If your new job in Ireland coincides with a home move, handle payroll and household setup as two connected but separate tasks. The key payroll question is whether this is your first job in Ireland: register a first job through Revenue’s Jobs and Pensions service; for a later job, your employer registers it. Meanwhile, coordinate utilities, address updates and any relocation reimbursement with your employer.
Before you move: confirm work and payroll details
Ask your employer about onboarding and relocation costs
Confirm your start date, what information HR needs, and how payroll will be set up. Ask whether the employer will pay removal costs directly or reimburse expenses you pay yourself. Keep invoices and receipts, and do not assume an amount is tax-free just because it is described as a relocation allowance.
Revenue allows tax-free reimbursement of qualifying removal and relocation expenses when the move is necessary to take up employment or move to a new employment location. Expenses must be actual, reasonable, properly controlled, and a direct result of changing residence. Potentially covered costs include removal of belongings, storage, transit or storage insurance, cleaning stored furniture, travel connected with the removal, and certain property transaction expenses. Revenue’s relocation guidance sets out the conditions and record-keeping requirements.
Temporary accommodation and subsistence have separate conditions. Disturbance money is treated as salary, while house-purchase capital costs and bridging-loan interest are excluded. Check each proposed expense against Revenue’s rules rather than treating all moving-related payments alike.

If you are arriving from abroad
Revenue says people who have just moved to Ireland to start work will need to apply for a PPS number. Check the current application instructions and your individual circumstances through Revenue’s guidance for people moving to Ireland for work.
If you hold an employment permit and are changing employer, check the conditions attached to your permit before making the change. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment says holders of their first employment permit are generally expected to stay in that employment for nine months, subject to exceptions and permit-specific rules. This does not apply as a blanket rule to every worker or every permit. See the department’s changing-employer guidance.
Choose how to move and set up household services
Self-move or professional removal firm
Compare the total cost, timing and physical effort of doing the move yourself with hiring a removal firm. Check your home and contents policy for cover while belongings are in transit; cover may depend on using professional movers. A removal firm may offer insurance, but read the actual terms rather than assuming your goods are covered either way. Citizens Information’s moving-home guide covers insurance and other household arrangements.
Transfer broadband and other utilities
Contact electricity, gas, waste, telephone, broadband and TV providers early. Ask whether your current service is available at the new Eircode, whether it can be transferred, when it can be activated, and whether fees or contract changes apply. Coverage and connection timing depend on location. Citizens Information suggests giving telecom providers at least one month’s notice where possible.

Decide whether transferring your existing service or arranging a new one best fits your move date and contract. If you work remotely, confirm that internet service will be active at the new address before relying on it for work.
Plan address changes and mail
Mail redirection can help catch post sent to your old home, but it does not replace updating accounts directly. Citizens Information identifies Revenue, your employer, financial institutions, insurers, health professionals, motoring documents, schools and social welfare services as possible address-update contacts. Treat this as a prompt to check the accounts and services relevant to you, not a universal legal list.

On moving day and after taking possession
- Record final meter readings at the old home and initial readings at the new one. Photos can help preserve a record; confirm who is responsible for each account and settle outstanding charges with providers.
- Tell your employer your updated contact details, even if your salary is paid electronically.
- Update Revenue through online services where relevant, and notify social welfare services if you receive payments.
- Check that broadband is installed and working at the new address before planning remote work around it.
- Update relevant doctors and other health professionals, insurers, financial institutions, and motoring policies or documents.
Set up payroll: first job in Ireland or a later job?
If this is your first job in Ireland
Register it using Revenue’s Jobs and Pensions service. Revenue says the service requires your employer’s tax registration number, your job start date and your pay frequency. Follow the current steps in Revenue’s “Add a job or a pension” guidance.
If you are changing jobs in Ireland
Your new employer registers the job. Give them your PPS number and check your PAYE records and tax credits in myAccount if your payslip or tax treatment looks wrong. Registering a later job yourself is not the same process as registering your first job in Ireland. Citizens Information explains the distinction and why checking your details can help avoid emergency tax in its guide to tax, PRSI and pensions when changing job.
