Use Stage Manager to keep a current app or group of apps in focus while switching among recent work. Use Mission Control to survey open windows and desktop spaces, then jump to a particular window or space. They solve different navigation problems, so neither is a universal replacement for the other.
How Stage Manager and Mission Control differ
Stage Manager keeps the active app or app group in the center of the screen and shows recently used apps at the side. Mission Control spreads open windows into an overview and displays desktop spaces, full-screen apps, and Split View spaces along the top. Apple presents them as complementary ways to navigate windows, not competing modes with one objectively better result. Apple’s overview of Mac window management
| What you need to do | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stay focused on one app or a set of apps for a task | Stage Manager | Keeps the current app or group centered, with recent apps available at the side. |
| Find a particular open window | Mission Control | Shows open windows together so you can select the one you want. |
| Move between desktop spaces or full-screen workspaces | Mission Control | Shows spaces, full-screen apps, and Split View spaces in its Spaces bar. |
| Keep several related app windows together while switching among tasks | Stage Manager | Lets you create groups of apps and return to a group with its windows open together. |
Choose Stage Manager for app groups and focused work
Stage Manager is useful when you want to keep a task’s apps together without leaving every other open window in view. Click an app thumbnail at the side to switch to it. To build a group, drag another app from the side into the center; drag it back to remove it. When you switch to a group containing multiple windows, those windows open together.
You can turn Stage Manager on or off in Control Center or in System Settings > Desktop & Dock. Its settings also let you hide recent apps from the side. For Apple’s steps and controls, see Organize your Mac desktop with Stage Manager.

Choose Mission Control to find windows and manage spaces
Mission Control is the better view when you need to see what is open across your desktop, rather than focus on one current group. Open it with the Mission Control key or Control–Up Arrow. Apple also documents a three-finger upward swipe on a trackpad, a two-finger double-tap on a Magic Mouse, and dragging a window to the top of the screen as ways to enter the overview.
Once Mission Control is open, click a window to return to it, or click a space in the Spaces bar to switch desktops. A trackpad is optional: keyboard access is available, as is the Magic Mouse gesture. On a second display, Mission Control shows only the windows and spaces in use on that display. See Apple’s Mission Control guide for the available controls.

Check this setting if Stage Manager will not turn on
Apple says Stage Manager requires Displays have separate Spaces to be enabled. If Stage Manager is unavailable, open System Settings > Desktop & Dock, scroll to the Mission Control settings, and turn on Displays have separate Spaces. Apple’s Desktop & Dock settings guide describes this option. Menu labels and controls may vary as macOS changes, so consult the guide for your installed version if the path differs.
