Stardock opened the public beta of WindowBlinds 11 on September 28, 2022, describing it as compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. The beta let users reskin interface elements such as the Start menu, taskbar, window frames and control buttons, while adding automatic dark mode, improved high-DPI support, an in-app skin browser, taskbar widget support and File Explorer tab support. Stardock released the finished WindowBlinds 11 on November 30, 2022, so this announcement is historical rather than a current-release notice.

What is WindowBlinds 11?

WindowBlinds 11 is Stardock’s Windows skinning utility. It applies downloadable themes, called skins, to parts of the desktop interface. Users can also adjust fonts, colors and transparency, then save customized presets.

Stardock’s later full-release materials described a refreshed interface and several included skins, including a Luna theme intended to give Windows 11 an appearance reminiscent of Windows XP.

Does WindowBlinds 11 work with Windows 11?

Yes, according to Stardock’s September 2022 beta announcement, which said the software supported Windows 10 and all announced Windows 11 versions. That was the vendor’s compatibility claim, not the result of independent testing. Stardock’s current product page, accessed September 27, 2026, lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as system requirements.

Stardock’s October 2022 setup guide also warned that Microsoft changes Windows 11 frequently and recommended release builds rather than Windows Insider channels. That guidance dates from 2022; it should not be read as certification for every later Windows build.

What did the WindowBlinds 11 beta add?

Automatic dark mode

The beta added an automatic dark-mode option. Stardock vice president Brad Sams called it one of the highly requested updates in the announcement.

Improved high-DPI support

New skins received improved support for high-DPI displays, addressing the scaling concerns that can make older desktop themes look soft or misaligned on modern screens.

In-app skin marketplace and browser

Users could browse community skins from inside the application instead of finding every theme separately. The getting-started guide says users can select skins, choose substyles, modify them and save presets.

Taskbar widgets and File Explorer tabs

Stardock listed support for taskbar widgets and File Explorer tabs among the beta additions. These were features Stardock said WindowBlinds 11 supported; the reviewed announcement does not provide independent compatibility testing for individual Windows builds.

Which Windows areas can it skin?

  • Start menu and other desktop interface elements
  • Taskbar appearance, including support for taskbar widgets announced for the beta
  • Window frames and control buttons
  • Fonts, colors and transparency settings
  • File Explorer-related styling, with support for the tabbed Explorer feature announced in the beta

Start menu skinning has an important qualification: Stardock’s current product page says it requires the separate Start11 utility.

How do you set up a skin?

  1. Open WindowBlinds 11 and select a skin from the available themes or the in-app community browser.
  2. Choose a substyle when the skin offers alternatives.
  3. Use the modification controls to change fonts, colors or transparency.
  4. Save the result as a preset if you want to reuse the customized settings.
  5. Use the per-application controls when a particular program needs different treatment.

Stardock’s guide notes that some applications, including Chrome and Edge, may require extra steps before they accept a skin. The exact behavior can depend on the application and its updates.

Should you use it on an Insider build?

Stardock’s own 2022 getting-started guidance recommends a normal Windows release build instead of an Insider channel because Microsoft changes preview builds frequently. Anyone using an Insider build should therefore expect a greater possibility of skin or compatibility issues and avoid treating the beta announcement as a guarantee of support.

What the announcement means today

The September 28, 2022 announcement marked the public testing phase of WindowBlinds 11. It established Stardock’s intended Windows 10/11 compatibility and the feature set it planned for the beta. The product moved to a full release on November 30, 2022, and current users should check Stardock’s live requirements and trial information rather than rely on the beta’s dated prices or compatibility wording.
