A SteamOS or Steam Client update can make Decky Loader disappear, leave its menu unable to open, or break one plugin while the rest still work. The safest recovery is to restart the Deck, finish every pending SteamOS and Steam Client update, then identify whether Decky itself is missing or only a particular plugin is incompatible. Reinstall Decky from Desktop Mode on the stable branch only when it has vanished; isolate or remove a single plugin when Decky still opens.
Identify what actually broke
“Plugins stopped working” can describe several different failures. Correctly classifying the symptom prevents unnecessary reinstalls and reduces the chance of deleting plugin data.
| What you see | Most likely scope | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The Decky icon or menu is gone entirely | Decky Loader may not have started after the SteamOS update. | Restart, complete updates, then rerun the official Decky installer in Desktop Mode on the stable branch. |
| The Decky menu opens, but every plugin is missing or stuck loading | Decky’s plugin service may need a reload, or a Steam interface change may have made the installed releases incompatible. | Use Decky settings to reload plugins and check for updates. |
| Only one plugin crashes, shows a blank panel, or never loads | That plugin is likely incompatible with the current Steam interface or has a damaged installation. | Update that plugin; if it still fails, disable or uninstall only it and reload Decky. |
| Decky appears intermittently or reports a connection error | Another background service may be occupying a port Decky needs. | Check Desktop Mode services for conflicts on ports 8080 and 1337. |
Do not assume that a post-update failure means your saved games are damaged. The symptoms described here concern Decky and its extensions, not the game files themselves. Keep the repair focused on the affected layer.

Start with the low-risk checks
Restart from Gaming Mode
Choose the Steam Deck’s restart command in Gaming Mode rather than merely waking it from sleep. A reboot allows Steam Client services and Decky’s background process to start again after an update. Steam Support lists checking for updates and restarting among its first software-troubleshooting steps.

Finish both kinds of updates
Open the system update controls and let all pending SteamOS updates finish. Then allow the Steam Client to complete any separate client update and restart when prompted. A Deck that has downloaded an update but has not completed its restart can present a half-updated interface, which is a poor basis for diagnosing a plugin.
- Keep the Deck connected to power if an update is lengthy.
- Wait until the update indicator has disappeared and the normal Gaming Mode interface returns.
- Restart once more after the final update, then test the Decky menu before changing files.
If the menu returns after this sequence, no reinstall is needed. If it does not, continue according to whether Decky is missing or merely has a broken extension.
If Decky Loader disappeared
The Decky project documents a specific post-SteamOS-update failure: Decky can disappear even though the Deck itself is working normally. Its recommended first repair is to rerun the official installer and install the stable branch again. The installer guidance says to prepare a mouse and keyboard if possible; Desktop Mode is easier to operate with those inputs, especially when downloading and launching the installer.

Reinstall the stable branch in Desktop Mode
- Switch from Gaming Mode to Desktop Mode using the Deck’s power menu.
- Connect to the internet and, if available, attach a USB-C or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
- Download or rerun the official Decky Loader installer from the Decky project’s installation instructions.
- When the installer asks which branch to use, select stable.
- Allow the installation to complete, then return to Gaming Mode.
- Open the Decky menu and check whether the installed plugins appear and load.
Rerunning the installer is different from uninstalling each plugin. Use the installer repair path first when Decky itself vanished. Do not delete plugin directories as a precaution; destructive cleanup can remove plugin files and may not remove other files a plugin previously created.

Aluminum metal hinges have a lifespan over 100,000 times. It automatically magnetically locks in place after folded to prevent easy opening.
When to try the prerelease branch
The project’s documented order is stable first. If reinstalling stable does not restore Decky, repeat the installation using the prerelease branch. A prerelease build can contain compatibility fixes not yet in stable, but it can also introduce changes that have not received the same level of validation. Treat it as an escalation step, not the default answer to every broken plugin.
| Branch | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | Decky disappeared after an update or you want the normal supported installation path. | May not yet include a fix for a newly changed Steam interface. |
| Prerelease | The stable reinstall did not bring Decky back and the project’s guidance points to the alternate branch. | Earlier builds can change more often and may have their own defects. |
If Decky opens but one plugin fails
A single broken extension usually calls for plugin-level troubleshooting, not a complete Decky reset. Steam’s interface changes can invalidate an individual plugin while leaving Decky and other extensions usable. Community reports describe this pattern, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish that a particular workaround will work on every Deck.
Update the affected plugin
- Open the Decky menu in Gaming Mode.
- Enter Decky’s settings and open the plugin-management or updates area.
- Check for updates and install the update for the failing plugin.
- Use Decky’s reload control after the update, then close and reopen the menu.
Test the plugin by reproducing the original action, such as opening its panel or changing one setting. If it works after an update and reload, leave the rest of your plugins untouched.

- Removing a plugin removes its plugin files.
- Uninstalling does not necessarily remove every file or setting the plugin created elsewhere.
- Before uninstalling, note any custom settings you may need to recreate and copy out user-created data you know the plugin stores outside its own installation directory.
Add the plugin back only after its maintainer publishes a release that supports the current Steam interface. Reinstalling the same incompatible build immediately can put the failure back and make isolation harder.
Do not treat community workarounds as guarantees
Users have reported success with fresh plugin installs, manual plugin updates, or preview builds. Those are possible escalation options after the documented stable reinstall path, not universal fixes. A preview build may solve a compatibility problem sooner, but it can also change behavior or introduce another defect. Record which branch and plugin version you used so you can reverse the change if necessary.
Reload Decky before removing more software
When the Decky menu still opens, use its built-in reload control before deleting files or reinstalling Decky. Reloading restarts the plugin layer and can clear a stale process left behind by an update. Also use the settings screen to check for plugin updates. These controls are part of Decky’s documented troubleshooting workflow.

Check for port conflicts in Desktop Mode
Decky’s common-issues documentation identifies software using ports 8080 or 1337 as a possible cause of connection failures. A background service can claim a port Decky expects, making Decky appear missing or preventing its menu from communicating with its plugins.
Syncthing on port 8080
The documentation specifically calls out Syncthing using port 8080. If Syncthing is installed and its web interface is configured for that port, open Syncthing’s settings in Desktop Mode and change it to 8384, the port recommended by the Decky documentation. Save the change, restart the affected service, and then reload Decky or restart the Deck.
General conflict check
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- List background services and applications that expose a local web interface or server.
- Look for configurations using port 8080 or 1337.
- Stop one suspected service temporarily and test Decky.
- If Decky returns, assign the other service a different port that it supports, then restart both services.
Change one service at a time and write down its original port. That makes it possible to restore the old configuration if the conflict was unrelated.
Use a decision path instead of a blanket reset
| Decision point | Recommended path | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Decky icon is absent after all updates and a restart | Desktop Mode, rerun the official installer, stable branch. | Deleting every plugin first. |
| Stable reinstall does not restore Decky | Try the prerelease branch as the project’s next documented option. | Assuming prerelease is automatically safer. |
| Decky opens and one plugin fails | Update that plugin, reload, then disable or uninstall only it if needed. | Reinstalling Decky or removing working plugins. |
| Decky reports a connection-style error | Investigate ports 8080 and 1337, including Syncthing’s 8080 configuration. | Changing random system settings without recording them. |
| Nothing in the documented path works | Collect version and error details, search existing Decky issues, then contact Decky or Steam support. | Repeating destructive cleanup without a new hypothesis. |
Preserve settings and plugin-created files
Decky repair does not require wiping your game library. Still, plugin removal can have side effects because a plugin may create files outside its own plugin directory. Before uninstalling a suspect extension:

- Record the plugin name and the settings you care about.
- Export or copy any data the plugin explicitly offers to export.
- In Desktop Mode, copy user-created files to another location if you know where the plugin stores them.
- Do not delete unrelated Decky or Steam directories merely because their names are unfamiliar.
These precautions matter most for plugins that manage profiles, scripts, media, or other user-generated content. The official warning is limited but important: uninstalling removes plugin files, not necessarily every file the plugin created.
Gather useful details before escalating
If the stable reinstall, plugin isolation, reload, and port checks do not solve the problem, collect details that let a maintainer reproduce it. The Decky project recommends searching existing issues before filing a new one.
- SteamOS branch and version shown in the Deck’s system information.
- Steam Client version and the date the update completed.
- Decky branch: stable or prerelease.
- The exact plugin name and, if visible, its installed version.
- Whether Decky itself is missing, opens with an empty list, or fails only when one plugin is selected.
- The exact error text, including whether it appears in Gaming Mode or Desktop Mode.
- What you already tried: restart, pending updates, reload, reinstall branch, plugin removal, and port changes.
Use the Decky issue tracker for Decky-specific failures. For broader SteamOS or Steam Client problems, use Steam Support, the Steam forums, or the project channels Steam Support directs users to. Include the details above instead of reporting only that “plugins stopped working.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat not to conclude from a failed fix
A failed stable reinstall does not prove the hardware is faulty
Stable and prerelease are software branches. If stable does not restore Decky, the project’s guidance is to try prerelease; it is not evidence that the Deck itself needs repair.
One broken plugin does not mean Decky is broken
If the Decky menu opens and other extensions work, isolate the individual plugin. Removing working extensions or reinstalling the entire loader can discard useful settings without addressing the incompatible code.
A community workaround is not a supported compatibility promise
Manual updates and preview builds can help some users, but reports from other Deck owners do not guarantee the same result for your SteamOS branch, Steam Client version, or plugin combination. Prefer the documented stable path and keep a record of any experimental change.
Recovery checklist
- Restart the Deck from Gaming Mode.
- Finish all pending SteamOS and Steam Client updates.
- Test the Decky menu.
- If Decky opens, reload plugins and check for plugin updates.
- If only one plugin fails, update it, then disable or uninstall only that plugin if necessary.
- If Decky disappeared, switch to Desktop Mode and rerun the official installer on stable.
- If stable does not work, try the prerelease branch.
- Check for services using ports 8080 or 1337; move Syncthing from 8080 to 8384 if applicable.
- Preserve settings and plugin-created files before destructive cleanup.
- Record versions and errors, search existing Decky issues, and contact Decky or Steam support if the problem remains.
Why updates trigger these failures
Decky plugins interact with the Steam interface rather than operating in isolation. A SteamOS update can also update the Steam Client or alter the way that interface exposes menus and services. Decky may therefore need to be reinstalled, while an individual plugin may need a compatible release from its maintainer. The available documentation establishes the recovery actions above, but it does not provide an authoritative failure rate, compatibility percentage, or expected repair time. Treat each result as dependent on your Decky branch, SteamOS and Steam Client versions, installed plugins, and background services.
