Starfish Space’s Otter 24C launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare on October 1, 2026. Its NASA-backed SSPICY mission is expected to inspect up to four inoperable U.S.-origin satellites in low Earth orbit, with inspections planned to begin in 2027. Otter has not yet demonstrated those inspection or servicing capabilities in orbit.
What is Starfish Otter?
Otter 24C is a satellite-servicing spacecraft built by Starfish Space. NASA identifies it as the vehicle Starfish will operate for SSPICY, short for Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability. It launched on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, at 11:32 a.m. PDT on October 1, 2026. NASA’s mission report describes the SSPICY objectives; Space.com’s launch coverage reports that Transporter-18 carried 130 payloads, deployed over roughly 11 minutes.
What is the SSPICY mission?
SSPICY is a technology demonstration and data-gathering mission. NASA says Otter is intended to approach and inspect as many as four inoperable U.S.-origin satellites in low Earth orbit. It will use propulsion and autonomous guidance, navigation, and control to get close to target objects and gather information about their surface condition, geometry, and orbital characteristics.
Technologies being tested
- An articulating robotic boom to direct thrust while maneuvering near target spacecraft.
- Computer-vision-based navigation software to support safe approaches.
- Propulsion and autonomous guidance, navigation, and control for approaching and inspecting orbital objects.
NASA’s stated goal is to help the agency and industry understand how spacecraft could inspect, service, or assist with disposal of objects in orbit. Those are future applications the demonstration may inform—not services Otter has already performed.

#1 Best Overall
- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- VOYAGER – 1.5 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 1.38 x 1.77 x 6.70 inches.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
Expected schedule and mission scope
In its October 1, 2026 report, NASA said inspections were expected to begin in 2027 and that SSPICY was expected to operate for about two years. These are plans, not confirmation that inspections have started or that the spacecraft will complete every planned activity.
What else launched on Transporter-18?
Transporter-18 carried 130 payloads, including three NASA-supported small spacecraft. Their purposes range from propulsion and astrophysics research to commercial technology demonstrations.

| Payload | Organization or mission | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Otter 24C | Starfish Space; NASA’s SSPICY mission | Technology demonstration intended to inspect up to four inoperable U.S.-origin satellites in low Earth orbit. |
| ASCENT Propulsion Dual Mode | NASA-supported small spacecraft | Demonstrate chemical and electrospray propulsion using one propellant supply. |
| SPRITE | NASA-supported astrophysics CubeSat | Study ultraviolet light from star-forming regions and stellar remnants. |
| Project Suncatcher pathfinder | Test tensor processing units under space-radiation and thermal conditions. It is a technology pathfinder, not an operational orbital data center. | |
| Reason-1 | Cowboy Space | Demonstrate power beaming. |
The payloads represent different kinds of work: Otter is focused on satellite inspection, SPRITE on astrophysics, ASCENT on propulsion, and Reason-1 on power-beaming technology. Project Suncatcher is testing hardware performance in the space environment rather than providing an operational computing service.

The launch puts Starfish Space’s spacecraft in orbit to attempt a commercial inspection mission. The next meaningful milestone is whether Otter can safely approach and collect useful information about its targets. Starfish co-founder Trevor Bennett described success as providing inspection service on multiple spacecraft, while noting the possibility of further inspection or docking beyond the initial mission. GeekWire’s interview with Bennett presents those as ambitions, not completed results.

Starfish said before launch that the mission marked a significant step after years developing and testing technologies for satellite servicing. The company’s statement, reported by Space.com, appeared on X on September 24, 2026. A successful launch is an important start, but it is distinct from proving that Otter can inspect, dock with, service, or dispose of another satellite.
