Short answer: STALKER 2 does not document a switch that turns off or reduces the underlying A-Life simulation. In Update 2.1, released October 26, 2026, GSC Game World added presets for the distance at which A-Life NPCs are visualised. Open Settings — Game — Visualisation options and use Default, which GSC calls the safest choice for stability, or Dynamic, which automatically scales the range to what your PC or console can handle. Higher-range presets let you see A-Life NPCs farther away and may affect performance and stability. No official FPS gain is published for moving to a lower preset, so treat this as a visibility and stability adjustment, not a guaranteed performance fix.

Can you turn off or reduce A-Life in STALKER 2?

Not through a documented in-game control. Update 2.1 exposes an A-Life NPC visualisation range setting, but GSC describes it as controlling how far A-Life NPCs are shown, not as a master switch for simulation, population, spawning, or NPC activity.

That distinction matters. Returning the option to Default does not come with an official promise that the game will simulate fewer entities than its normal behavior. Likewise, choosing Dynamic does not disable A-Life; it lets the game adjust the visualisation range automatically.

GSC’s Update 2.1 showcase says the increased range primarily concerns A-Life NPCs and distinguishes those characters from quest or scripted NPCs. The number of presets can differ between PC and console versions, so another player’s menu may not contain exactly the same choices.

Where is the A-Life visualisation setting?

On a build that includes Update 2.1, use this path:

  1. Open Settings from the main menu or pause menu.
  2. Select Game.
  3. Open Visualisation options.
  4. Find the preset for A-Life NPC visualisation range.
  5. Choose Default or Dynamic, then apply the change if the game prompts you.

If the option is missing, first confirm that the game has Update 2.1 installed. Preset availability is platform-dependent, and an older build will not necessarily show the new menu.

Default

Default is GSC’s recommended stability choice. It uses the game’s standard visualisation behavior rather than extending the distance at which A-Life NPCs are displayed. GSC’s developer wording calls it “the safest bet for a stable run through the Zone.” That is a stability recommendation, not a measured FPS result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynamic

Dynamic automatically scales the visualisation range to the capability of the PC or console. It is the sensible alternative when you want the game to manage the trade-off instead of selecting a fixed range yourself. Dynamic still concerns visibility distance; it is not documented as a reduction in the simulation itself.

Higher-range presets

Higher settings increase the distance at which A-Life NPCs can be visualised. GSC warns that pushing the range higher may affect performance and stability. Because the available presets vary by platform, the highest option shown on one system may not appear on another.

Choice What it changes Developer guidance What it does not establish
Default Uses the standard A-Life NPC visualisation range Recommended as the safest stability choice It is not documented as reducing the underlying simulation below normal behavior
Dynamic Scales visualisation range automatically for the system Alternative when you want automatic adjustment It is not an A-Life disable switch or a guaranteed FPS mode
Higher range Shows A-Life NPCs farther away May affect performance and stability No official percentage or frame-rate penalty is provided

Does lowering the A-Life setting improve FPS?

There is no official per-preset FPS figure to quote. GSC documents a warning about the possible cost of higher visualisation ranges, but it does not publish a percentage uplift, frame-time comparison, or guaranteed frame-rate gain for switching to Default or Dynamic.

That means a lower choice can be a reasonable troubleshooting step, especially if an increased range was selected, but the result depends on the scene, hardware, platform, and current patch. Do not treat a change in smoothness at one location as a universal benchmark for every area of the Zone.

Keep the terminology precise when diagnosing a problem: reducing what is drawn or visualised at a distance may reduce some workload, but that does not prove that fewer NPCs are being simulated. The official material does not establish a below-default control for A-Life logic, spawning, or population.

What is the difference between A-Life visualisation range and Environment Draw Distance?

They are separate controls. GSC’s advanced graphics guide defines Environment Draw Distance as how far the environment itself is drawn. It does not say that lowering this setting reduces A-Life simulation or NPC spawning.

Environment Draw Distance can change the visibility of terrain, objects, and other world geometry. The A-Life option concerns the distance at which A-Life NPCs are visualised. Changing one should not be described as changing the other.

For rendering performance, GSC also documents resolution scale, shadows, global illumination, and reflections. Supported upscaling choices listed by the guide include TSR, AMD FSR 3.0, NVIDIA DLSS, and Intel XeSS. Those settings target rendering work; they are not evidence that the game is running a smaller A-Life simulation.

How should you troubleshoot a performance problem?

Use the following order so that you change one relevant factor at a time and do not confuse a rendering adjustment with an A-Life change.

  1. Check the visualisation preset. Open Settings — Game — Visualisation options. If an increased A-Life NPC range is selected, return to Default, GSC’s documented stability choice. Try Dynamic instead if you prefer automatic scaling. Compare the same location and circumstances after each change, and record what happened rather than assuming a universal FPS gain.
  2. Remove mod variables after an update. If the problem began after installing Update 2.1 or another game update, temporarily disable mods and reproduce the issue with the unmodified game. GSC’s Update 2.1 notes recommend disabling mods when performance or stability problems follow the update. Its Update 2.0 FAQ also warns that mods which have not been updated for a release can cause instability and performance issues.
  3. Check the PC against the published requirements. Confirm memory, processor, storage, and graphics hardware against GSC’s current PC requirements. Update the graphics driver, close unnecessary background processes, and use the graphics options documented by GSC. Lowering resolution scale or visual quality can reduce rendering load, but it does not demonstrate that A-Life has been reduced.
  4. Separate area-specific problems from global settings. If slowdowns occur only during a particular mission or in one location, read the current patch notes before blaming A-Life. Update 2.1 lists fixes for some NPC-spawn problems and location-specific performance drops. Those fixes address named cases; they do not prove that every slowdown of this type has been solved.

What hardware does GSC publish for PC?

GSC’s support page lists published configurations rather than benchmark results. The figures below describe requirements for the named presets and should not be read as a promise of a particular frame rate.

Published item GSC requirement How to interpret it
Low-settings memory 16 GB RAM Published capacity for the low configuration
High-settings memory 32 GB DDR4 dual-channel RAM Published capacity and memory configuration for high settings
Medium/high CPU listing AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-9700K Named processors in the medium and high configurations
Storage 160 GB free SSD space Required free capacity on an SSD
Graphics hardware Different requirements by preset Consult GSC’s complete table for the exact graphics card associated with your target preset

Meeting a requirement does not guarantee a particular FPS figure, and falling below it does not mean the A-Life option is the only cause of a slowdown. Check the complete configuration, including the graphics card and operating system, before changing hardware.

Should you buy hardware to fix an A-Life performance issue?

No purchase is required to access the documented setting. If a PC is below GSC’s published requirements, a compatible 32 GB DDR4 dual-channel memory kit is the most direct hardware consideration for the high-settings specification. A suitable SSD with enough free capacity or a CPU upgrade matching the published requirements are conditional alternatives, not universal fixes.

Verify the motherboard’s supported memory type, capacity, channel layout, processor socket, power supply, cooling, and storage interface before buying anything. None of these parts is an A-Life slider, and no upgrade comes with a guaranteed FPS improvement for this specific setting.

Why can the same setting behave differently after a patch?

A-Life behavior, NPC spawning, and area performance can change when the game code changes. Update 2.1 introduced the visualisation-range presets and also documented fixes for selected NPC-spawn and location-specific performance issues. A later patch can alter the available choices or their behavior, so recheck the current patch notes when a problem starts immediately after updating.

Mods add another variable. A mod that worked on an earlier release may interfere with the new menu or with performance systems until its author updates it. Reproducing the issue with mods disabled gives you a cleaner indication of whether the base game or a modification is responsible.

What can you conclude from the available evidence?

  • The documented control is an A-Life NPC visualisation range, not an on/off switch for A-Life simulation.
  • Default is GSC’s recommended stability preset; Dynamic scales the range automatically.
  • Higher range can affect performance and stability, but no official per-preset FPS statistic is available.
  • Environment Draw Distance, resolution scale, shadows, global illumination, reflections, and upscaling affect rendering and should not be described as A-Life controls.
  • Preset availability can differ between PC and console, and the menu requires the Update 2.1-era build.

For a current owner’s performance problem, the practical first move is to return an increased range to Default, test Dynamic if appropriate, remove outdated mods, and then work through hardware and graphics settings. That sequence stays within what GSC actually documents without promising a frame-rate result the developer has not published.

Frequently asked questions

Will quest NPCs disappear if I lower the A-Life visualisation range?

GSC’s showcase distinguishes A-Life NPCs from quest or scripted NPCs and describes the increased range mainly in terms of A-Life characters. The setting should therefore not be presented as a blanket visibility control for every NPC type, although the exact presentation can depend on the mission and platform.

Why do I have fewer visualisation presets than another player?

GSC says the number of available presets may vary by PC or console. Different hardware capability and platform builds can therefore expose different choices without indicating that either installation is faulty.

Is Dynamic better than Default on every PC?

No universal winner is established. Default is the developer’s fixed stability recommendation, while Dynamic delegates range decisions to the system; choose based on whether predictable behavior or automatic scaling is more useful for your setup.

Where can I find an official FPS number for each preset?

GSC has not published a per-preset FPS table or percentage improvement. Any number you see should be identified as a measurement from a specific reviewer, computer, location, and patch rather than a guarantee supplied by the developer.
