Steam Deck can install games to its built-in drive or to a formatted microSD card. To use a new card, back up its contents, insert it, and choose Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card. Then create or select the card’s Steam library in Steam > Settings > Storage. For an installed game, open its Library page and use Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder to transfer it between configured locations without downloading the game again. If a moved game is shown as uninstalled, add its existing library folder in Storage Manager and use Repair Folder or Verify Integrity of Game Files.

What do you need before installing Steam games to a microSD card?

You need a Steam Deck (LCD or OLED), a microSD card that meets Valve’s compatibility guidance, and enough free space at the destination. Valve says any UHS-I class 3 or better microSD card is supported. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but Steam Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds.

Choose a card described as a UHS-I, U3 (class 3) microSD card for Steam Deck. The compatibility requirement does not establish a particular brand, capacity, price, game-loading result, or endurance rating. Those vary by product and should be checked separately.

  • Back up existing data: Formatting the card erases its contents. Copy photos, documents, recordings, or other files elsewhere before starting.
  • Use the correct slot: Insert the card fully into the Steam Deck’s microSD slot before opening the formatting menu.
  • Plan your library locations: The internal drive and formatted card can each hold a Steam library, and Steam can manage both from its Storage settings.
  • Keep the card available during transfers: Do not remove or eject it while Steam is moving or verifying files.

Valve’s basic storage guidance applies to both Steam Deck LCD and Steam Deck OLED models. Menu wording can change with SteamOS updates, but the documented workflow uses the paths below.

What does “UHS-I class 3 or better” mean here?

It is the compatibility specification Valve publishes for Steam Deck microSD storage. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are not automatically unusable, but the Deck does not support the faster transfer modes associated with those ratings. Buying a higher-rated card therefore does not guarantee a corresponding Steam Deck benefit. Keep the requirement focused on the card being a UHS-I, class 3 or better model rather than relying on an unverified brand or performance claim.

How do I format a new microSD card on Steam Deck?

A new card must be formatted by Steam Deck before it can be used for game storage. Valve’s support instruction is explicit: “MicroSD cards will need to be formatted before they can be used with your Steam Deck.” Formatting is destructive, so confirm your backup first.

  1. Insert the microSD card into the Steam Deck.
  2. Open Steam.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open System.
  5. Select Format SD Card.
  6. Read the warning, confirm that the card is the one you intend to erase, and approve the format.
  7. Wait for Steam Deck to finish. Do not power off the device or remove the card during the operation.

After a successful format, the card should appear as a usable storage location in Steam’s Storage settings. If it does not, restart Steam or the Deck, then check Steam > Settings > Storage before formatting again.

Formatting versus moving: do not confuse these operations

Formatting prepares a card and removes its existing contents. It is required for a new card that has not yet been prepared for Steam Deck storage. Moving an installed game is a separate operation that preserves the installation and changes its library location. If your goal is simply to free internal space, do not format a card that already contains the files you want to keep; configure its existing library and use Move Install Folder instead.

How do I add the microSD card as a Steam library?

Formatting prepares the card, but Steam still needs a library folder there. Storage settings are where you create, select, and manage alternate installation locations.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Review the listed internal and removable drives.
  3. Use the option to add or create a library location on the formatted microSD card.
  4. When Steam asks for a folder, select the card’s Steam library folder or create one in the card’s storage view.
  5. Confirm the location so it appears in the Storage list.

Valve describes this as creating an alternate location from the Storage tab. Once the card’s library is listed, it can be selected when installing new games or as the destination for a move.

Why library registration matters

A card can be physically present without its Steam library being registered. Steam’s installer and Move Install Folder command offer destinations they know as Steam libraries, not merely every drive the operating system can see. Register the folder in Storage before troubleshooting an unavailable destination. The same registration step is also the first recovery action when existing game files are present but Steam displays an Install button.

How do I install a new Steam game directly to the microSD card?

Choose the destination during the normal Steam installation process. The game will download and install into the library location you select; there is no separate transfer utility required.

  1. Open your Library and select the game.
  2. Choose Install.
  3. When Steam displays the installation location, open the destination selector.
  4. Select the Steam library on the microSD card. Select the internal library instead if you want the game on built-in storage.
  5. Confirm the installation and leave the card inserted until the download and installation finish.

If the card is not offered, return to Steam > Settings > Storage and confirm that it is formatted and that its library folder is listed. A card that is visible to the operating system but absent from Steam’s Storage list is not yet a selectable Steam library location.

Choosing a location for each new install

There is no requirement to put every game in one place. Keep the internal library selected when you want the built-in location, or select the registered microSD library when you want the removable location. The choice is made per installation, and both libraries remain manageable from the same Storage screen. Make sure the selected destination has enough free space before confirming; Steam cannot complete an installation or move if the destination cannot hold the files.

How do I move an installed game between internal storage and microSD?

Use Steam’s built-in Move Install Folder command. This transfers the existing installation between configured Steam libraries, so you do not need to download the entire game again.

  1. Open the game’s page in your Library.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Move Install Folder….
  5. Select the destination library on the internal drive or formatted microSD card.
  6. Confirm the move.
  7. Wait for Steam to report completion before launching the game, shutting down, or removing the card.

The command only offers libraries Steam knows about. If the card is missing from the destination list, configure it first in Steam > Settings > Storage. If you are moving from the card to internal storage, make sure the internal library has enough free space for the installed files.

What happens during a move?

Steam relocates the game files from the source library to the selected destination and updates the installation record. The operation is different from uninstalling: the purpose is to preserve the installed files while changing their storage location. The time required depends on the amount of data and the storage devices, but Valve’s documentation does not establish a universal transfer time or performance figure.

Can I move several games?

Repeat the same command for each game, or use the Storage view to manage installations when its selection controls are available. Treat each move as a completed operation: wait for Steam to finish one transfer before removing the card or starting maintenance on the destination.

Can I move a game while it is running?

Close the game before starting the move. Keep Steam running normally, leave the card inserted, and avoid shutdowns or interruptions until Steam reports completion. A move is a file operation, not a shortcut that merely changes where Steam looks for the game.

Should I use internal storage or a microSD card?

Both locations can be managed through Steam’s library settings and the same Move Install Folder workflow. The practical difference is convenience versus removable capacity, not a guaranteed game-specific performance result.

Consideration Internal storage microSD card
Convenience Always attached; no card handling is required. Requires the card to remain inserted for games stored there.
Removability Fixed during normal use. Can be removed or exchanged when Steam is not using it.
Compatibility setup Available as the built-in Steam location. Must be formatted by Steam Deck and should be UHS-I class 3 or better.
Installation workflow Select its Steam library in Storage or during installation. Select its formatted Steam library in Storage or during installation.
Moving games Can be the source or destination of Move Install Folder. Can be the source or destination of Move Install Folder.
Main recovery issue Usually remains registered unless its library path changes. Steam may need the existing library folder added again after a path or card-recognition problem.

Internal storage is the simpler option when you do not want to manage removable media. A microSD library is useful when you need another Steam location or want to exchange cards, but it introduces the requirement that the card stay inserted for those games. Neither choice changes the Steam menu workflow: register the library, select it for an installation, or use Move Install Folder for an existing title.

Do not assume that a faster-rated card will produce a corresponding Steam Deck benefit: Valve supports UHS-I class 3 or better and says the higher transfer speeds of UHS-II and UHS-III are not supported.

Why does Steam say a moved game is uninstalled?

Steam can lose track of an existing installation when the library folder is not registered, the card was removed, or the storage path changed. The files may still be present; first reconnect the card and add the existing library folder instead of downloading immediately.

  1. Insert the microSD card and wait for Steam Deck to recognize it.
  2. Open Steam > Settings > Storage to open Storage Manager.
  3. Use the plus (+) button to add a library folder.
  4. Browse to the existing Steam library folder on the microSD card or internal drive.
  5. Confirm the folder and allow Steam to rescan it.
  6. Return to the Library and check whether the game is listed as installed.

Valve’s support guidance says adding the existing library folder can make installed games appear again. Do not delete the folder before trying this recovery; doing so removes the files Steam may be able to reuse.

What if the folder is present but the game still is not recognized?

Confirm that you added the library folder itself, not an unrelated parent folder, and that the correct card or drive is connected. If Steam identifies a library problem, use Repair Folder. Once the game appears in the Library, use Verify Integrity of Game Files if individual files may be missing or damaged.

How do I repair a library or verify a game’s files?

Use Repair Folder when Steam has trouble with the library itself, and use Verify Integrity of Game Files when a particular installation may contain missing or corrupted files.

Repair the library folder

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Select the affected drive or library.
  3. Open its options menu.
  4. Choose Repair Folder and let Steam complete the repair.

Repair Folder addresses the library location. It is the appropriate next step when the folder is present but Steam reports a path or library problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify one game

  1. Open the game in your Library.
  2. Open Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Verify Integrity of Game Files.
  5. Wait for Steam to compare the local installation and reacquire files it identifies as missing or damaged.

Verification is separate from moving. Run it after Steam recognizes the library and the game, not as a substitute for adding a missing library folder.

What should I do when the card or library is not shown?

  • The card is not listed in Storage: Confirm it is fully inserted, restart Steam, and check again. If it is a new card, use Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card; remember that formatting erases its contents.
  • The card is listed but has no selectable library: Add or create a library folder from Steam > Settings > Storage, then retry the installation or move.
  • A game shows an Install button even though files are present: Use Storage Manager’s plus button to add the existing library folder and let Steam rescan it.
  • Steam reports a folder problem: Select Repair Folder in Storage Manager.
  • The game launches poorly or files are suspect: Use Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files.
  • The move appears stuck: Keep the Deck powered and the card inserted until Steam completes the operation. Interrupting a transfer can leave the library needing a repair or verification pass.
  • You want to swap cards: Close any game using the card and let Steam finish downloads, moves, or verification before removing it. Re-add the library folder if Steam does not automatically recognize it when the card is inserted again.

What not to do during recovery

Do not format first just because Steam shows an Install button. Formatting can erase the existing installation and other files. Do not remove the card while Steam is scanning, repairing, verifying, downloading, or moving. Reconnect the storage, register the library, repair the folder, and verify the game in that order as needed.

What is the safest workflow for moving games regularly?

Use a repeatable sequence so Steam always has a valid library record and the card is not removed during file operations.

  1. Check the destination in Steam > Settings > Storage before starting.
  2. For a new card, back up its contents and format it from Settings > System > Format SD Card.
  3. Add or confirm the card’s Steam library folder.
  4. For a new title, select that library during installation.
  5. For an existing title, use Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder.
  6. Wait for completion and launch the game once Steam shows it as installed.
  7. If it appears uninstalled, add the existing library folder, then use Repair Folder or Verify Integrity of Game Files as appropriate.

This workflow keeps formatting, library registration, file movement, and recovery as separate operations. That distinction prevents the common mistake of formatting a card when the goal was only to move an already-installed game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install Steam games to a microSD card without formatting it?

No. Valve requires a microSD card to be formatted before Steam Deck can use it for game storage. Copy any existing files elsewhere first because the format erases the card.

Will moving a game to an SD card make me download it again?

No, Move Install Folder is designed to relocate the existing installation between Steam library locations. A new download is generally only needed if files are missing or verification finds that they must be reacquired.

Can I use a UHS-II or UHS-III card in Steam Deck?

Valve says those cards are expected to work, but Steam Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds. Valve’s supported specification is any UHS-I class 3 or better microSD card.

Do I need a separate transfer utility to move games?

No. Steam includes the Move Install Folder command under the game’s Properties and Installed Files menus. Configure both library locations in Storage, then select the destination there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my microSD card visible but unavailable during installation?

The card may be formatted but lack a registered Steam library. Open Steam > Settings > Storage and add or create a library folder on the card, then return to the installation screen.

What should I do before removing a Steam Deck SD card?

Finish downloads, moves, repairs, and file verification, close any game stored on the card, and shut down or otherwise ensure Steam is no longer using the library. If the library is not recognized after reinserting the card, add its existing folder in Storage Manager.

Should I format a card that already contains my Steam games?

Not if your goal is only to change where the games are stored. Formatting erases the card. Add the existing library folder in Storage Manager and use Move Install Folder or recovery tools instead.

Does Steam Deck OLED use a different storage process?

No. Valve’s basic storage guidance applies to both Steam Deck LCD and Steam Deck OLED models, including formatting the card, registering a library, installing to it, and moving games between libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Format a new card only after backing it up, use a UHS-I class 3 or better model, register its library in Steam > Settings > Storage, and move existing games through Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder. If Steam loses track of a moved game, add the existing library folder before downloading again.
