How to choose a Steam Deck alternative
Start with the games you actually play and how you want to access them. Windows handhelds offer broad compatibility with PC game libraries, but they are still Windows PCs, so launcher setup and the interface can be less console-like. SteamOS and Windows should not be treated as interchangeable experiences; compare support for your launchers and games before choosing based on processor names alone.

What battery test results can—and can’t—tell you
Battery figures are meaningful only with their test conditions attached. PC Gamer’s 2026 PCMark 10 gaming battery comparison recorded 153 minutes for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM in default mode and 308 minutes in Endurance mode. The same comparison recorded 125 minutes for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X in default mode. These are results from that test, not expected runtime for every title, setting, or play session. - Check your game library: List the games and launchers you need, then verify that they work on the operating system of the exact handheld you’re considering.
- Decide your portability trade-off: Compare screen size and controls with weight and bulk. The Legion Go’s large display and detachable controllers are appealing if you do not need the smallest travel setup.
- Set a price ceiling: Compare current local prices for the exact configuration, not just a product family. The ASUS figure above is from its US page on 4 October 2026; PC Gamer’s MSI figure is about $1,800 in its review.
- Judge battery claims by the conditions: Favor tests that name the device, mode, and method, and treat them as comparisons rather than guarantees.
- Check regional support: Confirm stock, warranty, and service options in your country before ordering.
If a large display and kickstand matter most, start with the Legion Go. If broad Windows compatibility and a premium setup are your priority, compare the ROG Ally X with the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026), checking the exact configuration and price. If you are focused on performance and comfortable with a very high price, consider the MSI Claw—but weigh its software-menu criticisms as well as its measured battery modes.
