The Square Online Store Review 2026 verdict is straightforward: Square is one of the easiest low-cost ways for a U.S. small business to sell online, especially when the business already uses Square POS. Square Free costs $0 per location, but its online card rate is 3.3% + $0.30; Plus and Premium lower that rate to 2.9% + $0.30 while adding monthly per-location fees.

Square Online is Square’s ecommerce and online-ordering service, while current support documentation increasingly uses the name Square Websites. Square’s newer U.S. structure combines online selling with broader Free, Plus, and Premium business plans covering capabilities such as POS, inventory, marketing, loyalty, staff management, bookings, and reporting. That consolidation makes old Square Online reviews—especially reviews quoting older $12, $29, $36, or $72 prices—potentially misleading.

What Square does well

  • Starts without a monthly software subscription.
  • Synchronizes online orders, products, inventory, customers, payments, and Square POS.
  • Supports shipping, pickup, curbside collection, local delivery, QR ordering, and payment links.
  • Works particularly well for retailers, restaurants, cafés, salons, makers, and other local businesses.

Where Square falls short

  • The Free plan’s online processing rate is relatively high.
  • Plus and Premium are billed for every active location.
  • Website customization and complex merchandising are less extensive than on ecommerce-first platforms.
  • Subscriptions, international selling, advanced B2B workflows, and large catalogs require careful testing.

Key takeaways

  • Square Free costs $0 per location, Square Plus costs $49 per active location monthly, and Square Premium costs $149 per active location monthly in the current U.S. comparison.
  • Square Free charges 3.3% + $0.30 for online or invoice payments, while Square Plus and Premium charge 2.9% + $0.30 for those payments.
  • The Free-to-Plus processing difference offsets Plus’s $49 monthly fee at roughly $12,250 in monthly online card volume, before taxes, refunds, add-ons, and other costs.
  • Square combines an online store, catalog, inventory, orders, customer records, payments, and POS, making the platform especially useful for existing Square users.
  • Square Subscriptions supports recurring products but does not support pickup, custom billing dates, minimum commitment periods, product swaps, or changing an existing subscription-plan price.
  • Square is less suitable than Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, or Ecwid when advanced customization, international ecommerce, complex B2B selling, or sophisticated subscriptions is the main requirement.

What changed in Square Online for 2026?

Square Online remains the ecommerce and online-ordering side of Square, but the terminology and plan structure have changed. Current U.S. documentation refers to Square Websites, Square Online, and consolidated Square Free, Square Plus, and Square Premium plans. The consolidated plans combine online selling with other Square business capabilities rather than presenting an online-store subscription in isolation. Square’s current online-store documentation explains the relationship between the website, online ordering, and the broader Square account.

Existing sellers may still see a legacy Square Online subscription in the Dashboard. Square says moving from an older paid subscription to the new plans can cancel the old hosting plan and produce a prorated refund, but migration should not be treated as automatically reversible. Compare the features and rates shown for the account before switching, using Square Dashboard → Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions. Square’s migration guidance provides the relevant qualification.

How much does Square Online cost in 2026?

Square Online’s real cost is the combination of a plan fee, payment processing, fulfillment, marketing, domain, hardware, and optional Square-product charges. In the current U.S. comparison dated August 18, 2026, Square Free has no monthly software fee, while Plus and Premium charge per active location.

Plan Monthly software fee Online or invoice card rate Best fit
Square Free $0 per location 3.3% + $0.30 Testing online sales, small catalogs, and Square POS users who want no subscription fee
Square Plus $49 per active location 2.9% + $0.30 Growing small businesses that need paid-plan tools and lower online processing
Square Premium $149 per active location 2.9% + $0.30 Businesses that can use the wider Square software bundle, premium support, and selected lower rates

According to Square’s current U.S. plan comparison (2026), Plus and Premium include a 30-day free trial. Square also says custom pricing may be available for businesses processing more than $250,000 annually. Rates and features can vary by country, location, account, and legacy status, so the pricing displayed in the seller’s Dashboard is the final check. See Square’s current U.S. plan and pricing comparison.

What payment rates does each Square plan charge?

Square’s standard U.S. rates differ by plan and payment context. The online rate is not the same as the in-person rate, manually entered rate, Afterpay rate, or online API rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Payment type Square Free Square Plus Square Premium
In-person 2.6% + $0.15 2.5% + $0.15 2.4% + $0.15
Online or invoices 3.3% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30
Online API 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30
Manual entry or card on file 3.5% + $0.15
Afterpay 6% + $0.30

According to Square’s fee documentation, ACH payments through an invoice cost 1% with a $1 minimum; Plus and Premium list a $10 cap. Cards issued outside the United States incur an additional 1.5% international transaction fee. Square deducts processing fees from the total transaction amount, including tax and tip. Review Square’s payment-fee details and qualifications.

When does Square Plus break even against Square Free?

Ignoring Plus-only features and every cost other than online card processing, Square Plus’s $49 monthly fee is offset at roughly $12,250 in monthly online card volume. The calculation is:

$49 ÷ (3.3% − 2.9%) = $49 ÷ 0.004 = $12,250

For example, $12,250 of online card sales produces approximately $49 less in percentage-based processing on Plus than on Free. The fixed $0.30 transaction fee is the same in this comparison, so transaction count does not change this simplified result. The calculation excludes refunds, chargebacks, taxes, tips, international cards, Afterpay, other Square sales, and the value of Plus features.

Premium does not reduce the standard online checkout rate below Plus. Premium’s justification must come from the broader Square bundle, the lower 2.4% + $0.15 in-person rate, premium-level operational capabilities, support, text allowance, gift-card treatment, or multi-location needs—not from standard online processing alone.

What costs do Square sellers commonly overlook?

  • Per-location billing: Plus and Premium charge for each active location. Four locations would mean $196 per month for Plus or $596 per month for Premium before processing and add-ons.
  • Taxes and tips: Square’s processing calculation applies to the total transaction amount, including tax and tip.
  • International cards: U.S. sellers pay an additional 1.5% when the card was issued outside the United States.
  • Afterpay: Afterpay costs 6% + $0.30, substantially more than standard online card processing.
  • Gift cards: Gift-card loads list a 2.5% fee on Free and Plus and a 0% load fee on Premium.
  • Marketing texts: Plus includes 500 marketing texts per month per account, then charges 3 cents per text. Premium includes 2,500, then charges 1.5 cents per text. Free does not include text-message marketing in the plan comparison.
  • Domain and fulfillment: A Square subdomain is available, but a custom domain, postage, packaging, returns, and local delivery costs are separate considerations.
  • Hardware and add-ons: Online-only sellers do not need Square hardware, but Square’s pricing page lists hardware starting at $59. Payroll, KDS, Kiosk, and other products can have separate prices or plan conditions.

What features does Square Online include?

Can Square build a complete online store website?

Square provides a section-based website editor with templates, layout controls, product pages, catalog integration, basic SEO controls, blog support, custom-domain connection, a free Square subdomain, cookie-banner support, custom tracking codes, customer reviews, abandoned-cart emails, pop-ups, password-protected pages, URL redirects, social links, and social integrations. Square’s online-support topic page lists the current website and online-selling controls.

The builder is strong for a straightforward store, restaurant menu, ordering page, appointment-related business site, or local-business website. The builder is less compelling for a highly customized brand experience, complex content architecture, advanced product logic, or large-scale merchandising operation. Square’s SEO controls can help a merchant set up a technically usable site, but SEO controls do not guarantee rankings; product photography, copy, navigation, content, structured product information, and site performance still matter.

  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

How well do Square catalog and inventory tools work?

Square’s central advantage is the shared item catalog. A seller can manage products, SKUs, prices, stock, and orders across Square Online and Square POS instead of maintaining two unrelated systems. Available inventory capabilities include low-stock alerts, inventory history, product bundles, unit-cost tracking, purchase orders, vendor management, and barcode-related workflows.

That synchronization is a good fit for a small or moderately complex retailer, maker, café, or shop selling the same products online and in person. Basic synchronization should not be confused with enterprise inventory management. Businesses with multiple warehouses, complex purchasing, advanced product configurations, sophisticated allocation rules, or large wholesale catalogs should test real workflows before migrating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square also lists optional Shopify synchronization through its Thrive Inventory capability. That can be useful when a business needs Shopify’s ecommerce depth while retaining selected Square inventory workflows, but an integration should be tested for timing, variants, stock adjustments, refunds, and order ownership before launch.

Which payment methods and checkout options does Square support?

In the U.S. context, Square supports major credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Pay, Cash App Pay, Afterpay, payment links, virtual terminal, and ACH through invoices. Applicable Square workflows can also include cash, checks, and Square Gift Cards. Square supports Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android for in-person transactions without additional hardware. Square’s plan page lists the current payment and selling capabilities.

Payment-method availability is not universal. Country, account, checkout configuration, product category, and plan can affect which methods a seller can offer. The rates in this review are U.S.-specific and should not be applied to a non-U.S. Square account.

Square also lists offline payments, but offline payment risk belongs to the seller. Square processes an offline payment after the device reconnects, and an offline payment can be declined if reconnection does not occur within 24 hours of the first offline payment. Expired, declined, or disputed offline payments remain the seller’s responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Square handle shipping, pickup, and local delivery?

Square supports shipping, in-store pickup, curbside pickup, local delivery, staff delivery or third-party courier workflows, QR-code ordering, shipping-rate profiles, and bulk shipping-label printing with U.S. shipping discounts through the Dashboard. Square’s setup documentation describes its fulfillment setup sequence.

Square is particularly useful for local businesses that need pickup, QR ordering, or delivery rather than a conventional national shipping store. Shipping rules become harder when products have very different weights, dimensions, packaging requirements, or return conditions. Local delivery also needs carefully configured zones, minimum orders, delivery fees, timing windows, and customer communication.

Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

What marketing and customer tools are available?

Depending on plan and product, Square offers coupons and discounts, scheduled sales, price changes, product drops, flash sales, gift cards, customer accounts, loyalty, a customer directory, email and text marketing, abandoned-cart emails, social selling, Facebook and Instagram integrations, Google Business and Google Ads integrations, customer reviews, reporting, and Square AI listed as a beta feature on the current plan page.

The important qualification is that the consolidated plan page does not mean every marketing feature is included equally in Free, Plus, and Premium. Text allowances, gift-card load fees, support, and other capabilities differ by tier. Sellers should model the cost of campaigns rather than assuming marketing is included because the store itself can be created for free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Square Online support subscriptions?

Square Subscriptions can turn items in the Square catalog into recurring products. Subscription orders can be placed through the online store, tracked in the Dashboard, fulfilled through Order Manager, included in sales reports, configured with item-level tax settings, and promoted with subscribe-and-save discounts. Square also lists subscription sales through QR codes and social media. Square’s subscription documentation describes the feature and its limitations.

Square Subscriptions is not a full replacement for specialized subscription-commerce software. Pickup is unavailable as a subscription fulfillment option. Custom billing dates are unavailable, existing subscription-plan prices cannot be modified after creation, active subscription items cannot be swapped, and sellers cannot require a minimum commitment period. Subscription management is available through the Dashboard and iOS Point of Sale app, but not Android devices.

Those restrictions matter for meal plans, farm boxes, recurring local pickup, subscription clubs, and businesses that need flexible product swaps or customer-specific billing schedules. A simple recurring product may work well; a complex membership or customizable box program may not.

How do you set up a Square Online store?

Square’s official setup sequence starts with the catalog and ends with publishing, which is the sensible order because fulfillment, tax, and checkout decisions affect the customer experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create items: Add products, prices, images, descriptions, variants, SKUs, and inventory in the Square catalog.
  2. Assign fulfillment: Choose shipping, pickup, delivery, QR ordering, or a nonphysical delivery method for each relevant item.
  3. Configure taxes: Set the tax rules required for the store’s selling locations and products.
  4. Design the site: Choose a template, arrange sections, create navigation, and build product and category pages.
  5. Add optional features: Configure blogging, reviews, tracking codes, social connections, and abandoned-cart emails where useful.
  6. Configure checkout: Review payment methods, customer information, order notifications, fulfillment timing, and refund procedures.
  7. Connect a domain: Use a free Square subdomain or connect or purchase a professional custom domain.
  8. Publish and test: Place test orders on a phone and desktop, verify taxes and fulfillment charges, check inventory deductions, and confirm customer notifications before advertising the URL.

The minimum setup is approachable for a first-time seller, but catalog quality and fulfillment configuration determine whether the finished store feels professional. Square supplies the infrastructure; the merchant still needs accurate descriptions, strong images, clear policies, useful navigation, and a workable order process.

Which businesses should use Square Online?

Business type Why Square can fit What to test first
Retail shop Shared catalog, inventory, POS, pickup, shipping, and customer records Variants, stock accuracy, purchase orders, and multi-location pricing
Restaurant or café Menus, QR ordering, pickup, delivery, gift cards, and in-person Square workflows Modifiers, timing windows, delivery zones, taxes, tips, and kitchen operations
Maker or artist Low-cost launch, simple catalog, shipping, discounts, and social selling Product variants, made-to-order lead times, shipping rules, and image presentation
Service business Payments, customer records, bookings-related Square tools, gift cards, and a simple website Whether the needed booking or staff features are included or separately priced
Digital-product seller No physical fulfillment is required, and payment links or a simple online store may be sufficient Digital delivery workflow, customer support, taxes, and the exact product type supported
Subscription business Recurring catalog items, subscription reporting, QR codes, and subscribe-and-save discounts Pickup restrictions, item swaps, billing dates, commitments, and price-change limitations
Multi-location business Central Square ecosystem and location-aware operations Plus or Premium fees per active location and rate differences by location

What are Square Online’s biggest drawbacks?

Is Square Free really free?

Square Free has no monthly software subscription fee, but Square Free is not free of transaction costs. The 3.3% + $0.30 online card rate can be attractive for modest volume and expensive for a high-volume store. Shipping, packaging, refunds, marketing overages, Afterpay, international cards, gift-card loads, domains, hardware, and optional products can also add cost.

  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

Why does per-location pricing matter?

Per-location pricing matters because Plus and Premium are not simply one subscription for a business with multiple storefronts. A restaurant group or retailer with four active locations pays $196 monthly for four Plus locations or $596 monthly for four Premium locations before payment processing and add-ons. Free permits multiple locations without an additional location subscription fee, according to the current comparison.

Where does Square’s website builder feel limited?

Square’s website builder is convenient for a clean, functional local-business store, but it offers less flexibility than ecommerce-first or design-first alternatives for elaborate themes, complex product logic, advanced content structures, and large merchandising systems. Square can provide SEO controls, but no website builder guarantees search visibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Square Online good for international ecommerce?

Square Online is not a universal international-commerce solution. The prices and features reviewed here are for the United States; payment methods, currencies, taxes, domains, availability, and processing rates depend on the account’s country. International cards also carry an additional 1.5% fee in the documented U.S. fee schedule.

How does Square compare with Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, BigCommerce, and Ecwid?

Square is strongest when payments, POS, local fulfillment, and online selling need to share one operating system. The alternatives are stronger in different situations.

Platform Best for Main advantage over Square Main trade-off
Square Online Square POS users and small local sellers Unified POS, catalog, inventory, payments, customers, pickup, and delivery Less ecommerce depth and a higher Free online rate
Shopify Ecommerce-first businesses expecting to scale Broader ecommerce ecosystem, themes, apps, and merchandising depth Can split online and in-person operations for a Square POS user
WooCommerce WordPress users who want ownership and customization Highly customizable and its core platform is free Seller manages hosting, security, updates, plugins, backups, and troubleshooting
Wix Ecommerce Design-led small businesses General-purpose website flexibility and drag-and-drop design Less naturally integrated with Square POS, catalog, payments, and local ordering
BigCommerce Growing catalogs and more complex ecommerce operations More built-in ecommerce depth and scalability for many product-led businesses More complexity than a small local seller may need
Ecwid Businesses adding a store to an existing website Can add commerce without rebuilding the entire site Not as unified as Square’s POS, inventory, and payments ecosystem

For WooCommerce, the core platform being free does not make the complete store cost-free. According to WooCommerce’s pricing information, typical hosting can range from $25 to $350 per month and extensions commonly range from $29 to $299 per year, although actual costs vary widely. See WooCommerce’s current pricing model. Do not use an old headline price for Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, or Ecwid without checking the provider’s current official pricing page at publication time: Shopify pricing, BigCommerce Essentials pricing, Wix plans, and Ecwid pricing.

Which Square Online plan should you choose?

Choose Square Free when you are testing or selling modestly

Choose Square Free when the store is new, online volume is modest, a Square subdomain is acceptable, and the business does not need paid-plan marketing or operational features. The $0 subscription removes the biggest barrier to testing an online store, but calculate the 3.3% + $0.30 online rate against expected sales rather than treating Free as automatically cheapest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Square Plus when the paid tools or processing savings justify $49 per location

Choose Square Plus when the business needs paid-plan capabilities, wants the lower 2.9% + $0.30 online rate, and can use stronger marketing, customer, selling, or operational features. At roughly $12,250 in monthly online card volume, processing savings alone can offset the $49 location fee in the simplified model. Lower volume can still justify Plus when the included tools produce enough value.

Choose Square Premium only for a broader Square operating need

Choose Square Premium only when the business uses enough of the broader Square system to justify $149 per active location monthly. Premium may make sense for meaningful in-person volume, premium support needs, broader sales and staff operations, gift-card activity, marketing-text volume, or multi-location requirements. Premium is not the logical choice for a simple online-only store merely because it is the highest tier: its standard online rate is the same as Plus.

Best Value

  • With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. • A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.

Choose another platform when ecommerce complexity is the priority

Choose Shopify for an ecommerce-first business that expects an extensive app and theme ecosystem. Choose WooCommerce for a WordPress owner willing to manage the technical stack. Choose Wix when visual site flexibility matters more than deep Square integration. Choose BigCommerce for a larger or more complex catalog. Choose Ecwid when adding commerce to an existing site is more important than rebuilding the website.

Final verdict: is Square Online worth it in 2026?

Square Online is worth it for a U.S. small business that values fast setup, low initial commitment, local fulfillment, and a shared online-and-in-person system. Square Free is a sensible way to test demand, but the 3.3% + $0.30 online rate means the seller should compare payment costs with the $49-per-location Plus plan as sales grow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square Plus is the most balanced choice when a seller needs paid features or enough online volume for the lower rate to matter. Square Premium is a specialized operating-system choice, not a default upgrade: the $149-per-location fee needs to be supported by broader Square usage. Businesses pursuing complex international ecommerce, advanced B2B selling, sophisticated subscription rules, or highly customized merchandising should start with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, or Ecwid instead—or test Square against those requirements before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Square Online without paying a monthly subscription?

Square Plus and Square Premium are billed per active location, not simply once per business. Four active locations would cost $196 monthly on Plus or $596 monthly on Premium before payment processing and add-ons.

Does Square Online support recurring subscriptions?

Yes. Square Subscriptions supports recurring catalog items, online subscription orders, tracking, reporting, and subscribe-and-save discounts. Pickup, custom billing dates, minimum commitments, product swaps, and changing an existing subscription-plan price are unavailable or limited.

Do I need Square hardware to sell online?

No. Online-only sellers do not need Square hardware. Hardware becomes relevant when a business also wants in-person transactions; Square’s current pricing page lists hardware starting at $59.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Square Online is a strong low-cost choice for Square POS users and small U.S. businesses with straightforward catalogs, local ordering, or modest ecommerce needs. Start with Free when testing, consider Plus when its features or lower processing rate justify $49 per location, and choose Premium only when the wider Square business bundle pays for its $149-per-location cost.
