the developer or publisher FAQ rather than relying on a forum post about a different game.
- Read the conditions, not just the headline. Note whether the game requires Steam Cloud, a manual import, an empty full-game save slot, or the demo to remain installed. Look for restrictions on chapters, levels, items, or other progress.
- Look for an in-game import message. Some supported titles detect the demo file when the full game starts; others require a menu command. Follow the prompt exactly and do not create a new full-game save first if the instructions say an existing save blocks import.
- Record the title’s limits. A demo can stop recording after a level, chapter, or progression cap. Progress earned beyond that boundary may not exist in the file that the full game receives.
If the official information does not mention transfer, treat the outcome as unknown rather than guaranteed. Steam’s store page or Cloud setting may show that synchronization exists, but neither one establishes compatibility.

Transfer normally works only when several conditions line up: the developer has enabled a demo-to-full path, the demo and retail versions use compatible save data, and the file is still available when the full game looks for it.
The developer supports the relationship
The full game must be designed to recognize the demo’s save. Shared Cloud Storage gives the developer a platform mechanism, but the developer still controls the implementation and policy. A title can support transfer automatically, require a manual import, or refuse it entirely.
The save file survives the handoff
A local-only save can disappear if the demo is removed before the file is copied or synchronized. A cloud-backed save can also be unavailable if Cloud Save Data was disabled or synchronization did not complete. Preserve the demo installation and its save until the retail version confirms that it has loaded the data.

The file remains within the demo’s supported scope
Some demos intentionally stop recording certain progress after a level or progression limit. Square Enix’s support guidance says that progress beyond the demo’s level or progression limits is not stored for transfer. Buying the game therefore cannot restore progress that the demo never wrote to its transferable save.

Official statements from several games illustrate why the answer is title-specific.

These examples are not a prediction for other games. They show that a positive transfer in one title does not create a Steam-wide precedent, and a no-transfer policy can be an intentional design choice rather than a technical failure.
Does Steam Cloud transfer a demo save automatically?
Not necessarily. Steam Cloud can upload and download the files that a game marks for synchronization, but the full game must still be configured to find and interpret the demo data. Cloud status therefore answers “where is this file stored?” rather than “can the retail game use it?”
When a title’s instructions rely on Steam Cloud, enable Cloud Save Data for both the demo and the full game before changing devices. Square Enix specifically gives this instruction for Steam Deck players. Dinkum’s FAQ likewise warns that disabling Steam Cloud can leave the only copy on the local installation.

Cloud synchronization can also preserve an unsupported save perfectly. If the developer says demo files will not carry over, turning Cloud on will not override that policy. Conversely, a supported title can still fail to import when the relevant file was never synchronized or was deleted locally.

What can block an otherwise supported transfer?
A game can advertise transfer and still reject a particular save because of a condition in its import rules.
An existing full-game save
Square Enix states that demo data transfers only when no full-game save already exists. If you launch the retail game and create a save before importing, the title may no longer offer the demo option. Its instructions may require deleting the existing full-game save first; do that only after checking the game’s support guidance and preserving any save you want to keep.
A demo progression cap
The demo may stop storing experience or progress after a specified level or progression boundary. You can finish the demo with a visible progress total, but only the portion within the transfer rules is available to the full game.

Uninstalling a demo that stored its save only locally can remove the file needed for import. Disabling Steam Cloud before the file is synchronized creates a similar risk when you move to another computer or a Steam Deck.
An intentional no-transfer policy
Some developers refuse imports to prevent narrative or progression problems. The Brigador: Killers announcement cites missed story beats and progression issues; the Toxic Commando FAQ simply states that demo saves will not carry over. No local-file workaround can turn those policies into supported transfers.
Incompatible save data
A demo and full release can use different save structures or identifiers. Steam’s storage service does not convert one format into another. Only the game’s developer can provide a compatible import path or explain whether a manual conversion is supported.

What should I do before buying or switching devices?
Follow this conservative handoff procedure when the title says transfer is supported.
- Finish the demo and save normally. Exit through the game’s own save or quit commands so the latest state is written.
- Keep the demo installed. Do not remove it while you are still confirming the transfer, especially when the developer warns that the save may be local-only.
- Confirm Cloud Save Data settings. If the title’s instructions mention Steam Cloud, enable it for the demo and full game. Allow synchronization to finish before moving to another device.
- Install and start the full game carefully. Read the first-run screens for an import option. If the documentation requires an empty full-game save, do not start a new campaign before importing.
- Verify the result in-game. Check the chapter, level, inventory, or other item the developer says should transfer. Do not delete the demo until this check succeeds.
- Keep a fallback copy when the title permits it. If the developer documents a local save location or backup method, preserve the original file before experimenting with deletion or replacement. Do not rename or edit files unless the official instructions say to do so.
If the game provides no import prompt despite promising transfer, close it without creating more saves and consult the title’s support instructions. Creating additional full-game data can change the conditions under which an import is offered.
Why did my demo save not appear in the full version?
Work through the likely causes in this order rather than assuming the save is gone.
- Check the policy first. Confirm that this specific title supports transfer; the Steam Cloud icon is not proof.
- Check the device and account. Make sure the demo and full game are running under the same Steam account and that Cloud Save Data is enabled where the title requires it.
- Check for an existing full-game save. A supported title may hide the import when any retail save exists. Follow the developer’s directions before removing one.
- Check the demo’s limits. Progress after a stated level or chapter cap may not have been written for transfer.
- Check whether the local file survived. If you uninstalled the demo or disabled Cloud before synchronization, the needed data may no longer be available.
- Check the import method. Some games import automatically; others require a menu command or a prompt on first launch. Search the official support page for the exact sequence.
If the official policy says “no transfer,” troubleshooting cannot change the result. If it says transfer should work and the conditions are satisfied, contact the game’s support team with the title, device, and the steps already completed; avoid repeatedly launching and saving in ways that could overwrite the original state.

Not always. Save data, achievements, unlock flags, and account statistics can follow separate rules even when the main progress imports successfully. Square Enix notes that some Chapter 1 achievements can unlock from transferred progress, which means achievement behavior must be checked independently of the save-transfer statement.
Look for a separate achievements or rewards section in the game’s FAQ. Do not assume that an imported chapter, item, or level will retroactively trigger every achievement, unlock, leaderboard entry, or online statistic.

What is the safest rule for Steam demo progress?
Treat every demo as a separate case. A transfer is reliable only when the developer explicitly supports it, the demo and full game can read the same save, and the relevant local or cloud file remains available.
