If SRS can receive your encoder’s stream but YouTube shows no live signal, the problem is usually on a different connection: the SRS-to-YouTube publishing leg. First identify which hop is failing—encoder to SRS, SRS or its forwarder, or publisher to YouTube—then check the current YouTube stream URL and key, RTMPS/TLS settings, and outbound connectivity. A successful local RTMP publish to SRS alone does not confirm that YouTube publishing is configured or working.
Find the failing hop before changing settings
A relayed stream has at least two separate network legs: an encoder sends media to SRS, and SRS or another publishing client sends it onward to YouTube. Diagnose the legs separately; do not treat a working SRS input as proof that YouTube egress works.
- Check the source-to-SRS leg. Confirm that the encoder is publishing to the intended SRS host and that SRS receives the stream.
- Check SRS itself. Confirm the process is running and inspect its logs for errors around the failure time. SRS’s older v3 wiki illustrates checking process status and following
./objs/srs.log; command paths and configuration syntax may differ by installation and version. - Check the SRS-to-YouTube leg. Find the forwarding configuration or separate client responsible for publishing to YouTube. Verify its destination and credentials, then inspect that component’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room status.
SRS documentation shows local RTMP publishing examples and describes RTMP as a protocol used to publish to platforms, but an example that publishes to SRS is not an automatic YouTube-forward configuration. The exact forwarding setup depends on your SRS version and deployment.
Capture the exact SRS and publisher error, the encoder error, whether SRS receives input, and the status shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Those details help distinguish a missing incoming stream from failed YouTube egress.

Verify YouTube’s current stream URL and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the URL for the specific live stream you intend to publish. YouTube may show an RTMP URL by default; reveal and use the RTMPS URL when appropriate. Copy that stream’s current key into the actual SRS forwarding client or other publisher—not just into the source encoder if a separate component handles YouTube egress.
A URL or key from another event, or an old saved configuration, can prevent YouTube from receiving the intended stream. YouTube’s startup-error guidance recommends getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder will not start.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not include it in screenshots, public logs, or support tickets. If it has been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the publisher that uses it.
Fix RTMPS, TLS, port, and SNI errors
For YouTube RTMPS, check the entire destination—not only the protocol prefix. Google’s RTMPS documentation requires connections to the ingestion server on port 443 and explains that the server hostname is needed during TLS authentication through SNI. The URL must use the valid YouTube ingestion hostname and application path, and the publisher must establish TLS rather than send cleartext RTMP.

- SSL certificate error: Confirm both the protocol and server use
rtmps, then verify the endpoint, application path, and port. YouTube Help suggests trying port 443 if the certificate error persists. - Connection timeout: A client sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint can time out. Check that TLS is enabled and that the client sends the correct hostname through SNI; a correct-looking URL alone does not verify the handshake.
- RTMPS unsupported or misconfigured: Confirm that the specific SRS build or publishing client supports and is configured for RTMPS. YouTube advises using an encoder that supports RTMPS.
Keep the TLS legs distinct. If your encoder connects to an SRS RTMPS listener and SRS separately connects to YouTube, each connection has its own server, hostname, certificate, and port settings. SRS v7 documents RTMPS configuration and certificate/key settings for its own listener; those settings do not replace the requirements for the remote YouTube connection.
Check encoder compatibility and stream health
If the publisher connects but the stream is absent, unstable, or poor in quality, check the media and encoder rather than repeatedly changing the endpoint.

- Update the encoder or publishing client and confirm that its YouTube publishing mode supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that a built-in RTMPS preset may be available.
- Check the encoder’s local preview, reported errors, and CPU load. If possible, review a local recording to see whether the problem is already present before the stream reaches SRS.
- If the local output looks healthy but transmission still fails or degrades, test outbound Internet connectivity from the machine or server actually publishing to YouTube.
- Record the encoder or transcoder name and version when seeking support. SRS documentation identifies FFmpeg and OBS as RTMP publishers, but clients and versions can differ in RTMPS and codec behavior.
YouTube’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not set one universal bandwidth threshold for this particular publisher-side failure. Avoid treating a viewer-side bandwidth example as an upload-speed requirement for SRS-to-YouTube publishing.
Use symptoms to choose the next check
| Observed symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder cannot publish to SRS, or SRS receives no input | Encoder-to-SRS connection or SRS process | Check the encoder destination and error, then confirm SRS is running and inspect its logs. |
| SRS receives input, but YouTube shows no signal | SRS forwarding or the separate YouTube publisher | Inspect the forwarding destination, current event key, publisher logs, and YouTube status. |
| SSL certificate error | RTMPS endpoint, TLS, or port configuration | Verify rtmps, the hostname and application path, TLS, and port 443. |
| Connection timed out | Protocol mismatch, SNI, or outbound network | Check for cleartext RTMP sent to an RTMPS endpoint, confirm SNI, then test outbound connectivity. |
| Connection succeeds, but media quality is poor or encoder reports errors | Encoder or media health | Review the preview, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local recording. |
| Only one viewer reports playback trouble, or several viewers on one network do | Viewer or shared viewer-network issue | Compare reports from viewers on different networks. This check is relevant after YouTube receives the stream, not a diagnosis of failed SRS egress. |
When the stream reaches YouTube but viewers report errors
Separate publisher failure from playback complaints. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes a problem reported by one viewer, reports from multiple viewers sharing one network, and reports from viewers on different networks. A single viewer or shared-network report points toward that viewer’s connection; reports across different networks may indicate the encoder or stream. This comparison is useful only after YouTube is receiving the broadcast.
