No—the reported “Gainsborough” APU is not confirmed as the Steam Deck 2 chip. Two artifacts have drawn attention: the codename appeared in files shipped with AMD Software Adrenalin 26.9.2 on September 29, 2026, and a leaker connected it with an unfamiliar FF6 socket designation in a shipping manifest. Those clues are real reported observations, but neither Valve nor AMD has identified Gainsborough as a Steam Deck component. Claims about Zen 6c CPU cores, RDNA 5 graphics, a 3 nm process and a 2027–2028 arrival remain leak claims.

What did the Steam Deck 2 leak actually reveal?

The strongest evidence is a codename and a socket reference, not a product announcement. Digital Citizen reported that “Gainsborough” was present in AMD Software Adrenalin 26.9.2 files released on September 29, 2026. Separately, a leaker associated the name with an FF6 socket designation seen in a shipping manifest.

That combination suggests AMD is working on an as-yet-unidentified platform, but it does not establish that Valve selected it. The files do not provide a Steam Deck product name, retail specifications, price or launch date.

Is Gainsborough really the Steam Deck 2 APU?

There is no public confirmation from Valve or AMD. The name attracted attention because “Aerith” is an informal hardware-community codename for the current Deck APU, and Aerith Gainsborough is a character from Final Fantasy VII. That is circumstantial wordplay, not evidence of a Valve design win; Valve’s official specification page does not publish the Aerith codename.

Valve has also rejected earlier assumptions based on shipping or presentation material. When an “Aerith Plus” manifest rumor circulated, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais replied, “Not happening.” Valve separately said there is and will be no Ryzen Z2 Steam Deck, after an AMD presentation was mistaken for a specific Valve announcement. Those precedents are why Gainsborough should be treated as unverified.

What specifications are being claimed for the leaked APU?

Leak coverage describes a possible configuration, but none of these figures is an announced Steam Deck specification. Digital Citizen attributed the following ranges to leak channels, while TechRadar described a separate engineering-sample listing.

Item Reported Gainsborough information Confidence and source context
CPU Four to eight Zen 6c cores Unverified range reported by Digital Citizen
GPU 12 to 24 claimed RDNA 5 compute units Unverified range; RDNA 5 is not an AMD-announced architecture
Manufacturing process TSMC N3P (3 nm) Leak claim, not confirmed by AMD or Valve
Engineering-sample CPU Six cores, 12 threads, 2.4 GHz base clock Listing reported by TechRadar; sample specifications can change
Test memory 24 GB Reported by TechRadar for the engineering sample, not a retail configuration
Power, battery and price Leak reports give no figures No public Valve or AMD specification establishes them
Timing Late 2027 or 2028 suggested as the earliest arrival Digital Citizen’s leak-based estimate, not a release window

The RDNA 5 label deserves particular caution. Digital Citizen noted that AMD’s public architecture material stops at RDNA 4, so “RDNA 5” currently describes a rumor rather than a confirmed product family.

What has Valve said about a Steam Deck successor?

Valve has confirmed that successor work is continuing. In April 2026, Griffais told VGC, “We’re hard at work on it.” He gave no release date, and VGC reported that Valve was dealing with memory and component-supply constraints.

Valve’s stated performance requirement is also higher than a routine refresh. Griffais said, “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life. We want something a little bit more demarcated than that.” He added that no available system-on-chip met that bar at the time. This explains why Valve has not simply announced the first faster mobile AMD part: the company is targeting a clearly larger efficiency-conscious generation step.

How does the rumor compare with the official Steam Deck OLED?

The Steam Deck OLED is the current confirmed baseline. Valve lists a 6 nm AMD APU with a Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread CPU, eight RDNA 2 compute units, 4–15 W APU power, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, a 50 Wh battery and 3–12 hours of gameplay. It is sold in 512 GB and 1 TB OLED configurations.

Comparison point Steam Deck OLED (Valve specification) Gainsborough report
CPU architecture Zen 2, 4 cores/8 threads Zen 6c, 4–8 cores claimed
GPU architecture RDNA 2, 8 compute units RDNA 5, 12–24 compute units claimed
Process node 6 nm TSMC N3P 3 nm claimed
APU power 4–15 W No figure reported
Memory 16 GB LPDDR5 24 GB appears in one engineering-sample report; retail capacity and memory type are unconfirmed
Battery and play time 50 Wh; 3–12 hours listed by Valve No battery or play-time figure reported
Product status Official shipping model Unannounced platform; Steam Deck association unconfirmed

The table shows why the leak is intriguing, but it should not be read as a final Steam Deck 2 specification sheet. Core counts, graphics units, memory and power limits can all change before a product reaches production.

Do the leaked benchmark numbers prove a faster Steam Deck 2?

No. TechRadar reported 3,508 FurMark points at 1024×768 for the alleged sample, compared with 3,323 for a Steam Deck result at 1280×800. Those tests used different resolutions, and the sample reportedly ran unfinished drivers. Because a lower resolution requires less rendering work, the scores cannot establish a final performance advantage or predict retail game frame rates.

The listing is still a useful sign that an engineering sample may exist, but it is not a controlled, like-for-like benchmark. Clock behavior, cooling, memory bandwidth, firmware and driver maturity would all affect a finished handheld.

When is Steam Deck 2 coming out?

Valve has announced no release date or release window. Late 2027 or 2028 is an estimate attached to the Gainsborough leak, not a Valve schedule. Supply constraints mentioned by VGC add uncertainty, and the company’s requirement for a substantial performance-per-watt improvement could delay a launch until the appropriate silicon is available.

Readers should therefore separate two statements: Valve is actively developing a successor, while the timing and identity of its chip remain unknown.

Should you buy a Steam Deck OLED or wait?

The Steam Deck OLED is the only officially specified current model. It is the practical choice if you want a supported handheld now and its 6 nm Zen 2/RDNA 2 performance, 16 GB memory and 50 Wh battery meet your needs. Waiting makes sense only if you can tolerate an open-ended timeline and accept that Gainsborough may belong to another AMD project—or may change before any launch.

Do not buy an OLED expecting a hidden Gainsborough upgrade: Valve’s published OLED specifications identify the existing APU, and no public announcement connects that model to the leak.

What would confirm the Gainsborough story?

Any one of the following would materially raise confidence:

  • Valve or AMD explicitly identifying Gainsborough as a Steam Deck component.
  • A Valve specification page naming the CPU, GPU architecture, process, memory and power limits.
  • A product announcement with a model name, launch timing and retail configuration.
  • Comparable independent benchmarks from a finalized device using matching resolutions, drivers and power settings.

Until then, the driver string and FF6 manifest reference are leads, not proof that Gainsborough is the Steam Deck 2 APU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 3 nm process guarantee longer battery life for Steam Deck 2?

No. A smaller process can improve transistor efficiency, but battery life also depends on clock speeds, voltage targets, memory subsystem, cooling and the handheld’s software power management. Valve’s requirement is a system-level gain at similar battery life, not a node-size promise by itself.

Why do the two FurMark resolutions make the leaked scores hard to compare?

The reported sample used 1024×768 while the comparison Steam Deck result used 1280×800. The latter drives more pixels, so the different workloads prevent the scores from showing a clean generation-to-generation advantage.

Could Gainsborough be an AMD chip for a device other than Steam Deck 2?

Yes. The reported artifacts identify a codename and an FF6 socket reference, but neither names Valve or a handheld. Without an explicit company identification, the chip’s intended product remains open.

Is RDNA 5 an official AMD graphics architecture yet?

No public AMD architecture announcement establishes RDNA 5 in the available reporting. The label appears in leak coverage, while AMD’s public architecture material was reported as stopping at RDNA 4, so any RDNA 5 specification should be treated as provisional.
