AMD’s “Gainsborough” codename has reportedly surfaced in driver material, prompting speculation that it could be tied to a future Steam Deck. Reports attribute Zen 6 CPU cores, RDNA 5 graphics and a TSMC N3P process to the chip, but neither AMD nor Valve has confirmed that Gainsborough is a Steam Deck 2 APU—or announced a successor’s specifications or release date.
Is Gainsborough the Steam Deck 2 chip?
That connection is possible, not established. Recent reports say the name “Gainsborough” appeared in AMD driver material, while separate reporting associates it with a shipping-manifest package designation. Those clues do not identify the customer or device. The proposed link to Valve partly rests on naming: “Aerith” and “Sephiroth” have been reported as names associated with current Steam Deck APUs, and Aerith Gainsborough is a character in Final Fantasy VII. That is circumstantial evidence, not confirmation. Digital Citizen’s analysis and Hardware Busters’ report describe the clues and their limits.
AMD has documented a partnership with Valve to create a semi-custom APU for the current Steam Deck, but that does not verify Gainsborough’s identity. AMD’s SEC filing establishes the current-generation partnership, not a future product.
What the Gainsborough leak claims
Reports attribute the following possible specifications to the chip. They are leak claims, not confirmed product details.

| Item | Reported claim | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| CPU architecture | Zen 6; one report estimates four to eight Zen 6C-class cores. | No official configuration. The estimate is attributed to leak coverage, including PC Gamer and Hardware Busters. |
| Graphics | RDNA 5; one report estimates 12–24 compute units. | Neither the architecture nor unit count is confirmed. The reviewed reporting does not establish RDNA 5 as an officially announced, released AMD graphics architecture. |
| Manufacturing process | TSMC N3P. | Leak claim; no official confirmation. |
| Memory and power | Not stated in the cited leak reports. | No confirmed memory configuration or power envelope. |
| Price and release | Not stated as confirmed. | No official product name, price or launch window. A reported late-2027 or early-2028 chip-readiness estimate is a leaker’s estimate, not a Valve release date. |
Digital Citizen notes that the AMD graphics page it reviewed stopped at RDNA 4. That makes “RDNA 5” especially important to treat as a rumor rather than a settled specification.
How the rumor compares with the current Steam Deck
Valve’s official pages provide a useful baseline for the existing device—not a prediction of its successor. The current Steam Deck uses a custom AMD APU, and Valve lists these specifications on its technical specifications page.

The current-device figures are Valve’s published specifications, not independent performance-test results. They should not be read as specifications for a future Deck.
What Valve has said about a successor
Valve has not published a Steam Deck 2 specification, product name, price or launch window in the sources reviewed. Digital Citizen reports that Steam Deck designer Lawrence Yang described Valve’s approach as “not doing the yearly cadence” and said it would not “do a bump every year.” It also attributes to Yang the threshold of “a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life.” These are reported remarks, not a successor announcement.

That reported threshold helps explain why a newer chip alone would not establish what a future Deck will deliver. A handheld’s performance needs to be considered alongside its power use and battery life; the leak coverage does not provide a confirmed power envelope, memory configuration or measured performance for Gainsborough.

For the current Steam Deck, Valve documents microSD expansion on its hardware page. That is a current-device storage option only: no future model or accessory compatibility can be inferred from the rumor. There is not yet a confirmed Gainsborough-based product against which to assess upgrades or compatibility.
