Spotify’s 3rd price hike in 2.5 years raises the U.S. Premium Individual plan from $9.99 in July 2023 to $12.99 in February 2026, after three increases. The pattern does not prove Spotify will raise prices every year, but it does show that stable, roughly $10 music subscriptions are no longer a safe assumption.
Spotify announced the latest U.S. increase on January 15, 2026. New prices began taking effect in February after subscribers received notice and a one-month grace period. The increase affects Individual, Duo, Family, and Student plans, although the exact impact depends on the plan, billing channel, taxes, promotions, and region.
Key takeaways
- Spotify’s U.S. Premium Individual plan increased from $11.99 to $12.99 in February 2026, marking the company’s third U.S. increase since July 2023.
- The U.S. Individual plan rose from $9.99 in July 2023 to $12.99 in February 2026—an increase of $3 per month, or approximately 30% before taxes based on the published prices.
- Spotify says occasional price updates help it continue delivering audio content, personalization, discovery, and features that can “benefit artists,” but Spotify has not announced an annual price-increase schedule.
- Apple Music and TIDAL also raised U.S. prices in 2026, supporting the view that music-streaming prices are resetting upward across the industry.
- Spotify remains strongest for subscribers who use its discovery, playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, social features, or video; the value is weaker for someone who only wants ad-free music and offline playback.
Why does Spotify’s 3rd price hike in 2.5 years matter?
Spotify’s 3rd price hike in 2.5 years matters because the increase is part of a repeated pattern rather than an isolated dollar adjustment. Spotify raised U.S. Premium prices in July 2023, again in July 2024, and again for billing cycles beginning in February 2026. That pattern makes periodic repricing look increasingly normal for music-streaming services, even though it does not establish a guaranteed annual schedule.
The more defensible conclusion is that the old expectation of a stable, roughly $10-a-month music subscription has weakened. Spotify is using price as an active business lever while expanding into podcasts, audiobooks, video, lossless audio, personalization, and AI-related products. Several competitors are doing something similar, which makes the latest Spotify increase an industry story as well as a household-budget story.

Spotify’s official announcement describes the changes as occasional pricing updates intended to reflect the value of the service and support continued investment in the subscriber experience. Spotify also says those investments can “benefit artists,” but that wording does not mean the full price increase goes directly to artists.

How has Spotify’s U.S. Individual price changed?
The U.S. Premium Individual price increased three times in the relevant period: from $9.99 to $10.99 in July 2023, from $10.99 to $11.99 in July 2024, and from $11.99 to $12.99 in February 2026.
| Period | U.S. Premium Individual price | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Before July 2023 | $9.99 per month | Starting point |
| July 2023 | $10.99 per month | Increased by $1 |
| July 2024 | $11.99 per month | Increased by $1 |
| February 2026 | $12.99 per month | Increased by $1 |
Spotify’s July 2023 announcement confirms that the company adjusted prices for Individual, Duo, Family, and Student plans at that time. The official July 2023 Spotify announcement is the primary source for that first increase.
Using the published Individual prices, the increase from $9.99 in July 2023 to $12.99 in February 2026 is $3 per month. That works out to approximately 30% before taxes. The approximately 30% figure is a calculation from the published prices, not a percentage reported by Spotify.
Which Spotify plans increased in 2026?
The reported U.S. prices after the February 2026 increase are $12.99 for Premium Individual, $18.99 for Premium Duo, $21.99 for Premium Family, and $6.99 for Premium Student. The official Spotify newsroom announcement did not list every U.S. plan price in its copy, so the plan-by-plan figures should be treated as prices reported from subscriber notices or pricing pages rather than as a complete table published in the announcement itself.
| Plan | New U.S. price | Previous price | Monthly increase | Who should compare it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Individual | $12.99 | $11.99 | $1 | One primary listener |
| Premium Duo | $18.99 | $16.99 | $2 | Two eligible household members |
| Premium Family | $21.99 | $19.99 | $2 | Households with multiple listeners |
| Premium Student | $6.99 | $5.99 | $1 | Eligible students who complete verification |
Plan availability, taxes, student eligibility, household rules, promotional pricing, and billing-channel pricing can change the amount shown on an individual account. Spotify’s support guidance on price updates is more reliable than a general headline price when a subscriber is checking a specific renewal.

The 2026 Spotify price increase began taking effect in February 2026, after Spotify announced the change on January 15. Eligible subscribers receive notice by email and a one-month grace period before the new price applies. A subscriber can cancel before the next billing date or change to another available plan.
The exact billing date matters. A subscriber billed directly by Spotify should check the account page for the next payment date. A subscriber billed through Apple, Google, a mobile carrier, or another partner may need to manage cancellation or payment through that billing provider instead of through Spotify’s normal account controls.
Promotional and trial pricing can also conceal the regular renewal price. Check the renewal terms rather than assuming that a temporary introductory price will continue after the promotion ends.

Why is Spotify raising prices?
Spotify’s public explanation is broad: the company points to changing market conditions, continued innovation, audio content, personalization, discovery tools, and the value delivered to subscribers. Spotify does not publicly attribute this specific $1 Individual increase to one single cost, so the following drivers should be understood as business analysis rather than a confirmed itemized explanation.
Revenue per subscriber
A higher price can increase revenue per paying subscriber without requiring Spotify to add an equivalent number of new customers. That matters for a subscription company whose growth, margins, and cash flow are all watched by investors. Price increases can also make existing plans more valuable financially while the company continues to offer a lower-cost free tier.
Licensing and royalty economics
Music streaming depends on licensing agreements and payments to rights holders. Spotify reported that it paid the music industry more than $11 billion in 2025 and nearly $70 billion cumulatively. Those figures come from Spotify’s Q1 2026 earnings release. The figures show the scale of the company’s payments, but they do not prove that royalties alone caused the February 2026 price increase.
Expansion beyond music
Spotify is no longer positioning Premium as only an ad-free music player. The company is investing in podcasts, audiobooks, video podcasts, music videos, lossless audio, social listening, personalization, and AI-related experiences. More formats can make a subscription more valuable to some users, but more formats can also increase content, technology, licensing, and operating costs.
Profitability and cash flow
Spotify’s financial direction also helps explain why pricing is receiving more attention. At its 2026 Investor Day, Spotify reported a 32% gross margin, more than 18 percentage points of operating-margin expansion, and nearly €3 billion in free cash flow for 2025. Spotify published those figures in its 2026 Investor Day recap. The results suggest that pricing is part of a broader effort to build a more durable and profitable business, not merely an emergency response to poor performance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What do Spotify subscribers get for the higher price?
The answer depends on which Spotify features a subscriber actually uses. Recent product expansion includes lossless audio, music videos, messaging and expanded social listening, audiobooks on eligible plans, video podcasts, AI and personalization tools, and SongDNA, which explores songwriters, producers, samples, interpolations, and covers.
Spotify has also discussed AI-powered experiences and possible premium add-ons with investors. The Spotify Investor Day recap presents AI as a potential monetization opportunity, but investor discussion about a possible product is not the same as a confirmed feature, price, or release date for every subscriber.
| Feature or area | Why it may add value | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless audio | Can appeal to listeners with compatible equipment and a preference for higher technical quality. | Availability may depend on market and plan, and Bluetooth equipment may limit the practical benefit. |
| Audiobooks | Combines music and some spoken-word listening in one service. | Access and monthly listening allowances can depend on plan and country. |
| Podcasts and video podcasts | Reduces the need to use a separate podcast app. | Catalogs and video availability vary by title and region. |
| Music videos | Adds visual content without leaving the Spotify ecosystem. | Rollout and title availability may be limited. |
| Discovery and personalization | Useful for listeners who depend on playlists, recommendations, and music discovery. | Value is subjective and difficult to measure universally. |
| AI-related tools | Could create more personalized or premium listening experiences. | Some ideas are limited, in beta, region-dependent, or future concepts rather than guaranteed benefits. |
Not every feature is available to every subscriber, in every country, or on every plan. The higher price is easiest to justify for someone who uses Spotify as a broad audio platform. The price is harder to justify for someone who mainly wants ad-free music, on-demand playback, and offline downloads.
Is Spotify expensive compared with Apple Music and TIDAL?
For a U.S. individual plan, Spotify’s $12.99 monthly price is higher than the $11.99 prices currently listed for Apple Music and TIDAL. Apple Music’s official U.S. page lists Individual at $11.99 per month, while TIDAL’s subscription-types support page lists Individual at $11.99 per month. Prices can vary by location, tax, promotion, and billing channel.
| Service | U.S. individual price in the dossier | Notable strengths | Best comparison caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify Premium Individual | $12.99/month | Discovery, playlists, social listening, podcasts, audiobooks, and video integration. | Compare the features you actually use; not every expansion is included for every user or region. |
| Apple Music Individual | $11.99/month | Lossless audio, Spatial Audio, Apple Music Classical, offline downloads, and broad device compatibility. | Apple One can change the effective price for households already using Apple services. |
| TIDAL Individual | $11.99/month | High-quality-audio positioning and Individual, Family, and Student options. | Prices vary by location, tax, and billing channel; catalog and app preferences still matter. |
| YouTube Premium | Verify current price for your account | Ad-free YouTube plus YouTube Music. | The bundle may be better value for heavy YouTube users than a standalone music comparison. |
A headline comparison can be misleading because music services are not interchangeable. Apple Music includes lossless and Spatial Audio features and works across Apple devices, Android, Windows, smart TVs, Sonos, Alexa, and other platforms, according to its official product page. TIDAL’s support documentation lists a Family plan for up to six members, with the U.S. Family price listed at $19.99 before applicable taxes and subject to location.

Household plans and bundles deserve their own calculation. Divide the total monthly plan price by the number of people who will actually use it, then include services already covered by a bundle. Apple One, YouTube Premium, Amazon Prime, mobile-carrier offers, and other packages can change the effective cost more than a one-dollar difference between standalone music plans.
Are Spotify’s repeated increases evidence of pricing power?
Repeated increases provide evidence that Spotify has some pricing power, but they do not prove that every subscriber accepted the changes or that churn was insignificant. Company-wide subscriber growth combines new customers, existing customers, promotions, trials, different regions, and different plans.
According to Spotify’s Q1 2026 SEC filing, Spotify had 293 million Premium subscribers as of March 31, 2026, compared with 268 million a year earlier. The 25-million increase represents 9% growth as reported by the company. The figure supports the view that Spotify continued growing after earlier pricing actions, but it does not reveal the cancellation rate among U.S. subscribers affected by the latest increase.

Spotify also said at Investor Day that 2025 revenue reached €17 billion, representing an 18% foreign-exchange-neutral revenue compound annual growth rate, alongside nearly €3 billion in free cash flow. Spotify’s Investor Day remarks provide the company’s context for those figures.
The measurements that would provide a clearer answer are U.S. churn, cancellations after the notice period, gross additions, net additions, Family and Duo adoption, regional retention, and the role of trials or promotions. Unless Spotify discloses those figures, subscriber growth should be used as evidence of continued demand—not as proof that subscribers considered the increase acceptable.
Are higher music-streaming prices becoming the new normal?
Higher music-streaming prices are becoming more normal, but an annual Spotify price hike is not established. Spotify raised U.S. prices three times between July 2023 and February 2026, while Apple Music and TIDAL also raised prices in 2026. Several major services repricing in the same period is stronger evidence of an industry shift than Spotify’s three increases alone.
At the same time, “new normal” should remain a qualified interpretation. Three increases over roughly two and a half years do not create a formal annual schedule. Spotify’s own language describes updates as occasional, and prices still vary by country, plan, promotion, bundle, and billing method. The industry may continue to raise prices, introduce cheaper restricted tiers, or create separate paid add-ons for premium audio and AI features—but those outcomes are not guaranteed.

The right response depends less on the one-dollar increase than on which features have become part of a subscriber’s routine.
| If you mainly value… | Most sensible first move | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify playlists, discovery, social listening, podcasts, or audiobooks | Stay on Spotify Premium, at least until comparing actual usage with the new price. | Whether your plan includes the features and audiobook access you use. |
| Apple devices, lossless audio, Spatial Audio, or Apple services | Compare Apple Music and any Apple One bundle you already use. | Standalone versus bundled cost, device compatibility, and family participation. |
| High-fidelity audio above all else | Compare TIDAL with Apple Music. | Supported formats, listening equipment, app experience, catalog, and current local price. |
| Ad-free YouTube as well as music | Price YouTube Premium as a bundle rather than comparing YouTube Music alone. | Your country, billing channel, current offer, and how often you watch YouTube. |
| Only occasional music listening | Try Spotify Free or cancel and use a free/ad-supported alternative. | Whether ads, restricted playback, and the loss of offline listening are acceptable. |
| A large household | Compare Family and Duo cost per participating person. | Same-address rules, permitted members, taxes, and actual household usage. |
Before canceling or switching
- Check the next billing date and the renewal price in the Spotify account page or the account that processes the payment.
- Identify whether Apple, Google, a carrier, or another billing partner controls the subscription.
- List the Spotify features you used during the last month: music, playlists, downloads, podcasts, audiobooks, video, and social tools.
- Calculate the effective cost per person for Duo or Family rather than comparing only individual prices.
- Check the competing service’s current price in your country, including taxes and the end date of any introductory promotion.
- Confirm household eligibility, student verification, audiobook limits, audio-quality support, and device compatibility.
- Export or recreate important playlists carefully. Third-party transfer tools can reduce switching work, but they may request account permissions, misidentify songs, omit tracks, or have privacy and pricing implications.
What happens if you use Spotify Free?
Spotify Free can be a practical replacement if occasional listening is more important than control. Spotify says the free tier preserves access to saved tracks, playlists, and podcasts, but Free does not provide the same ad-free, offline, or on-demand experience as Premium. The Spotify price-update support page describes the available downgrade and free-service options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Spotify raise its price again next year?
Spotify has not announced a guaranteed annual price-increase schedule. Three U.S. increases between July 2023 and February 2026 show that periodic increases are possible, but they do not prove that Spotify will raise prices again in 2027.
Does Spotify’s price increase apply to existing subscribers?
The February 2026 U.S. increase applies to eligible subscribers when their updated billing cycle begins after notice and a one-month grace period. The exact timing depends on the account, plan, promotion, and billing provider.

In the U.S. comparison documented here, Spotify Premium Individual costs $12.99 per month, while Apple Music Individual is listed at $11.99 per month. Bundles such as Apple One, taxes, family plans, promotions, and different features can change the effective value.
Can I switch from Spotify without losing my playlists?
You can move playlists with manual recreation or third-party transfer tools, but no transfer should be assumed to be complete. Check song matching, missing tracks, account permissions, privacy terms, and current pricing before authorizing a migration service.
The Bottom Line
Spotify’s latest increase is more significant than the extra dollar on the bill. Three U.S. price increases since July 2023, alongside 2026 increases from Apple Music and TIDAL, indicate that music-streaming prices are being actively reset upward. The evidence does not establish an annual Spotify hike, but it does justify budgeting for periodic repricing.
Keep Spotify if its discovery, playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, social listening, or expanding audio features are worth $12.99 to you. Compare Apple Music, TIDAL, YouTube Premium, bundles, Spotify Free, and household plans if you mainly want inexpensive ad-free music.
