Choose the Steam Deck OLED if most of your games are on Steam and you want a handheld-focused interface, trackpads and quick suspend/resume. Choose a Windows handheld if you rely on Windows-native launchers, apps or Xbox services, or want a higher-resolution display. The trade-off depends on the specific games and device: “Windows handheld” includes different models, from the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X to ASUS’s listed 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20. Check your must-play games, launchers and online services before buying.

Start with your games and launchers

The operating system determines which storefronts and services are easiest to use, but it does not guarantee that every title works. Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3; the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) and ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) run Windows 11 Home. Xbox describes the ROG Xbox Ally line as bringing together Xbox games, Game Pass titles where available, and installed games from other PC stores. Availability and compatibility still depend on the particular title, service and region. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications; ASUS’s 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X specifications; ASUS’s 2026 X20 specifications; Xbox’s ROG Xbox Ally launch announcement.

If your library is mostly Steam

The Deck is the more direct fit for a Steam-centered library: SteamOS is designed around the handheld, and Valve provides compatibility information for Steam games. Check each game you care about rather than assuming that a Steam listing guarantees an identical experience on the Deck. Titles that rely on particular launchers, always-online access or multiplayer anti-cheat deserve special attention.

If you use Windows storefronts or Xbox services

A Windows handheld is the more natural starting point when you depend on Windows apps or launchers outside Steam. Xbox describes native play for installed PC games, Xbox Play Anywhere for supported titles, remote play from an Xbox console, and Xbox Cloud Gaming where available. Cloud play depends on network quality, regional service availability and subscription terms; it is not a universal substitute for local game compatibility.

Check online and offline requirements

Valve says an installed Deck game can be played offline unless that game itself requires an internet connection. Downloading games and online multiplayer require internet access. Valve also says the Deck can run non-Steam games through Proton, but that does not establish that every non-Steam launcher or title will work smoothly. Verify the specific game and the service features you need.

How the current models compare

There is no single Windows-handheld specification. The following figures distinguish the Steam Deck OLED from two specifically named ASUS models; they are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. The older ROG Ally X mentioned in a battery comparison later is a different device-generation context from the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) and X20 (2026).

What the display numbers mean

The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X offers a 1080p, 120 Hz IPS display with VRR, while the Deck OLED has a 1280 × 800, up-to-90 Hz HDR OLED panel. The 2026 X20 combines 1080p resolution and up-to-120 Hz with OLED. If OLED contrast is your priority, compare the Deck OLED with the X20 rather than assuming every Windows handheld has the same panel. If resolution and refresh rate matter more, compare the exact Windows model and the games you play; specifications alone do not establish how a particular game performs.

Battery capacity is not play time

Watt-hours describe battery capacity, not how long a device lasts in a particular game. Valve’s estimate for the Deck OLED is 3–12 hours depending on content; ASUS lists 80 Wh batteries for both named Ally models but does not give a comparable runtime estimate in the cited specifications.

For a sense of how much workload and test setup matter, Tom’s Guide reported a Cyberpunk 2077 battery run of 1 hour 25 minutes on its Steam Deck OLED review unit and 2 hours 14 minutes on its older ROG Ally X review unit. Those results belong to that publication’s specific devices, settings and test; the Ally X in that comparison is not the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X or 2026 X20. They should not be treated as a general runtime prediction. Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

Which one is easier to use?

Steam Deck OLED: a handheld-first experience

Valve lists two haptic trackpads and quick suspend/resume among the Deck’s features. The trackpads can help with pointer-style input, and suspend/resume can suit short play sessions. They are useful design features, not a promise that every game or sleep state behaves identically. Valve’s SteamOS features make the Deck the safer starting recommendation if you want a small-screen, handheld-oriented interface. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED information.

Windows handhelds: more PC flexibility, more to navigate

Windows provides access to Windows apps and launchers, but using a desktop-oriented operating system on a small screen can involve more navigation. An editorial comparison found the Windows desktop experience could require more navigation than the Deck; that is a usability judgment, not a rule for every owner or setup. Xbox says its goal with the Xbox Ally was “to deliver a distinctly Xbox experience in the palm of your hands.” That statement describes the vendor’s design intent, not independent proof of ease of use or game compatibility. Price: compare the offer in your market now

These figures are dated US context, not a live price comparison. The ROG Xbox Ally launch announcement set estimated US retail prices in September 2025; Windows Central reported a US Steam Deck OLED price in May 2026. Prices, stock and configurations can vary by market and date.

Storage and connecting to a larger screen

Choose a memory card for the exact device

The Steam Deck supports microSD, while ASUS specifies UHS-II microSD for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X and microSD Express for the 2026 X20. Check the standard supported by the exact handheld before buying a card; those formats should not be treated as interchangeable recommendations.

Docking adds connections, not gaming performance

A Steam Deck Docking Station or compatible USB-C hub can connect the Deck to displays and peripherals. Valve says docking does not improve performance, so choose a dock for connectivity rather than expecting higher frame rates. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.

Make the choice by your must-play list

  1. List the games and services you cannot give up. Include multiplayer titles, non-Steam launchers, subscriptions and any Xbox console remote-play needs.
  2. Check compatibility title by title. Pay particular attention to always-online games and multiplayer games with anti-cheat, and confirm current compatibility information before relying on either platform.
  3. Pick the interface and hardware that suit your routine. Favor the Deck for SteamOS, its trackpads and handheld-focused use; favor a specific Windows model for Windows apps or services. Compare its actual display and card format rather than using “Windows handheld” as a specification.
  4. Check local price, stock and configuration. Historical US price announcements and reports are useful context, not a quote for your current market or retailer.
