For a pre-recorded channel that must reach YouTube Live, use RTMP/RTMPS for the YouTube-facing connection—not SRS WebRTC. SRS documents an FFmpeg-based workflow that turns a video file into a live RTMP stream to SRS, and its RTMP documentation describes publishing to platforms such as YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its ingest. SRS WebRTC is useful for a separate real-time publishing or playback leg, but the cited documentation does not establish it as a direct YouTube ingest option.

What the comparison means in a YouTube workflow

RTMP and WebRTC are not interchangeable choices for every leg of a streaming setup. A pre-recorded channel can involve the source file, an ingest connection to SRS, an optional real-time connection for browser or WebRTC clients, and the final connection into YouTube. Decide which leg each protocol serves before configuring anything.

Question RTMP/RTMPS WebRTC in SRS
Documented role SRS documents RTMP publishing to platforms such as YouTube; YouTube recommends RTMPS for its ingest. SRS documents WebRTC publishing and playback, including RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion. The sources cited here do not establish direct WebRTC ingest by YouTube.
Best fit in this setup The YouTube-facing publishing leg, using the current endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A defined real-time SRS leg, such as browser publishing to SRS or WebRTC playback from SRS.
Setup considerations Correct server URL and stream path/key, secure RTMPS transport, port 443, and encoder settings that meet YouTube’s current guidance. A reachable candidate address and UDP network mapping in SRS’s documented example; non-local browser publishing requires HTTPS.
Decision prompt Is this the stream transport into YouTube? Do you specifically need a real-time publish or playback leg served by SRS?

SRS describes RTMP as the compatibility choice for publishing to a platform. The comparison above is about documented roles, not a latency test: it does not establish an end-to-end latency figure for this architecture.

How to send a pre-recorded video through SRS to YouTube

SRS’s v6 stable ingest documentation describes ingesting files such as FLV and MP4 with FFmpeg or another tool, then publishing them to SRS as RTMP; converting a VOD file to live is an explicit use case. The documentation establishes this pattern, but not a tested command or a production-ready looping schedule. Use the documentation for the exact SRS release and FFmpeg build you deploy rather than assuming an example from another version will work unchanged.

  1. Choose and verify your SRS release. Start with the matching release documentation. The cited ingest page is SRS v6 and marked stable; the cited RTMP page is v7 and marked unstable, while the v5 RTMP page is archived. Examples and behavior may differ by release. See SRS v6 ingest, SRS v7 RTMP, and SRS v5 RTMP.
  2. Configure file ingest. Follow the SRS ingest documentation to use FFmpeg to read the chosen VOD file and publish it as an RTMP stream to your SRS server. Confirm that the file’s audio and video codecs are supported by the actual FFmpeg/SRS path you have installed; the documentation pattern alone does not validate every codec combination.
  3. Set up the YouTube destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the current stream URL and stream key in the publishing path. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when supported. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance calls for a valid server and path and specifies port 443. Keep the key secret: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Consult the YouTube RTMPS guide for endpoint requirements.
  4. Check encoder settings before going live. YouTube’s guidance recommends constant bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and compatible live codecs and audio settings. It lists 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 audio sample rates, with 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that every SRS release or FFmpeg binary supports every combination. Verify the current values in YouTube’s encoder guidance before configuring a stream.
  5. Test the YouTube-facing output. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, confirm that YouTube receives a stable picture and sound, and review Live Control Room for ingest warnings before relying on the setup for a long broadcast. A successful SRS ingest by itself does not prove the YouTube leg is configured correctly.
  6. Add WebRTC only if you have a separate real-time need. For example, use it for an SRS browser publishing or playback leg. Follow the SRS WebRTC documentation for candidate addresses and UDP mapping; browser publishing from a non-local context requires HTTPS. The cited WebRTC guide is for SRS v4, so check the equivalent instructions for your deployed version: SRS WebRTC documentation.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest for some HDR or codec cases that RTMP does not support; HLS sends video in segments and can have higher latency. It is a separate YouTube option, not a reason to treat SRS WebRTC as YouTube ingest. See YouTube’s HLS guide.

When WebRTC belongs in the design

Choose WebRTC when the SRS workflow needs a real-time WebRTC publisher or viewer. SRS documents publishing and playback examples, candidate IP configuration, and UDP port mapping; its guide also notes HTTPS for browser publishing outside a local context. Those are real network and browser requirements, not a substitute for YouTube’s documented RTMPS ingest path.

If your only goal is to deliver a prerecorded feed to YouTube, WebRTC adds a leg you do not need unless another system in your pipeline specifically requires it. You can keep the YouTube boundary RTMPS while using WebRTC elsewhere in an SRS deployment.

Common setup problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a stream: confirm the current YouTube server URL, stream path/key, RTMPS selection, and port requirements. Check that the key was copied into the intended publishing path and has not been revoked or replaced.
  • SRS receives the file but YouTube does not: treat file-to-SRS and SRS-to-YouTube as separate connections. Verify each leg independently; a successful ingest at SRS does not establish that YouTube accepted the outgoing stream.
  • WebRTC works locally but not from a remote browser: check HTTPS for non-local browser publishing, the advertised candidate address, and UDP reachability/mapping in the SRS configuration.
  • Video or audio is rejected or unstable: check codec compatibility and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, especially constant bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio sample rate/bitrate. Recommendations can change, and not all combinations are supported by every installed build.
  • A guide’s configuration does not match your server: confirm its SRS version and stability status. The cited pages cover different releases, so do not copy a configuration across versions without checking the matching documentation.
  • The stream stops when the file ends: the cited SRS documentation describes VOD-to-live ingest, but it does not establish a production looping schedule. Configure and test your own loop/scheduler behavior before depending on continuous operation.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

A working transport does not grant rights to the video or audio. Before scheduling a prerecorded broadcast, confirm that you have permission to use every included work and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies, including rules relevant to reused material. A protocol configuration cannot prevent a rights claim or determine whether a channel meets monetization requirements.
