Star Wars: Episode I: Racer is a podracing game built around the race from The Phantom Menace; Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an upcoming Outer Rim racing game with several kinds of craft and a character-led story. The announced details show a difference in setting and scope, but they do not establish how the new game will handle or compare in quality.
Are Galactic Racer and Episode I: Racer the same kind of game?
Both are Star Wars racing games, but they start from different premises. Episode I: Racer recreates and expands on the podracing featured in The Phantom Menace. Galactic Racer takes place in an unsanctioned racing league in the Outer Rim, with a story involving Shade, Darius Pax, and Kestar Bool. Lucasfilm’s announcement presents it as a new expression of Star Wars racing, not as a direct sequel to Episode I: Racer.[1][2]
How do their vehicles and racing scope differ?
Episode I: Racer focuses on podracers
The classic game is centered on podracing. Its rerelease announcement lists 25 playable racers and tracks across eight worlds. Races also involve hazards and shortcuts, so learning a course matters alongside improving a racer’s performance.[3]
Galactic Racer includes several craft types
Galactic Racer is announced with podracers as well as landspeeders, skim speeders, and speeder bikes. Its gameplay announcement describes earning parts, tools, and upgrades. The official material cited here does not give a final vehicle count or track count, so those figures cannot yet be compared with Episode I: Racer.[2]

What do we know about progression and multiplayer?
Episode I: Racer lets players upgrade speed and acceleration with pit-droid help, and its courses include shortcuts to master. The modern Switch and PS4 rerelease supports split-screen; the Switch announcement also lists LAN multiplayer.[3]
Galactic Racer’s official gameplay material says racers earn parts, tools, and upgrades. Its editions page refers to online multiplayer cosmetics, but that wording does not establish specific multiplayer modes, player counts, cross-play, or local play. Those details should not be assumed from the cosmetics reference alone.[2][4]

- Choose Episode I: Racer if you want the established podracing game, its eight-world course spread, racer upgrades, shortcuts, or documented split-screen play.
- Consider Galactic Racer if its Outer Rim league story and range of announced vehicle types appeal to you. It is scheduled for October 6, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; the announced features alone do not establish how it feels to play.
The comparison is currently clearest on premise, vehicles, and announced features. Handling, performance, overall quality, and value require evidence from the released game, so they cannot be fairly ranked against the older title here.
