The Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally X make different tradeoffs. Manufacturer specifications describe hardware, not matched game performance or hands-on comfort, so the figures below are best used to identify which features fit your priorities.

Specifications are from Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications and ASUS’s ROG Ally X (2024) specifications. Configurations and availability can vary by market; check the exact model and local listing.
Which handheld has the better screen?
It depends on what you value. The Deck OLED has a larger 7.4-inch HDR OLED panel, while the Ally X has a 7-inch 1080p IPS-level panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate. The Deck’s OLED technology and larger listed size are distinct from the Ally X’s higher resolution, refresh ceiling, and VRR support. These specs do not establish which screen will look better to every viewer or how a particular game will run.

Which is faster for games?
The Ally X has the higher listed processor and graphics specifications, along with 24GB of memory compared with the Deck OLED’s 16GB. That makes it the stronger choice on paper if listed compute and memory are your priority. Specifications alone do not establish a consistent frame-rate advantage: results depend on the game, resolution, graphics settings, power profile, and software versions. No matched benchmark figures are established here.
How do SteamOS and Windows 11 affect what you can play?
The Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3; the Ally X runs Windows 11 Home. This changes the software environment and workflows available on each device. Windows may suit someone who wants a Windows-based handheld, while SteamOS may appeal to someone who wants Valve’s Steam-focused interface and console-like navigation.

Do not assume either operating system guarantees access to every game, launcher, anti-cheat system, mod, or subscription service. If a specific title or service is decisive, check its current support for the exact device and operating system before buying. In particular, verify the games you want to play through PC Game Pass or other subscriptions rather than choosing based on the operating-system name alone.
Which has longer battery life?
The published capacity is 50Wh for the Steam Deck OLED and 80Wh for the Ally X. Capacity is not the same as play time: Valve lists 3–12 hours for the Deck OLED depending on content, while ASUS does not provide a directly comparable runtime on its cited Ally X specifications page. The available figures do not establish which lasts longer in the same game and conditions.
What do weight, controls, and ports mean in daily use?
Valve lists the Deck OLED at approximately 640g and the Ally X at 678g, a difference of about 38g in the published figures. Weight alone does not determine comfort. The Deck OLED includes two trackpads that can help with mouse-like input or configurable menus; ASUS does not list trackpads for the Ally X. Both list gyro and two assignable grip buttons.
For external devices, the Ally X lists two USB-C ports, including USB4 with Thunderbolt 4 compliance and DisplayPort 1.4 support. The Deck OLED lists USB-C with DisplayPort and USB 3 Gen 2. These specifications do not verify compatibility with a particular dock or peripheral, so check the accessory requirements if a specific setup matters.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Steam Deck OLED if
- You want an OLED display and prefer its 7.4-inch panel.
- You value SteamOS, trackpads, or Valve’s advertised suspend-and-resume behavior.
- You prefer the lower listed weight.
Valve describes the Deck OLED as suspending a game when you press the power button and waking back to where you left off when you press it again. That is Valve’s advertised behavior, not a guarantee about every game or situation. Details are on Valve’s Steam Deck OLED product page.
