In a 2007 profile, Ben Edelman’s investigations of spyware and adware led to a wider concern: online markets can be manipulated when people trust measurements that are easy to distort. The problem, as he framed it, was not only unwanted software or pop-ups, but also weak accountability in the systems that assign value and reward activity online.
What the 2007 profile covered
Matt Hines’s InfoWorld profile, published May 16, 2007, described Edelman’s investigations of adware and spyware vendors and schemes affecting online activity. It reported that he had investigated companies including 180 Solutions and Claria, researched methods used to filter Internet traffic, and was examining schemes to inflate YouTube video popularity. These are details from the article’s 2007 reporting, not statements about those companies or schemes today. Read the InfoWorld profile.
Why distorted metrics were the larger problem
Edelman connected narrow cases of deceptive software and inflated popularity to a broader weakness: users and businesses may treat online measurements as trustworthy even when they can be manipulated. A metric can influence decisions about what is popular, where attention goes, and which transactions deserve payment. If the measurement is unreliable, the market built around it can reward misleading activity.
He described his work as being about “systems of measurement” and people’s faith in metrics that can be distorted. The significance of that argument is its reach: removing a particular piece of software would not, by itself, repair incentives or restore confidence in the measurements that online businesses use.

From investigation to market design
The profile also reported Edelman’s then-plan to teach a Harvard Business School course combining economics and models of market development, including online systems. He said the course would focus on building future financial and transactional systems that were harder to trick. That was a plan reported in 2007, not a current course listing or description of his present teaching.
His proposed lesson was to incorporate accountability and foresight into market design rather than treating manipulation as an afterthought. As he put it, the aim was to help people design market systems “from the start” with more visibility into these risks. The article’s link between spyware investigations and market design is therefore about the incentives and measurement systems that can enable abuse, not an assertion that every market flaw is caused by spyware.

What the profile means today
Edelman’s current biography describes work spanning software, law, economics, online fraud, deceptive advertising software, affiliate fraud, and click fraud. It identifies him as an independent researcher and consultant and notes prior work at Microsoft and Harvard Business School. This is self-published biographical context, distinct from the claims and plans in Hines’s 2007 profile. See Edelman’s biography.
The underlying security issue remains relevant in general terms: the Federal Trade Commission says malware can include spyware that monitors or controls computer use, and recommends steps such as using up-to-date security software. That general advice does not establish that a particular product is effective, nor does it address the separate market-design questions raised by Edelman’s work.
