As of October 3, 2026, play Star Wars: Episode I: Racer now if you want classic podracing from The Phantom Menace; wait for Star Wars: Galactic Racer if you want a newer, broader racing game built around several vehicle classes and a campaign. Galactic Racer is scheduled to launch October 6, 2026, so it is still upcoming at this comparison’s cutoff. The better choice depends on whether you want familiar podracing today or a new racing experience after launch.

What makes Episode I: Racer the better choice?

Choose it for focused Phantom Menace podracing

Episode I: Racer is the straightforward recommendation if you want the podracing fantasy associated with The Phantom Menace, rather than a wider collection of Star Wars racing vehicles. Lucasfilm’s 2020 announcement lists 25 playable racers and tracks across eight unique worlds. The game also includes pit-droid upgrades that improve top speed and acceleration, along with shortcuts and secrets to discover on courses. Lucasfilm’s Switch and PS4 announcement

Choose it for local multiplayer on its announced modern releases

The same announcement specifies split-screen multiplayer for Switch and PS4, plus LAN multiplayer on Switch. If playing beside someone on the same screen is a deciding factor, that is a concrete feature documented for these editions—not a feature to assume for Galactic Racer.

What the PS4 version adds

A 2020 post by Aspyr product director Chris Bashaar says the PS4 release remapped controls for DualShock 4, uprezzed FMV sequences, and added trophies. Bashaar also described racers exceeding 600 MPH; that is the developer’s promotional description, not an independently measured performance figure. Aspyr’s PS4 release post

What makes Galactic Racer worth waiting for?

It expands beyond podracers

Galactic Racer is announced as a new racing league on Jakku and other locations, with a story centered on Shade, a racer pursuing glory and revenge. Its revealed vehicle classes include landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders, and podracers. Named locations include Sentinel One, Jakku, Ando Prime, and Lantaana. These are official feature descriptions, not judgments based on playing the finished game. StarWars.com’s gameplay-trailer announcement

Its advertised structure centers on choices and runs

Lucasfilm’s reveal describes a solo campaign and multiplayer, with meaningful decisions about vehicles, upgrades, and events. Fuse Games co-founder Matt Webster says the game draws inspiration from runs-based games and describes choosing a starting vehicle, build, and events. Steam describes a story-driven campaign and runs-based play, and lists online PvP and cross-platform multiplayer features. Those listings explain the intended structure; they do not establish how the finished game performs or how its systems feel in practice. Steam listing for Star Wars: Galactic Racer

Its launch date and platforms matter

Galactic Racer is scheduled for October 6, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. At the October 3 cutoff, that date is still in the future. If you intend to play on a Switch or PS4, the cited announcement does not list Galactic Racer for either platform. Likewise, Steam’s online multiplayer listing does not confirm split-screen or LAN play.

Which Star Wars racing game should I play?

  • Pick Episode I: Racer if you want a playable-now game centered on The Phantom Menace podracing, its listed roster and worlds, or documented split-screen and Switch LAN modes.
  • Wait for Galactic Racer if you want multiple repulsorcraft types, a Shade-led campaign, runs-based choices, or online PvP—and can wait until its scheduled October 6, 2026 launch.
  • Choose by platform: the modern editions established here are Switch and PS4 for Episode I: Racer, and PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for Galactic Racer.

Lucasfilm Games executive producer Craig Derrick described the new game’s goal as “cinematic, skill-driven, and unmistakably Star Wars.” That is the studio’s stated ambition, not an independent assessment of the finished release. StarWars.com’s gameplay-trailer announcement

Physical editions of Galactic Racer

The official site describes physical Standard and Deluxe editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as a physical Collector’s Edition with a metal landspeeder model, banner, pilot patches, printed art book, and steel case. This establishes the editions described by the publisher, but not current retail stock or pricing. Official Star Wars: Galactic Racer site
