For a playlist or file that must loop continuously, SRS has the clearer documented fit: FFmpeg can read the source and publish it to SRS over RTMP, and the SRS Docker guide shows an infinite loop for a file. MediaMTX is the more direct choice when a stream is already available on a MediaMTX path and you want to route or forward it to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. These are workflow distinctions in the projects’ documentation, not benchmark results.

Which server fits your playlist-to-YouTube workflow?

Workflow question SRS MediaMTX
Where does the source get read? SRS v6 documents an FFmpeg-based ingest feature for a file or stream, publishing its output to SRS over RTMP. Its ingest configuration supports one input. SRS v6 ingest documentation MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guide starts with an available stream path and configures that path to forward to YouTube. It does not demonstrate reading and looping a playlist as the input step. MediaMTX YouTube forwarding documentation
Is file looping demonstrated? Yes. The SRS v8 Docker guide demonstrates FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option with a single file. SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide The cited YouTube forwarding guide documents forwarding, not playlist looping.
When is it a natural fit? When SRS’s ingest feature is intended to own the source-to-server step, or when you want FFmpeg to read and loop a file before publishing into SRS. When a stream is already available on a MediaMTX path and its routing, protocol conversion, or forwarding features are useful.

The documentation does not establish that either server is universally more reliable, faster, lower-latency, or more scalable. Those outcomes depend on the source, codecs, server configuration, host, network, and YouTube event; test the complete chain you plan to operate.

Loop a file into SRS, then forward it to YouTube

1. Prepare the source and confirm the version

The loop example below comes from the SRS v8 Docker guide, while the cited ingest feature description is for SRS v6. Check the documentation and configuration for the SRS version and build you actually deploy rather than assuming options are identical across versions.

SRS’s example uses one local file, doc/source.flv. A playlist such as an HLS .m3u8 is a different input shape: adapt FFmpeg’s input handling for the actual playlist and media it references, then verify that it reads, loops, and publishes continuously. The example does not establish that every playlist format, codec combination, or discontinuous set of segments will loop cleanly. For FFmpeg input and format details, see the FFmpeg formats documentation.

2. Start SRS and publish a looping file with FFmpeg

The SRS v8 Docker guide gives this example:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i doc/source.flv
  -c copy -f flv rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream

-stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping; -re reads the input at its native rate; -i selects the source; and -c copy passes the input streams through without transcoding. The destination is an RTMP publishing address for SRS. In the guide’s Docker example, host.docker.internal is used to reach the host from the container. For another deployment, use a hostname or address reachable from the machine running FFmpeg, along with the SRS RTMP application and path configured there. The command is a documented single-file example, not a ready-made playlist command.

Stream copy avoids an encode step, but it only works when the source streams are suitable for the path and destination. If the input cannot be copied in a compatible form, configure FFmpeg to transcode it and validate the resulting audio and video before relying on the loop. Transcoding uses additional compute; the cited SRS example does not prescribe output bitrates, resolution, or a universal encoding profile.

3. Check the SRS output before sending it onward

Confirm that FFmpeg remains running, SRS receives the published stream, and the audio and video play as expected across a loop boundary. A command that starts successfully does not prove that playlist references remain reachable or that a segment discontinuity will produce uninterrupted output.

4. Forward the stream to YouTube with MediaMTX, if its routing is useful

MediaMTX documents forwarding an available path to YouTube using an RTMP or RTMPS destination. Configure the path with the current Stream URL and stream key shown in your YouTube live setup; do not treat an endpoint in documentation as a permanent value. The guide warns that YouTube requires both audio and video and may silently reject a video-only stream. Follow the current MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guide for the configuration syntax and endpoint details.

This combined layout adds a server and a forwarding hop. Use it when MediaMTX’s routing or protocol handling is needed; if FFmpeg can publish directly to the destination you require, an additional server may add complexity without helping the job.

When MediaMTX is the better fit

Choose MediaMTX when the stream already exists on a MediaMTX path, or when you need a media server to route streams between protocols and forward a path to YouTube. MediaMTX describes itself as a live media server and proxy with protocol conversion and forwarding capabilities. Its documentation also points to running FFmpeg through runOnAvailable when a destination requires transcoding, filtering, or an unsupported protocol. That is flexible, but it introduces another process to configure and monitor if your only task is looping one file to one YouTube destination. See the MediaMTX introduction.

Do not mix up an HLS source playlist and YouTube HLS ingest

Reading an HLS .m3u8 playlist with FFmpeg is not the same as sending a stream to YouTube through YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol. YouTube’s HLS workflow has the encoder upload media playlists and media segments over HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST. Its documented requirements include muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. The documentation describes segments lasting one to four seconds, accepts Media Playlists, and ignores Master Playlists. It characterizes HLS ingest as suited to premium quality or resolution at relatively higher latency. Consult YouTube’s current HLS ingest guide before implementing that upload protocol.

If your aim is to read an HLS source and forward a live stream, do not assume that accepting or serving a playlist fulfills YouTube’s HLS upload requirements. The MediaMTX forwarding workflow is a separate RTMP/RTMPS option documented for YouTube.

Validate the whole chain and plan for failures

Check source, stream, and destination behavior

  • Source continuity: verify that the playlist and every referenced media segment remain accessible, and test a full loop transition. The SRS example demonstrates a single file; it does not guarantee behavior for every playlist or discontinuity.
  • Audio and video: confirm both are present in the stream reaching YouTube. MediaMTX’s guide warns that YouTube requires both and can silently reject video-only input.
  • Codec compatibility: confirm the copied or transcoded output is accepted by the destination workflow. Do not assume that -c copy converts or repairs a source.
  • Current credentials and endpoint: copy the Stream URL and stream key from the current YouTube live setup, and keep the key private. A stream key or endpoint copied from an old example may not match the current setup.
  • Process and connection recovery: decide how FFmpeg, SRS, and any MediaMTX forwarding process will be restarted and monitored after an exit or network interruption. The cited examples document ingest and forwarding features, not an end-to-end recovery guarantee for your deployment.
  • Version match: the loop example is from SRS v8 documentation and the ingest description is from SRS v6. Confirm the settings against the deployed release.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely place to investigate Next check
YouTube does not show a usable stream Destination URL, stream key, or forwarding path Re-copy the current YouTube Stream URL and key; check the MediaMTX path configuration and its logs.
YouTube rejects or does not play the stream Missing audio or incompatible stream content Verify both audio and video reach the destination, then inspect codecs and the selected forwarding or ingest protocol.
FFmpeg cannot open the input or stops at a playlist boundary Input playlist format, referenced segments, or discontinuities Check the playlist and its media references, confirm FFmpeg can read the actual source, and test a complete loop rather than relying on the single-file example.
The output plays too quickly, too slowly, or fails with stream-copy errors Input pacing or stream compatibility Review -re and the source’s streams; determine whether the destination needs compatible transcoded output instead of -c copy.
The stream stops after an interruption Process supervision or reconnect behavior Check which process exited or lost its connection, inspect its logs, and configure and test restart or reconnect handling for that component.

Cost and operational trade-offs

SRS and MediaMTX are software components in a chain that also needs a continuously available host, the source media, and network connectivity. The cited documentation does not establish a required hosting provider or a total operating cost. A home computer can run the processes, but it must stay powered and connected; a hosted machine moves that always-on requirement off the home setup and brings its own hosting and administration considerations. Transcoding, if required, also changes compute needs. Compare the actual workload and deployment rather than inferring a cost or performance winner from the feature examples.
