You install it from Desktop Mode, then launch it from the Steam Library in Gaming Mode. The app streams supported games from a cloud PC rather than running them locally on the Deck.
What the native app supports
NVIDIA’s May 29, 2025 announcement says the app can stream games at up to 4K at 60 frames per second when the Steam Deck is connected to a TV. NVIDIA also lists HDR10, DLSS 4 and Reflex for supported titles. Those are capability ceilings, not guarantees for every game, display or network.

NVIDIA’s launch figures were 2,200+ supported games and 180+ supported PC Game Pass titles, spanning Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft, Battle.net and Xbox libraries. Those counts are dated NVIDIA figures from 2025, not verified 2026 catalog totals; availability also depends on the store account you link and whether a particular game is supported.

How to install GeForce NOW on Steam Deck
NVIDIA’s current download page provides the Steam Deck setup path. The process begins in Desktop Mode and ends with a launcher in your Steam Library.

- Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam menu, choose Power, then select Switch to Desktop.
- Open NVIDIA’s download page on the Deck: Download GeForce NOW.
- Download the Steam Deck package. NVIDIA supplies a script rather than a conventional app-store package.
- Extract the download. Use the desktop file manager’s extract option if the download is compressed.
- Run the setup file. Execute the supplied installer script and follow its prompts. You may need to mark the file as executable in its Properties or choose the file manager’s run option.
- Return to Gaming Mode. NVIDIA says the installation adds GeForce NOW to the Steam Library, where it can be launched like other library entries.
These are NVIDIA’s documented steps; the exact desktop prompts can vary with SteamOS and the file manager version installed on your Deck.
Network requirements that determine stream quality
Cloud gaming moves the game’s rendering to NVIDIA’s data center, so bandwidth and latency matter more than the Deck’s local graphics performance. NVIDIA publishes these targets:

NVIDIA specifies latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center and recommends wired Ethernet or a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router. These figures are targets, not a promise of stutter-free play: interference, congestion, distance to the data center, packet loss and other household traffic can all affect the result. Which membership tier is needed?
NVIDIA says an Ultimate membership is required for features such as 1440p and 90/120 FPS on a supported device. The app itself is available on the Deck, but the resolution and frame-rate options you can use depend on your membership, the game, the connected display and the device support listed by NVIDIA.

Steam Deck local play versus GeForce NOW streaming
Neither approach is universally better. Use these checks for each game and situation:
- Game access: local play requires a Deck-compatible installation; GeForce NOW requires the game to be supported and owned or available through a linked store or supported PC Game Pass access.
- Connection: local play continues without an internet connection after installation; streaming quality follows your bandwidth, latency and Wi-Fi or Ethernet conditions.
- Image and frame rate: GeForce NOW can provide higher settings than the Deck can render locally, but only within the supported game, tier, display and network limits.
- Portability: local play is predictable away from a network. Streaming is most compelling where you have a reliable connection, including a TV setup.
- Battery: NVIDIA claims up to 50% longer battery life when streaming from a cloud RTX rig. Treat that as a vendor claim, not a guaranteed runtime for every Deck, game or network.
TV play and the role of a dock
NVIDIA’s 4K/60 description specifically refers to a Deck connected to a TV. A Steam Deck dock is therefore an optional way to connect the handheld to a television and peripherals; it is not required to install or use GeForce NOW on the Deck. NVIDIA’s announcement does not endorse a particular dock. For TV use, also consider whether your network setup can use the recommended wired Ethernet connection or a nearby 5 GHz router.

What changed in 2026?
The important correction is timing: native Steam Deck support is an existing feature, not an upcoming release. NVIDIA’s August 27, 2026 update discusses later Steam Machine and Controller support in the context of GeForce NOW’s broader device support, while the Steam Deck app had already launched in 2025.
