If Stardew Valley is stuttering, a save has gone missing, or a friend cannot join your farm, use the troubleshooting path for that specific problem: isolate mods and graphics settings for lag, back up files before attempting save recovery, and confirm the host opened the farm through Co-op for multiplayer. Stardew Valley—not a separate official D&D crossover—is covered here, including its performance, saves, and multiplayer systems.

Platform matters. The documented PC troubleshooting guidance refers to Stardew Valley 1.6.15 or later, while multiplayer features, player limits, save locations, and online requirements can vary by platform.

Why is Stardew Valley lagging or stuttering?

Start by checking the game and mod versions, then isolate the cause before changing several settings at once. The documented PC troubleshooting guide specifies Stardew Valley 1.6.15 or later and recommends updating SMAPI and every installed mod.

1. Check versions and look for repeating mod errors

If you use SMAPI, update it and your mods to versions compatible with your game. Watch the SMAPI console for errors that repeat; a recurring error can point to a mod that is misbehaving or incompatible. A game update can also leave a mod behind on an older version.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Temporarily test with only essential mods

For a clean isolation check, temporarily move nonessential mods out of the Mods folder, leaving only SMAPI and Error Handler. If the stutter stops, restore mods in small groups or one at a time until the problem returns. That narrows the cause without requiring a full reinstall or guessing which mod is responsible.

Large expansion and content-pack mods can use substantial memory. If the game reports OutOfMemoryException, pay particular attention to content packs associated with Custom Music, SAAT, or TMXL Map Toolkit, which the troubleshooting guidance flags as possible memory consumers. Removing or reducing the relevant content may help; this is a memory issue to investigate, not proof that every large mod is faulty.

3. Check graphics and antivirus settings on Windows

  • Use the dedicated GPU: If the computer has both integrated and dedicated graphics, check that Stardew Valley is assigned to the dedicated graphics card.
  • Update graphics drivers: An outdated or problematic driver can contribute to rendering issues.
  • Check NVIDIA WhisperMode: Disable it temporarily if it is enabled, then see whether performance changes.
  • Check antivirus interference: Windows Defender or another antivirus can cause lag. The guide recommends adding the Stardew Valley folder to antivirus exclusions. If you temporarily disable protection to identify a conflict, restore it afterward and use a targeted exception instead.
  • Launch the Steam copy through Steam: If you own the Steam version, test by starting it from the Steam client rather than a separate shortcut.

4. Apply Linux and Steam Deck guidance only on those systems

Two documented checks are specific to Linux or Steam Deck. First, inspect ListenForConsoleInput in smapi-internal/config.json. Second, if fullscreen performance is much worse than windowed performance, the troubleshooting guide describes a bundled SDL workaround. These are not general Windows fixes; follow platform-specific instructions rather than changing unrelated settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Change one thing at a time

After each change, launch the game and check whether the stutter remains. If it returns after restoring a particular mod or group, focus there. If it persists with only the essential mods, return attention to the game version, graphics configuration, drivers, antivirus, and—on the relevant systems—the Linux or Steam Deck settings. Save recovery is a separate process and is not a performance fix.

When does Stardew Valley save, and what progress can disappear?

Stardew Valley saves when the in-game day ends: when the farmer goes to bed, collapses from exhaustion, or reaches 2 a.m. Quitting before the day ends loses that day’s progress, so a session that appears to have saved mid-day may not have a recoverable end-of-day save.

In multiplayer, the save is held on the host’s system. At the end of a day, all players must click through their end-of-day prompts; saving completes after everyone has done so and the players wake up. If someone quits before that process finishes, the day’s progress may not be saved.

A farmhand cannot independently load the shared world when the host is offline or has not opened the farm to players. If you are the host, make sure the farm is open and the day’s save has completed before diagnosing a farmhand’s missing access as a lost save.

How do I recover a missing or older Stardew Valley save?

Do not start by renaming, replacing, or deleting files in the active save folder. First make a separate copy of the entire save folder somewhere outside the active Saves directory. Then work through the checks below, changing only a copy when possible.

1. Find the save folder

Common default locations are:

  • Windows: %appdata%StardewValleySaves
  • Linux and macOS: ~/.config/StardewValley/Saves

Installations using Steam Flatpak, Heroic, or other configurations may store saves elsewhere. If the usual folder is empty, check the location used by that particular installation before assuming the save is gone.

2. Check for temporary filenames

Look for filenames containing _STARDEWVALLEYSAVETMP. If you find them, the documented recovery guidance is to remove that suffix and try loading the save again. If Steam Cloud keeps renaming the files, temporarily disable Steam Cloud while correcting the filenames. Preserve your backup, and avoid allowing cloud synchronization to overwrite the files you are trying to recover.

3. Confirm the folder and main file match

The save folder name should exactly match the main save file, which has a shape like FarmName_0123456789. A mismatch can prevent the game from recognizing the save. Check the names carefully before attempting a rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Try the documented _old rollback

After making a backup, look for the files ending in _old. The documented last-save rollback is to replace the current SaveGameInfo and farm file with their respective _old versions. This can restore a previous state, but it may also roll back progress, so keep the original folder intact and treat the operation as a recovery attempt rather than a guaranteed repair.

5. Consider a cloud copy replacing newer local progress

If newer progress vanished, Steam Cloud, GOG Galaxy, or an equivalent mobile service may have replaced the local save with an older cloud copy. The documented recovery sequence for this situation involves launching the game without loading the save, restoring the backup while the game is running, and then loading the save. Because cloud synchronization can overwrite files, retain a separate backup before attempting this sequence.

6. Check SMAPI’s save backups

If SMAPI is installed, inspect its save-backups folder. Its bundled SaveBackup mod keeps up to 10 daily backups. A suitable backup can be extracted and copied back into the normal Saves folder.

Keep backup folders outside the active Saves directory. Stardew Valley may try to treat folders inside it as saves, which can make the folder harder to manage and complicate recovery.

Why can’t my friend join my Stardew Valley farm?

The most common setup mistake is opening an existing farm through the ordinary Load menu. To let other players join, open it through Co-op, and make sure it has a cabin for each additional player.

Convert an existing single-player farm to co-op

  1. Build enough cabins for the additional players you want to host.
  2. Save and exit to the title screen.
  3. Choose Co-op, then open the existing farm from the co-op host options.

Using the normal Load menu starts the farm in single-player mode, even if cabins are already present. Having a cabin alone does not make the farm joinable.

Host a new multiplayer farm

  1. Choose Co-op from the title screen.
  2. Select Host.
  3. Add one cabin for each additional player you intend to accommodate.
  4. Use the connection method supported by your platform to invite or admit the other players.

Check a blocked connection in this order

  1. Confirm the host opened the correct farm through Co-op. The host should select the farm as a co-op host, not launch it with ordinary Load.
  2. Count the cabins. There must be enough cabins for the additional players.
  3. Check server mode. Set it to Online where that setting applies.
  4. Reset content files. Each player should reset content files. If needed, delete startup_preferences from the documented Stardew Valley configuration folder.
  5. Use the game client or launcher. Have everyone launch through Steam or GOG Galaxy rather than through a separate shortcut.
  6. Check firewall and antivirus interference. The guide suggests a temporary test with them disabled. If that identifies the cause, restore protection and add a targeted exception instead of leaving security disabled.
  7. Restart the network path. Have all players restart their computers and routers.
  8. For modded farms, check compatibility. Players need compatible mod versions and matching protocol versions.

On PC, the documented join options include Steam friends, invite codes, split-screen, and IP address. IP joining may require an open firewall port or a virtual LAN service; the default server UDP port documented by the Stardew Valley Wiki is 24642. Do not open a port as a first step if an ordinary invite works, and use platform-appropriate network and security settings.

How do I start local split-screen co-op?

For local split-screen, connect a controller for each additional player. Build the needed cabins, then start local co-op from the in-game Options menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a farm or load one and build enough cabins for the additional players.
  2. Connect a controller for every additional local player. A USB game controller is an optional way to provide one; it is not a fix for online connection problems, save issues, or stutter.
  3. Open the in-game Options menu and choose Start Local Co-op.

If the additional players cannot join locally, verify that their controllers are connected and that the farm has enough cabins before troubleshooting internet settings. Local split-screen and remote multiplayer use different connection paths.

Which multiplayer limits and platform differences matter?

The Stardew Valley Wiki describes multiplayer for 1–8 players, but platform limits differ. It documents up to three cabins on most platforms and up to seven cabins on PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Treat those figures as platform-dependent ceilings, not a promise that every platform, edition, or connection mode supports the same group size.

Situation What to account for
Vanilla game Focus on the host’s co-op setup, cabins, server mode, platform connection method, and network or security settings.
Modded game Add SMAPI and mod updates, repeating console errors, compatible mod versions, matching protocol versions, and SaveBackup if installed.
Host The host’s system holds the multiplayer save. The host must open the farm for players to access it.
Farmhand A farmhand cannot open the shared world independently while the host is offline or the farm is closed.
Local co-op Build cabins and connect a controller for each additional local player.
Remote co-op Use a supported connection method; IP joining may involve firewall rules or a virtual LAN service.
Console or mobile Cross-platform availability, player limits, online-service requirements, save locations, and transfer procedures vary. Check the requirements for the specific platform and edition rather than assuming PC instructions apply.

Cross-platform play is restricted, and console online play may require the platform’s subscription service. The available guidance does not establish one universal cross-play combination or subscription requirement for every platform, so confirm the specific systems involved before troubleshooting the network.

How should I choose the right troubleshooting path?

Separate the symptom before changing files or settings. Lag and stutter call for version, mod, graphics, driver, antivirus, or platform-specific isolation. A missing save calls for backup-first file checks and careful rollback. A join failure calls for co-op setup, cabins, connection settings, platform compatibility, and—if modded—matching versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The game runs poorly: Update the game and mods, isolate nonessential mods, then check relevant graphics and security settings.
  • The latest day is missing: Remember that the game saves at day’s end; progress from an unfinished day may not exist in the save.
  • The save folder or file is missing: Back up first, locate the installation’s actual save directory, and inspect temporary filenames and matching names.
  • The farm loads but friends cannot join: Exit and reopen it through Co-op, confirm cabins, then work through the connection checklist.
  • A farmhand cannot access the farm when the host is away: This is expected for a host-held multiplayer save; the host must open the farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer my Stardew Valley save from one platform to another?

Save-transfer procedures vary by platform, and the documented guidance does not establish a universal transfer method. Before moving a save, make a separate copy and check instructions for the specific source and destination platforms.

Does a Stardew Valley multiplayer farm belong to the farmhand too?

The multiplayer save is stored on the host’s system. A farmhand’s access to that shared world depends on the host opening the farm; the farmhand cannot independently load it while the host is offline.

Can I keep playing a multiplayer character if the host is offline?

The documented multiplayer setup ties access to the host’s save and an open farm. It does not describe a way for a farmhand to open that shared world as a standalone save when the host is unavailable.
