This is historical coverage, not news of a newly confirmed 2026 attack. Dark Reading published its report on February 6, 2021, describing a campaign involving credentials associated with about 100,000 Spotify accounts. The report said the credentials were believed likely to have come from elsewhere—not from a breach of Spotify’s own security.

What the February 2021 report said

Dark Reading reported that security researcher Bob Diachenko identified a database containing details associated with more than 100,000 Spotify accounts. The credentials were thought likely to have leaked from another source. The report said Spotify reset passwords for affected users and worked with its internet service provider to take down the fraudulent database. It also reported Spotify’s position that the incident was not linked to a breach of Spotify’s security. Read Dark Reading’s February 6, 2021 report.

Dark Reading described this as the second such campaign in a few months and put the previous November campaign at about 300,000 accounts. Both figures come from the reporting; they are not confirmed counts of successful account takeovers or numbers Spotify published directly.

What credential stuffing means—and what it does not prove

Credential stuffing is the use of username-and-password combinations exposed elsewhere to try to access accounts on another service. It can work when people reuse passwords. Finding a database of credentials associated with Spotify accounts does not, by itself, show that those details came from Spotify or that every account was accessed.

What to do if your Spotify account may be compromised

  1. Reset your Spotify password. Choose a strong password you do not use on another service.
  2. Secure linked accounts. Change the password for the email account used with Spotify and, if relevant, the associated Facebook or Apple account.
  3. Sign out everywhere. Use Spotify’s “Sign out everywhere” control. Spotify says this can take up to an hour to take effect.
  4. Review third-party app access. Remove apps you do not recognize or no longer trust. Disconnect an unfamiliar Facebook connection.
  5. Log back in and reconnect selectively. Reconnect only third-party apps you trust.
  6. Contact Spotify Support if locked out. If you still have account access but lost playlists, Spotify says you can recover deleted playlists from your account page.

What the later disclosure does—and does not—say

In its 2025 Form 20-F, filed with the SEC in February 2026, Spotify said the company and some third-party providers have experienced cybersecurity incidents including credential stuffing, scraping, and phishing, and that it expects to continue experiencing attacks. This is general risk disclosure; it does not establish a new incident connected to the February 2021 headline. Spotify Technology S.A. 2025 Form 20-F.
